Eric Schmidt In HBR: "Preparing For The Big Mobile Revolution"

While only tangentially related to Android, a post on the Harvard Business Review by Eric Schmidt (the CEO of Google, in case you weren't aware) provides a glimpse of what he sees coming in the world of mobile technology. His post isn't especially long, and I'm not too keen on plagiarism, so here are Schmidt's three points:

  1. Focus on developing LTE networks
  2. Using mobile phones for commerce (to transfer money)
  3. Smartphone proliferation - put smartphones in the hands of the poor

While short, it's an interesting piece; certainly worth a read.

Android Soon To Be Used By Automotive Chip Tuners As Tuning Device/Carputer

It's not unheard of for tuners to throw a small PC into a car (commonly called a "carputer" in the industry). It's a lot less common for Android to appear in cars, though it does happen - GM has considered using it to power OnStar and has a Volt app, while the Roewe 350 rocks Android in a pretty hardcore way. We've yet to hear of aftermarket tuners taking advantage of Android - until now, that is.

MIUI Digital Clock Widget Hits Android Market - Give Your Handset The MIUI Feel Tonight

The MIUI ROM is definitely one of the most magical things on Android today. A mix between iOS and Android, the ROM is beautiful, fast, and allows for user-created themes.  At times, it doesn't even look like Android. It is a real change; different, but great. In my humble opinion, two of the best parts of the ROM are the beautiful weather widget and digital clock widget. For some time now I have wanted both the digital clock widget and weather widget on my 2.2.1 Nexus One, and now thanks to the development team Factory Widgets, I am now able to use the MIUI digital clock widget outside of the MIUI ROM, and so can you!

In an impressive display of nerdery, XDA member JsChiSurf (who you may remember as the guy behind the re-mapped EVO buttons and a shout-out in Fresh 3.5) has used a host of tools and tricks to create an app that allows him to use his EVO as a garage door opener. Check out the video below (it's on the longer side at nearly 4 minutes, but it's got all the details).

CNN Money: Could Google Become A Carrier?

Yesterday, CNN Money posted a rather interesting piece that posed the question: could Google become "your new phone carrier?" If you're anything like me (and I hope for your sake that you're not), your first response was "Google? A carrier? #$%^ Yeah!" But as awesome as I'm sure that would be, the more I think about it, the less likely it seems.

I'm not saying it won't happen. Hell, even the author of the article (David Goldman) doesn't seem sure of the idea.

[Comic] Plan: Buy Nexus S, Write Awesome Android App.

If you're ever looking for a good webcomic, look no further than Abstruse Goose. Case in point: today's Nexus S comic. There's not much to say about it, so here it is:

Rovio_is_pure_evil

Bonus lols: the image name is "Rovio_is_pure_evil.PNG."

Probably safe to say we've all been in a similar situation - which is pretty good for Rovio.

Chitika Says Android Won't Pass iPhone's US Market Share Until February Of 2012... We Disagree

Our pal Dan Ruby over at Chitika just shot us a note to let us know that he's run the numbers and come up with a prediction for when Android will take over the #1 position in market share in the US, based on ad impressions on Chitika's network. The result: February 16, 2012... at 12:23 PM EST.

He's put a fair amount of time into crunching these numbers - last we'd talked to him (two weeks ago), he was already working on it.
