[Bug Watch] Many Nexus Devices Still Suffer From Assorted Bluetooth Issues

The Bluetooth experience on Android has always been a rocky road. For the first few years Android relied on BlueZ, a "protocol stack" originally developed by Qualcomm for the Linux operating system. Despite many limitations and missing features, BlueZ served admirably until Android 4.2 launched with a new stack dubbed Bluedroid, a project built jointly by Google and Broadcom. Like any young project, the bugs were plentiful, but most of the critical issues were solved in the first few weeks. Unfortunately, several problems remain and a few have seemingly reappeared with KitKat.

The introduction of Bluedroid was intended to ease many of the challenges associated with adding new features on top of the existing BlueZ architecture.

Android Police Holiday 2013 Gift Guide: This Is The Shit You Want

With Christmas right around the corner, it's the time of year when many people are scrambling around trying to find the "perfect" gift for their loved ones. Picking the right thing for "the person who has everything" can be quite the task – that's why we decided to offer up our favorite products for the year in a massive this-is-the-stuff-we-use-and-love-and-think-you-or-your-loved-ones-will-too (abbreviated as TitSWUaLaTYoYLOWT for short) list.

Each person from the AP team picked out a handful of stuff (or more, possibly several handfuls), that they either can't live without or feel like would make the perfect gift this holiday season. Many things on this list got multiple votes, but to avoid duplicate entries we made sure everyone had something unique to add.

[Bug Watch] Global Search On Android 4.4 KitKat Doesn't Pull Results From Most Searchable Apps

One of the most powerful, albeit underused, features of Android is the ability to get search results directly from within the apps installed on our devices. While there has been a bit of conflict over the so-called Unified Search patent, the fact is, that functionality is alive and well. Ok, it's actually not doing all that great on Android 4.4 - which is to say, it's only working with a few of the many apps that should be searchable.

If you're new to Android or only ever used an OEM skinned phone, you might not be familiar with what the Android calls Global Search.

[Bug Watch] Nexus 4 And Nexus 5 Suffer From Extremely Low Sound Levels On Headset Mics, Fix Coming Soon

We all use our smartphones differently. Some people rely on them for web browsing and apps, some for texting, and many of us still resort to making calls, you know, when we have to. Even within those categories, several patterns emerge and certain habits and practices have been developed. Many of us have long since abandoned using wired headsets for calling, but a lot of people still prefer them to keeping Bluetooth headsets charged or holding a 5-inch phone against an ear. Unfortunately, these simple wired accessories can also be plagued by bugs like anything else, and both the Nexus 4 and 5 seem to suffer from a pretty big one.

Stock Android Isn't Perfect: 4.4 KitKat Edition

Besides a bevy of new features, Android's update to 4.4 brought forth a ton of tweaks to the interface through GEL launcher and a fresh round of updated stock apps. There's little doubt Android's user experience and overall design paradigms are continuing to evolve, becoming more refined, usable, and useful. We covered most of the changes to the interface in Getting to Know Android but, as with any major update, new changes come with new opportunities for error.

There are plenty of incongruences, inconsistencies, and lingering design problems in Android 4.4, and just like previous entries in the Stock Android Isn't Perfect series, we'll be running through those of note.
