Need a new tablet? You're in luck, because the selection just got a little wider today, thanks to new offerings from ASUS and Samsung.

ASUS Transformer Pad 300

2012-04-22_16h47_45

If you're in the market for a nice high-spec-low-price 10.1-inch tablet, then the ASUS Transformer Pad 300 is a hard one to beat. It's packing specs pretty close to the Transformer Prime, but thanks to a slightly lower-quality display and plastic body, comes in at around $150 less than the Prime. And since it packs the Transformer name, a keyboard dock will also be available, essentially turning this into an Android laptop.

Specs:

  • 10.1-inch 1280x800 IPS display
  • 1.2Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32GB built-in storage
  • Plastic chassis
  • Android 4.0

Buy:

$399.99 on Amazon

If a 10.1-inch tablet just isn't your thing and you'd rather have something a bit more pocket-able (and affordable), then the new 7-inch Galaxy Tab 2 is an excellent choice.

Info about the Transformer Pad 300's availability has been slowly showing up more and more often over the past few weeks. Now, thanks to Amazon, we have all of the last bits of information that we needed about this powerhouse-in-a-plastic-body device, including price and release date.

As you can see, the TP300 will be available on April 22, along with a whole slew of other Android devices (Galaxy Tab 2 7, Sprint Galaxy Nexus, LG Viper, and LG Optimus Elite). And for $400, this thing packs a punch:

  • 10.1-inch 1280x800 IPS display
  • 1.2Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32GB built-in storage
  • Plastic chassis
  • Android 4.0
Looks like Amazon thinks that the 300 should have 2GB of RAM, but rest assured, that's just a typo.

Update: You can now register to get your free dongle. More info can be found here. Below, you'll find a look at what this massive accessory looks like. Yep, just like the leak.

The ASUS Transformer Prime is the hottest Android tablet on store shelves right now, and for good reason; it's thin, fast, powerful, and well-featured. But there's one shortcoming that ruffled a lot of feathers: very poor GPS performance. The company acknowledged the issue and rolled out numerous OTA updates to the device in hopes that a software patch would fix the issue, but to no avail.

The Transformer Prime is a nice tablet. The GPS problems it suffers due to its all-aluminum case, however, are not. We've heard that ASUS is planning on alleviating these problems with a GPS dongle, and now we're finally getting a look at it. It's uh...well, it sure is a dongle

According to Land of Droid, this giant, we'll say, wand-looking thing, is the GPS dongle that's going to "fix" the Transformer Prime's GPS issues. Of course, from the looks of it, this dongle creates some problems of its own. For starters, subtle it is not. It's a huge, ugly block on the top of an otherwise gorgeous tablet.

We first heard about the all-plastic brother of the ASUS Transformer Prime, the Transformer Pad 300, back at Mobile World Congress at the end of February. While we were given the bulk of the details (including price) at that time, we were, as usual, left without one important detail: a release date.

Thanks to a bit of new information that made its way to Google Shopping last night, it looks like the TF300T could be right around the corner. The device showed up at retailer J&R, but has since been removed from the Shopping list. However, when The Verge contacted the J&R, they were told that the company expects to have both 16GB ($379) and 32GB ($399) models in stock "in about a week."

On a similar note, if you live in France, the tablet is now available for pre-order from Tablette-Store for €499, though the release date is nowhere to be found.

Koushik Dutta, the author of ClockworkMod recovery, has released versions of the touch-enabled CWM Touch recovery over the weekend for both the original ASUS Transformer TF101 and the Transformer Prime TF201. The two devices join an already extensive list of phones with Touch recovery support - in fact, they seem to be the first tablets to support it in CWM's history.

To get the touch-enabled ClockworkMod recovery on your device (currently version 5.8.1.8), make sure you're rooted, load up ROM Manager and click Flash ClockworkMod Touch.

Nexus-tablet

A report from the Wall Street Journal offers new details on Google's expected shift in Android tablet strategy, and it's reportedly much more than a single Nexus tablet. The move is being likened to the Nexus One launch, with Google at the center of the distribution and support system for a line of branded tablets. The Nexus One might have been too much for Google to handle, but the search giant is apparently moving full speed ahead this go around, which includes plans to open its own online store where it will sell the rumored tablet line.

Back at CES 2012, Asus teased a magical $250 Tegra 3 Android tablet, but we haven't heard anything concrete since then.

If you're at all into TV, you've heard of Hulu. Chances are, you're watching something on Hulu right now on your PC, phone, XBOX360, Wii, Roku, PS3, iPad, 3DS, or any of the other supported devices. The list is pretty long, but until today it had one glaring omission - Android tablets. Sure, some tablets, like the Kindle Fire, HTC Flyer, or the Vizio VTAB, were already supported, but they were running Gingerbread and didn't have a proper tablet UI. Well, no more.

Hulu has released an update to the Hulu Plus (app available to Plus subscribers for $7.99 a month) that introduces a brand new tablet-optimized interface and support for the following tablet devices:

  • Asus Eee Pad Transformer
  • Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime
  • Motorola Xoom
  • Motorola XYBoard 10.1
  • Toshiba Thrive
  • Acer Iconia (although it's unclear which Iconia exactly, because the A100 is incompatible - they probably mean the A500)
  • LG G-Slate
  • HTC Flyer
  • Vizio 8" Tablet

It was puzzling to see no mention of any Galaxy Tab variants on that list, most notably the 10.1, and I've confirmed it's indeed listed as incompatible.

Update:  The update should be available to all users now. Surprisingly, it's still running Android 4.0.3, and Face Unlock is still seemingly absent. It's possible that there was a bit of misinterpretation, since the original changelog was translated from Italian to English and ASUS actually stated that it was working on Face Unlock, not that it would actually be available in this update.

One thing it does bring, however, is something that Prime owners have been missing since the beginning: battery information, so you can finally see what has been chomping away at your precious juice. You can also check notifications without unlocking the device now, which is quite handy.
