Fire OS 5 Comes To The Original Amazon Fire TV And Fire TV Stick (Both 1st And 2nd Gen Now Run Version 5.0.5)

Fire OS 5 is the latest release of Amazon's customized version of Android. As is tradition for the company's products, this firmware upgrade bumps devices up to being only one major version out of date. Instead of Marshmallow, Amazon's Fire gadgets are making their way up to Android 5.1.

Amazon has started pushing out Fire OS 5 to the 1st generation Fire TV and Fire TV stick. The 2nd gen hardware, which was already running 5.0.4, is also getting a boost. After the latest round of updates, all four gadgets should be left at 5.0.5.

[Update: Xperia Z3v Too] Verizon's Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 Gets An Over-The-Air Bump From Android 5.0.2 To 5.1.1

At this point, anyone who really cares about getting speedy Android updates knows to avoid using Verizon if possible, with a few exceptions for flagship devices. Those exceptions don't extend to tablets, even high-end ones. Case in point: the Verizon Sony Xperia Tablet Z2 is now getting its Android 5.1.1 update... a year after the software was released, and more than four months after the release of the latest version, Android 6.0. Such is life.

ZTE Is Rolling Out Marshmallow To The Axon Pro

ZTE spent the last few years building low-cost devices for carriers, but 2015 saw the release of the Axon Pro. This phone had flagship specs and a pretty nice build of almost-stock Android. ZTE promised it would keep this phone up to date, and it's following through with a Marshmallow OTA. It took a little longer than expected, but you can grab the update now.

NVIDIA's SHIELD Android TV Marshmallow Update Is Rolling Out Now

The SHIELD TV is the clear winner among Android TV devices, even if that is a very short field. The high-powered set-top-box gives a better experience than both the Nexus Player and the Razer Forge TV... which remain the only other stand-alone Android TV devices available. Today the SHIELD gets even better, because NVIDIA is pushing out the Marshmallow update to its hardware. NVIDIA updates usually go out all at once, so if you own a SHIELD, you should be able to start the download right now.

The biggest addition for the SHIELD is adoptable storage, which lets users reformat a MicroSD card into semi-permanent primary storage that can be used to download apps and other files directly to the device.

Two Weeks Later, NVIDIA Resumes The Android 6.0 Upgrade For The SHIELD Tablet, This Time With Working Wi-Fi

NVIDIA tends to be very diligent when it comes to upgrading its first-party Android hardware. Earlier this month the company sent out an over-the-air update for the SHIELD Tablet, bumping the mostly-stock software up to Android 6.0 Marshmallow. A day later it halted the update, because early users were reporting that the new software made the tablet's Wi-Fi inoperable... which is kind of a big deal, especially when most of your tablets are Wi-Fi only. Today the problem has apparently been fixed, and the update is being resumed.

The news was posted on NVIDIA's official forum, which remains quite active.

Verizon's HTC One M9 Will Get The Marshmallow Update February 16th

HTC tried (and failed) to get all its Lollipop updates taken care of in 90 days last year, but this time they were not so ambitious as to make any promises. They aren't doing bad, though. After earlier getting approval from T-Mobile to push Android 6.0 to the M9, now Verizon is also scheduled for February 16th.
