CyanogenMod 6 Continues Its Rampage, Launches Nightlies For HTC Aria and CDMA HTC Hero

CyanogenMod 6 is continuing its rampage: last night the first Nightly build of CM6 was released for the HTC Aria (a.k.a. the Liberty) and CDMA HTC Hero. This should make the users of these phones quite happy - CM is the single most popular Android ROM, and for good reason.

HTC Droid Eris On-Phone One Click Root Available

Yesterday we brought news of an on-phone one click root for the Samsung Galaxy S line of phones - which itself was based off of a similar root for the HTC Droid Eris (as mentioned in the post). Turns out we didn’t mention the Eris root the first time around - so here it is.

Android user/coder jcase has come up with an App to root any Eclair-running Droid Eris’. The process is nearly as simple as it gets:

Step 1) download and install this apk

Step 2) Run, read disclaimer, press button

Step 3) Reboot, once rebooted your phone should have Amon's recovery.

Early EVO 4G Froyo OTA Adopters, Rejoice. An Update From 3.26.651.3 (Friday Leak) To 3.26.651.6 (Monday Final) Now Available

The wizards at xda-developers have woven their magic once again and solved the woes of those EVO 4G owners who upgraded their handsets to HTC's leaked 3.26.651.3 version of Froyo last Friday.

Problem

If you remember, shortly after the .3 leak was posted, HTC announced that it wasn't the final Froyo release. Indeed, a few days later, on Monday, the world saw a new, this time official, OTA with the version number ending in .6. The problem was, however, that there was no way to update from .3 to .6, which left the early adopters empty handed.

Solution

Pojoman, one of xda's members, managed to acquire the necessary upgrade file from Sprint (props to his connections there) and made it, along with installation instructions, available to all the EVO pioneers.

[Updated: Watch Out!] On-Phone One Click Root Available For Samsung Galaxy S

Enterprising user rhcp0112345 over at XDA-Devs (where else?) has come up with an on-phone, one click root/unroot for the Samsung Galaxy S line of devices. It has only been tested on his Vibrant, but it should work across the line of devices.

There are no real details on the process yet - but it seems that you just install the app, hit “root” or “unroot,” and reboot your device. Sounds simple enough.

DamageControl 3.5 Released For HTC EVO 4G, Packing Froyo And The Usual DC Goodies

Damageless and TrevE have been hard at work for the past few weeks porting Froyo to the EVO. On July 24th, they released the first DC 3.5 (Froyo) beta. Today (in the wee hours of the morning) they released their final build - and users seem to be loving it. The guys have also set up a Google Code page for DC, which provides a wiki and bug database, in addition to the usual news/latest version page.

SurfaceFlinger Hack Brings Screen Calibration To Nexus Ones Running CyanogenMod 6

Remember Jeff Sharkey’s screen tool that allowed you to turn off the sub-pixels of specific colours on the Nexus One’s PenTile display, in order to save battery?

XDA-Developers member storm99999 has just published a hack allowing you to apply a different colour calibration profile to your N1’s screen using the very same function. However, rather than switching sub-pixels off completely, this hack changes the voltages and thus the colour balance to suit a particular colour temperature. In its current implementation, the mod changes the screen temperature from 9000K to 6500K, a slightly warmer hue.

Originally available as a flashable ZIP for ROMs supporting the original SurfaceFlinger hack, storm99999’s colour calibration profile is now included in the latest CyanogenMod 6 Nightly.

Samsung Captivate/Vibrant Now Rootable With One Click™

Android dev TGA_Gunnman has been added to Amazon’s hit list for this latest in a litany of single-click phone unlocking methods. In spite of the impending lawsuit (not really), his Samsung Galaxy S One-Click Root program does exactly what it says on the, err, titlebar.

There are separate versions for the Captivate and Vibrant, so make sure you get the right one. All users have to do is download the program - currently Windows only - run it, and click the One Click Root button with their Captivate/Vibrant connected up to USB. Now all you have left is to sit back and wait for the custom ROMs to start rolling in (since there aren’t any yet).

Motorola DROID X Gets Single-Click Root — On PC Or On Phone, It’s Your Choice

A common complaint leveled against Android is that it’s too technical or too difficult to use. This is especially the case when it comes to hacking around on your phone. While the command line may be the interface of choice for some Android users, it’s not exactly the most user friendly of solutions. Enter one-click rooting, something that iPhone jailbreakers should already be familiar with. One click. Can’t get easier than that, right? All it takes is downloading a simple Windows application, a click of a button, and BOOM (to use an Apple phrase) you’re all SuperUser-y.

For those of you who consider use of a computer beneath you, there is still a solution.

Another Point For The Dev Community: Official HTC EVO 4G Froyo Build Rooted

This is exactly why I love Android so much and the awesome developer community around it. Case in point: the official Android 2.2 update for the EVO 4G has already been rooted by netarchy over at XDA-Devs. Yea – the update that was just released yesterday… pretty impressive stuff. Be forewarned, though – the update may not play nice with the previous (non-final) update that was released.

You might be able to just flash this over the leaked ota, but I advise doing a full wipe before flashing just to be safe.

[Tutorial] How To Wirelessly Transfer Files To/From Your Android Phone And Your Windows PC

This tutorial will show you how to access your phone’s storage for transfers to and fro over your local WiFi network. We will install FTP (File Transfer Protocol) server software on the phone then mount it as a network drive on a Windows PC. Your phone and PC must be connected to the same network.

1. Install SwiFTP

SwiFTP can be downloaded freely from the market. It is a small application which allows your phone to act as an FTP server. It can also allow you to access your phone from a remote network via a proxy, but that will not be covered in this tutorial.
