It's no secret that Verizon loves Android, so it shouldn't be a surprise that it's featured heavily in a leaked roadmap.

Yesterday, BGR confirmed the Droid Pro, Droid 2 World Edition, and Motorola Tablet, and now PhoneArena is reporting that they have a "trusty source" inside Verizon that has given them a sneak peek at the device release schedule for the rest of the year.

Let's start with September: we "should" see the Droid 2 World Edition released, and it will be the first Android phone to support both GSM and CDMA networks.

The custom used to be to release two, maybe three, at most four, new flagship smartphones every summer. Now, it appears that the custom is to release as many as possible, as soon as possible. And this latest batch of leaks indicates that Verizon and Motorola have no plans to change that anytime soon.

Droid 2 World Edition

First up for inspection, we have a screenshot of an internal document suggesting that a device with the model number A956 is in the works and will come in both black and white.

It happened to the Droid X, it happened to the Galaxy S, and now it's happening to the Droid 2. The Droid 2's live wallpaper, the one with the evil red eye, has been extracted and is ready to be used on any other device running Android 2.0 or above.

Oh, and as if that wasn't enough, it now comes in nine versions, including:

  • the original wallpaper
  • modified versions called Evil Andy and Evil Grey Andy
  • a mod with the eye from the Droid X, only on the Droid 2's background image
  • a Cyanogen Mod themed one
  • a BlackDroid edition
  • a green theme
  • a gold theme
  • and a wallpaper where the eye is from the Droid 2 and the background is from the Droid X.

After the huge success of the original Droid, the Droid 2 was one of the most hotly anticipated (and most leaked) handsets ever. So, we’ve decided to compile some reviews of the device to help you decide if it’s worth upgrading to the Droid’s sequel. A few minor complaints aside, the general consensus is that this is indeed a worthy successor to the most popular Android phone yet.

Chris Ziegler was impressed by the Droid 2’s improvements over its predecessor, but still recommends the Droid X or Droid Incredible unless a physical keyboard is a must for you.

In case you Droid Incredible owners were jealous that the much older Motorola Droid was getting Froyo, you can rest easy – your Froyo update is good and ready, and it’s set to go out Wednesday, August 18.

The update is over-the-air, so your phone should prompt you to install it. If you don’t want to wait, you can check for the update manually by going to Settings, About Phone, then System Updates.

It looks like the Droid has a second over-the-air update headed its way. The first, which started being pushed out yesterday, was FRG01B and brought Froyo to the most popular Android around. However, a Verizon email tells us that this second update will give Droid owners the ability to download Adobe Flash 10.1, leading us to believe that it is indeed the leaked FRG22 build.

If you’re already enjoying Froyo on you Droid, keep an eye out for a second update, and let us know when it comes.

It's been 8 days since the original Android 2.2 Froyo update for the 1st Motorola Droid leaked out online, and Verizon has been taking its sweet time to make it available to the masses, leaving us guessing whether FRG01B was indeed the final version of this Éclair->Froyo update and whether serious stop-ship bugs were discovered.

Turns out, nothing has changed - FRG01B is exactly the version that Verizon started pushing out to the Droids a few hours ago.

droid-2-benchmark

A picture of a Droid 2’s Quadrant benchmark results has been released, and its score is the best stock store to date at 1,458. This is especially impressive considering the phone is apparently straight from the box.

Compared to the Droid X’s score of roughly 1,100, it’s even more impressive. Because both devices sport nearly identical hardware configurations, the difference most likely comes from Froyo - while the Droid 2 runs Android 2.2, the X only runs 2.1.

It doesn't come as a huge surprise that the rumors regarding Moto's 2nd generation of the most popular Android phone ever were indeed right on the money. VZW announced this morning that Droid 2 will be going to its stores on August 12th, with a pre-sale starting a day earlier at www.verizonwireless.com.

Specs

The phone will ship with Android 2.2, supporting Flash 10.1, and these specs:

  • 3.7" screen
  • 5 MP Camera
  • 3G Mobile Hotspot
  • 1 GHz CPU
  • 8 GB onboard memory
  • 8 GB microSD card installed, support for up to 16 GB
  • DLNA

Bill Ogle, chief marketing officer of Moto Mobile, has this to say about the new Droid incarnation:

With the new DROID 2, we’ve taken a big leap forward from the original DROID.

As the dust settles on the demise of the original DROID, a phoenix arises from the ashes in a downpour of leaks from the Motorola colander. I’m loath to mix metaphors, but the farcical nature of the DROID 2 pre-release circus can only be described in such epic terms. What do we know about the DROID 2?

And finally, now, its price.
