Google starts selling more Nest products on the Google Store in Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, and Spain

Last month, Nest announced that it would be starting to sell its products in Austria, Germany, Italy, and Spain. But at the time, the retail outlets where these products could be bought ranged from Amazon to Media Markt, ePrice, El Corte Ingles, and a couple more. They were all third-party retailers and not official Nest or Google entities.

If you prefer to get your gear straight from the source, the official Google Store has started to sell some of Nest's line-up in these countries and is also expanding availability in Belgium for the Cam Outdoor. In short, here's the list of new countries where you can buy different Nest products:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat, 3rd generation: Italy, Spain (still not available in Austria or Germany)
  • Nest Protect, 2nd generation: Austria, Germany (still not available in Italy or Spain)
  • Nest Cam Indoor: Austria, Germany, Italy, Spain
  • Nest Cam Outdoor: Austria, Belgium, Italy, Spain (was already available in Germany).

YouTube v12.05 adds adjustable seek times for double tap to seek [APK Download]

Only four days ago, YouTube officially declared that the double-tap to seek gesture had become a part of the app, giving users the capability to quickly jump 10 seconds forward or backward in the timeline. Now the development team is topping their delivery with a little bit of user-configurability. The interval of the skip was originally locked to a strict 10 seconds, but you can now set your own from a handful of other durations. You'll need the latest update to the YouTube app, which began rolling out earlier this afternoon.

Google Store stops selling the Nixon The Mission smartwatch and the Philips Hue Color A19 Starter Kit

Google is constantly adding and removing products to and from the Google Store. With the speed that tech moves along at and the amount of products that the store carries, having to dump older or slower-selling products is inevitable. Earlier today, the LG Watch Style and Sport went up for sale (the Sport is already out of stock, by the way); now, the Nixon The Mission smartwatch and Philips Hue Color A19 Starter Kit, which made their Google Store debuts around four months ago, have been axed.

[Update: May enable Google Assistant on non-Pixels] Google App v6.13 "alpha" appears with support for Payments on Google Assistant, and prepares enhanced Offline Search, Lite Mode, Recent page, and much more [APK Teardown + Download]

Some users signed up to the Google app beta channel have been receiving an unusual "alpha" release of v6.13 update. It's not entirely clear if this was meant to find its way into the wild, and judging by many inoperable and buggy issues, I suspect it wasn't. All the same, it's out and contains some pretty interesting things. To begin with, this version enables some features that had previously been seen in testing like a page of recent search topics and lite mode. There is also a process to add payment information for use with Google Assistant. Diving into a teardown brings back some previously seen features and adds a couple of new ones to the list.

Play Store letting some app developers temporarily make their paid apps free

In all the years the Android Market and, later, the Google Play Store have existed, developers have never had the option to take a paid application and temporarily make it free of charge. Today, it appears Google is considering changing that, if a sale on the app Blaze and the Monster Machines is any indicator. Take a look - this app which is normally $3.99 on the Play Store has been temporarily reduced to the price of... no money.

What is 5G? The layman's guide

5G. You're aware of it, probably. You've at least likely whizzed past it unblinkingly in a press release or heard and ignored it in a sound byte from a CEO or analyst, as 5G is increasingly a very hot topic in the biz.

But wait, aren't we just kind of now starting to get 4G everywhere? Isn't it too early to be talking about the next generation of wireless technology? Actually: yes. It kind of is. And that's part of what this piece is about - providing a bit of a reality check on 5G, what it is, what it means for you (or doesn't), and when you can expect it.
