BLU Energy XL review: Huge screen, epic battery life, and a reasonable price

BLU released a new phone a few days back called the BLU Energy XL and they sent me one to take a look at. The XL in the title is there for good reason; everything about this phone is massive. It has a huge 6" HD screen, 64GB of on-board storage, and mammoth 5,020 mAh battery. The only thing that isn't enormous about this behemoth is the price, which is a very reasonable $300.

Sound pretty good on paper, right? Let's see how good it is in practice.

ASUS says there's a Snapdragon 821 variant of the ZenFone 3 Deluxe on the way

Asus already has three different versions of the ZenFone 3 planned in fast food-style denominations: vanilla, Deluxe, and Ultra. The Deluxe is the highest-specced version ("Ultra" is about a bigger screen, not better specs), as it's equipped with the latest and greatest Snapdragon 820 processor. Of course that's no longer the latest and greatest: Qualcomm announced the even faster Snapdragon 821 just yesterday. Not to be outdone, a new version of the ZF3 Deluxe has been announced via a Taiwanese press release.

[Deal Alert] Get a ZeroLemon SolarJuice 10,000mAh portable battery pack for only $9.99 with coupon code ($25 off)

ZeroLemon's SolarJuice batteries offer the promise of recharging away from an outlet. Leave the pack out in the sun and watch light turn into energy that powers your phone. In reality, you have to leave it out for a day or so to get any juice that way, and you will probably still end up sticking it in the wall.

No matter. It remains a great pack. And now it's one you can get for a mere fraction of its usual price.

[Review + Deal Alert] Aukey's 10 port USB charging station with dual QC 3.0 ports is perfect for five normal people or one Android Police reader

I've spent time with a lot of chargers since I began reviewing them a few months ago. I've seen one port, two port, five port, and even six port chargers. The charger I'm taking a look at today blows them all away, well at least in terms of the number of ports it has. This is one of Aukey's latest USB chargers, and it rocks a crazy 10 charging ports!

Eight of the ten ports are standard 2.4A adaptive ports, the other two, denoted by an orange-colored plug, are QC 3.0 ports, meaning they will give a speedy charge to any Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 compatible devices (a cool guy I know made a list of phones that support QC 3.0, you can check it out here).

Android platform distribution numbers updated for July with the biggest gains yet for Marshmallow

Google has updated the platform distribution numbers for July, which is a little later than usual. Was the wait worth it? Has Marshmallow rocketed to the top of the charts? Well no, but it did have a healthy gain of more than 3%—that's the best yet. Meanwhile, Froyo is still alive. Someone, somewhere is using Android 2.2, and that makes me sad.

Zoho's Notebook is a free note taking application aiming to replace Evernote

Zoho isn't shy about its new app's target. Right there, at the bottom of Notebook's official product page, is a clear message saying, "Looking for an alternative to Evernote?" There's even a whole page dedicated to comparing side-by-side shots of Notebook and Evernote and telling everyone that although Notebook doesn't have everything now, it's on the right track.

So what exactly does Notebook have? Notebooks, ha! Obvious joke aside, you can create text notes, images, audio notes, and checklists. Then change their main color, group them into notebooks with assigned cover images, reorder them, move them to another notebook, search them, and share them over email or SMS.

Project Fi ups international data to 3G speeds, offers $150 off Nexus 6P for new signups

Google announced today on the official Android blog that Project Fi's international data roaming speeds will be up to 10-20x faster than before. "Before" was previously advertised as around 256kbps, so this brings speeds up to or around 2560-5120kbps (2.5-5Mbps, basically), which is pretty much in line with what you can expect on 3G in most countries. This should take Fi's international data from "usable in a pinch" to "usable."

The same pricing applies as always: you pay for the data you use abroad at the same rate you'd pay for that data in the US. The new data speeds come courtesy of the addition of Three to the Fi network.
