Update Wednesday has begun! We're starting off with a pretty small bump for Google Play Games, taking it from v2.1 to v2.2. There aren't any big new features, but a few things have been polished up.

What's New

Like so many other Google apps, the first-run experience has been updated with a short introduction to explain what the app does and the value users can expect to get from it. Of course, this generally won't show up if Games has been in active use already.

The Team Win Recovery Project is a great custom recovery, but it isn't pretty. Back in the Ice Cream Sandwich days, it kind of blended in. Nowadays, it's just that outdated screen you largely don't care about while you flash .zips.

But what if TWRP could look just as sleek as the rest of Android 5.0? Thanks to the work of XDA developer z31s1g, it can get close. He has released a Materialized TWRP theme that changes the appearance of every screen, including when you're wiping partitions or running scripts.

It's not Google's job to account for all the quirks of custom ROMs, but there's been one pervasive bug that has driven some users up a wall in recent weeks. Chrome would render in a bizarre little floating window on ROMs like Paranoid Android. The latest Chrome Beta release fixes that, and you can grab it below.

While we weren't able to find anything else particularly interesting (note: Music Key is not linked to this update, previous versions had it, too), YouTube 5.18 does include some interesting strings referring to upload trimming. Specifically, these strings:

  <string name="android_youtube_upload_lib_name">AndroidYouTubeUploadLib</string>

<string name="video_trim_view_trim_time_regular">%1$02d:%2$02d</string>

<string name="video_trim_view_trim_time_zoomed">%1$02d:%2$02d.%3$03d</string>

<string name="upload_edit_video_tutorial_title">Trim your video</string>

<string name="upload_edit_video_tutorial_description">Drag the handles to trim.</string>

<string name="upload_edit_video_tutorial_zoom_description">Touch and hold to get a closer view.</string>

<string name="upload_edit_video_tutorial_got_it">Got it</string>

It looks like a new upload interface is on the way for YouTube's Android app, and it's probably about time - the current UI is pretty dated.

Over the last few weeks, we've heard of a feature popping up for Google Play Music All Access users here and there (thanks for the tips!), whereby the app or web interface would link users to relevant music videos inside the app. When listening to or browsing music, the app would show a YouTube icon, sometimes in the center of the screen, sometimes weirdly positioned in the "now playing" bar. It was clear Google was still testing the feature but it looks like now, with the publication of an official change log for Play Music's latest update, Google may be flipping the switch on a wider basis.

Since Google Maps got its update to version 9.1 yesterday, we've been taking a closer look to figure out exactly what's new, and - of course - taking a quick look inside as well.

So far, it doesn't seem like a huge update, but there's at least one big change worth highlighting. In 9.1, Maps will provide helpful information about your destination or a location you look up. The app will give you the current weather and time at the given location, and will provide some fun facts too.

Most of us don't want to think of Android without Google Play services. There's a good reason for that, without all of the tools Google offers, we would miss out on features like push notifications, integrated maps, and even newer things like Google Fit. Developers keep asking for more and Google is answering that call. With the latest release of Google Play services, new features are coming to Fit, Maps, Drive, And Wallet.

Anybody who owns an ADT-1 has noticed the inexplicable absence of a Play Music app, something that became even more apparent after the Nexus Player began shipping with it. Well, the wait is finally over! An update to the Play Music app began rolling out earlier today, and it includes a banner on the Leanback Launcher for those of us with Google's development hardware. If you've got a Nexus Player, you haven't been left out with this update.

After seeing the update to Chrome's beta channel recently, it was inevitable the same build, slightly improved, would reach the stable version. So here we are, Chrome for Android v39. It's not a huge update, but not like you're going to skip it or anything.

There's not much that's new in News & Weather 2.1. This update is all about making the interface and animations consistent with other recently-Materialized apps. We've seen exactly three new things: one, the statusbar changes color to match the action bar on Lollipop, like an increasing number of Google apps. Two, the pull-to-refresh action uses the newfangled circular refresh animation instead of a horizontal bar. And three, the hamburger menu now animates into an arrow when the slide-out menu is activated.
