If there's one thing Android lovers can unite around, it's that we have the best community around. When CyanogenMod put out the call back in February asking for donations to get some new servers, the community responded enthusiastically. Now, the most popular third-party ROM developer is announcing that the servers are online and capable of building CM9 in nine minutes. Whoa.

cmserver

This is where the magic happens.

The team says there's still some work to be done before these babies are cranking, but once they've set up schedulers to automate the builds, the new servers will be able to put together bleeding edge ROMs for your device faster than you can say "Holy crap, that was really friggin' fast."

For those who are curious (and aren't we all?) those are three Dell R610s in the photo of the CM servers above.

Remember Acer's quad-core tablet that managed to beat out ASUS' Transformer Prime by a pretty wide price difference? It's available from Amazon for an easier-on-the-wallet $450 right now. If you're holding out for the silver version, you can still place a pre-order with Amazon here. In case you need a refresher, here are the specs:

  • 10.1-inch 1,280x800 display
  • Quad-Core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32GB built-in storage with microSD Card slot
  • 5MP Rear shooter, 1MP front-facing camera
  • 9,800mAh battery for 12 hours of continuous video playback
  • Android 4.0 with Acer Ring

The Olympics-branded tablet is an attractive choice for those who are looking for a budget tablet that doesn't strip away features that the bigger players share.

Acer ics 2

You're probably getting used to OEMs being conveniently vague about dates of Ice Cream Sandwich rollouts. Well, Acer has seen fit to set the record straight and clue everyone into the update schedule for the Iconia Tab A100 and A500 Android tablets. Both devices will begin getting the update on April 27, which is a mere 10 days from now. The A200 got its update way back in February.

Update: Mexico and Brazil updates clarified:

The aforementioned April date is only for the US variant of the devices, though. Latin America is actually getting its updates under way a few days earlier, but sadly, Iconia A100 owners in Canada will have to wait until May 3.

So, here's a bit of good news for Time Warner customers: the company just updated its Android app with support for streaming TV on Android 4.0 devices. Fantastic right? Yeah... no. There's a catch: it won't work for rooted users. Boo, Time Warner!

1 2 3

Of course, TW isn't the first company to shun rooted users when it comes to streaming media: Google itself did the same thing with Play Movies back when it first launched the service (long before it was called "Play Movies"). I'm sure that both companies were left without choice, otherwise the media providers would have probably just walked away from the deal.

Info about the Transformer Pad 300's availability has been slowly showing up more and more often over the past few weeks. Now, thanks to Amazon, we have all of the last bits of information that we needed about this powerhouse-in-a-plastic-body device, including price and release date.

2012-04-17 14h13_07

As you can see, the TP300 will be available on April 22, along with a whole slew of other Android devices (Galaxy Tab 2 7, Sprint Galaxy Nexus, LG Viper, and LG Optimus Elite). And for $400, this thing packs a punch:

  • 10.1-inch 1280x800 IPS display
  • 1.2Ghz quad-core Tegra 3 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 32GB built-in storage
  • Plastic chassis
  • Android 4.0
Looks like Amazon thinks that the 300 should have 2GB of RAM, but rest assured, that's just a typo.

It's been a while since VZW showed any love to Thunderbolt owners, but that doesn't mean that it has forgotten about them completely. In fact, we just received a leak of a new build that brings some fixes and enhancements to Big Red's first LTE device.

If your device is running Android 4.0, you'll be glad to know that Chrome for Android beta received an update in the Play Store just a bit ago that brings a few new features, one of which many users have been waiting for: user agent switching. This means that no longer are you stuck on the mobile site, as you now have the option of choosing how to load sites. Yay!

Also included in this version is:

  • Allow for download of files to the device
  • Complex Text Layout (CTL) and Right to Left (RTL) text support in rendered pages
  • Enable old-style YouTube embed content to be played via native YouTube app
  • Support for country-specific suggested search engines.

Do you remember the small anticlimactic device dubbed the LG Optimus Elite that we told you about a few weeks ago? Well, Sprint and LG just made this little guy official. Here's a look at the official spec sheet:

  • 3.5-inch display
  • 800Mhz processor
  • 5MP rear shooter
  • NFC
  • Android 2.3

320144_4 320145_4

This thing may have been "Elite" two years ago.

With specs like that, you probably expect this device to be free, eh? Bad news - it's not. In fact, it's $80. Granted, you get $50 of that back by way of mail-in-rebate (making the device $30), you still have to fork over $80 (plus tax) if you want to pick this phone up.

When you want to totally reinvent yourself, a new look is definitely a good place to start. If you really want to say "hey, this is a new me!" then a name change can convey that message pretty well. I guess Read It Later wasn't happy with where it was in the hard knock life of an app in the Google Play Store, because it recently went under the knife to get a totally new interface, new features, as well as a new name.

What emerged this morning is the all new Read It Later, now called Pocket. Pocket offers everything that you've come to expect from Read It Later, along with new content filters, improved organization features, faster sync, and, of course, an all new interface.
