T-Mobile On HTC G2: No Root For You

In case you have been living under a rock, you might not have heard that T-Mobiles HTC G2 was rooted - but only temporarily. After root was gained, it was discovered that HTC included a fail safe measure into the phone that removes root access upon reboot. This blatant attempt to stop users from rooting their phones is being called a "security measure" by HTC. T-Mobile sent the following response to Androinica after they posted an article about the inability to permanently root the G2.

T-Mobile Introduces The LG Optimus T: Android Babysteps

Although the name may be reminiscent of Optimus Prime, this phone might not live up to the most powerful Autobot. Think of the Optimus T as an Android feature phone with the stats of a mid-range device.

It comes packed with the following specs:

Android 2.2 FroYo
3.2 inch capacitive touchscreen
3.2MP Camera (no Flash - what is this, 2005?)
Wifi (includes Mobile Hotspot Option)
GPS
Bluetooth

The Optimus T appears to be the exact opposite of what most people are expecting to see from handset manufacturers: a starter phone. Most of you who are reading this blog are probably hoping to see the latest and greatest in Android handsets, but LG is aiming at the users who are on the fence about Android.

T-Mobile Announces WiFi Calling For Android: Available On The New myTouch, Motorola Defy

We've known it was coming for some time now, but T-Mobile just sent out a press release including details regarding their plans for a WiFi Calling application for their Android phones. The new T-Mobile myTouch will launch later this year with the feature, and the Motorola Defy will be receiving it as well. Additionally, the T-Mobile G2 should be getting it in the coming months, along with the LG Optimus and possibly the Motorola Charm.

The Boy Genius Report sought further details from T-Mobile and got a response explaining the difference between the Android version of WiFi calling and the version used by certain Blackberry phones.

T-Mobile Expands HSPA+ To Cover 16 New Markets

T-Mobile is certainly not resting on their laurels when it comes to bringing 4G speeds to all of their customers! Hot off the heels of the release of their first HSPA+ capable phone, the G2, T-Mobile has turned on their powerful 4G network in the following 16 markets:

Biloxi and Gulfport, MS
Denver, CO
Huntsville, AL
Knoxville, TN
Myrtle Beach, SC
Norfolk, VA
Omaha, NE
Phoenix and Tucson, AZ
Salt Lake City, UT
San Francisco, Sane Jose, Oakland and Sacramento, CA
West Palm Beach, FL

If you still aren't covered, T-Mobile plans to continue expanding their 4G network, ending the year with 100 major markets and 200 million people covered.

T-Mobile Announces The New myTouch: Next Gen Snapdragon, Front Facing Camera, HSPA+, Android 2.2

Just in time for the discontinuation of the original myTouch, the rumored myTouch HD has been made official, albeit with a slight name change (HD has been dropped). And the device is rocking some pretty impressive specs, which may just be enough to draw people away from the G2:

Next generation 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
5 megapixel camera with 720p capture
Front facing camera for video calling over Wi-Fi and 3G
3.8" WVGA screen
Genius Button
Android 2.2 (possibly with Espresso UI)
HSPA+ capabilities

Unfortunately, despite the awesome specs we have available, there's no word on pricing, and the only information we have on a release date is "in time for the holidays." But, right now, the only question on my mind is: when can I pre-order this beast?

T-Mobile G2 Units Shipping With Partial Internal Storage, Loose Hinges

Nothing's perfect, and it looks like the T-Mobile G2 is no exception - according to the latest batch of complaints coming from users who received their devices ahead of the scheduled release date, units are shipping with only 2GB of internal storage, whereas HTC's G2 website lists it at 4GB. Since this just so happens to be the same amount of internal storage offered by the G2's international cousin, the Desire Z, Engadget speculates that a mix-up may have occurred somewhere along the line, a theory which, I am sure, is not far off. Hopefully T-Mobile will be able to replace these phones or provide larger microSD cards to make up for it, because if there's one thing us Android fans do well, it's causing a riot.

Motorola Begonia, The Successor To The Cliq, Rumored To Launch On November 1, Feature WiFi Calling

Those rumors about T-Mobile bringing WiFi calling capabilities to future Android devices are looking less like rumors and more like reality every day now; according to Engadget, a future Motorola Android device codenamed the "Begonia" will feature that capability as well as:

Android 2.2 FroYo (with MotoBlur)
an "interesting" keyboard design
3G hotspot capabilities
a November 1 release date

Engadget's tipster also noted that the Begonia will succeed the original Motorola Cliq, which was already long in the tooth at the beginning of this year and which won't be seeing an update to Android 2.1 until Q4. Not the most exciting upcoming Android phone on T-Mobile, but hey, at least the Charm won't feel lonely!

Samsung Vibrant GPS Fix Through Kies Has Known Issues, T-Mobile Urges Customers To Avoid It

If you just can't wait one more day for a GPS fix for your Samsung Vibrant... you're out of luck, because the recent update through Samsung's sync app Kies, which was supposed to fix all GPS issues, is raising problems of its own, according to T-Mobile.

No word on what the new issues actually are, but hopefully T-Mobile delivers an OTA update "soon" like they've promised. Of course, if they don't, there's always the simpler solution of hacking.
