A Sprint Landmark: Simultaneous Voice And Data Capability On The HTC EVO 4G

Sprint users: have you ever wanted to call somebody or video chat, while surfing the web, all at the same time? With the HTC EVO 4G coming June 4th for $199 (which we wrote about here), you can do just that. Before now, you needed an iPhone or another carrier (most GSM 3G implementations allow for this). Soon, you can do it right on your EVO 4G with Sprint. To quote their official press release:

You can call in your take-out order while you look at their menu on the Internet...[with] simultaneous voice and data capability in 4G and Wi-Fi coverage areas, enabling Web surfing and more while the conversation continues.

Tonight in New York City, Sprint unveils a whopper, and it has nothing (or very little, anyway) to do with Disney's new film Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.

It has everything, however, to do with the newest Android bit of gold: the release date of the HTC EVO 4G, the first 4G phone on Sprint's 4G wireless network.

Until now, all we've seen is a teaser on the phone's home page indicating that it will be available summer 2010 and some unconfirmed rumors about June 6th release date and $199. But now we know for sure when this beauty will hit the streets and how much it will cost.

As you may have seen, I've been running Android 2.1 on my Sprint HTC Hero for a few weeks now, and I'd like to follow up the mega [p]review of all the new features with a few subtle observations that made me, a long-time Hero user, happy.

These may be small things but it takes only a few of them to take the overall phone experience to a new level.

Sprint Follows Verizon, Snubs The Nexus One In Favor Of The EVO 4G

It seems as though carriers that were lined up for the Nexus One are dropping like flies. First comes the news that Verizon has chosen to go forward with the HTC Incredible as opposed to Google's own branded device, and now Sprint has dropped the Nexus One too.

Michelle Leff Mermelstein, Sprint's Consumer Products spokeswoman, told Gizmodo that the reason behind the decision was the "upcoming availability of the award-winning Evo 4G," as the two devices were not so different (I had to link that!).

Admittedly, the Nexus One and Evo 4G do share similar hardware, but it would have been nice to see Sprint subscribers given the choice.

Many of you are complaining about Android 2.1, even though Sprint is well within the promised June timeline.

I understand - it's frustrating to see phone by phone get upgraded with your Hero sitting on the sidelines, ever since its release last October.

I know how you feel but the truth is, we don't know whose fault it is.

Maybe it's Sprint's evil plan for everyone to buy more EVO 4Gs.

Maybe it's HTC's evil plan for everyone to buy more EVO 4Gs.

Maybe it's HTC's development/testing problems that have left Sprint powerless in this situation.

Maybe. We just don't know.

The Latest Official Word From Sprint: Android 2.1 Delayed For Both Samsung Moment And HTC Hero, Update Still Coming In Q2 2010

As we reported yesterday, Sprint has once again pushed back the scheduled Android 2.1 update for the HTC Hero to an unknown future date, destroying expectations of the May 7th release.

Another official confirmation of this was given today in a Sprint statement by another Sprint admin, which notified customers that the delay also affects the Samsung Moment. The official statement on the Sprint forums said

Hello Community Members,

We wanted to let you know that Sprint continues to work closely with Samsung and HTC to deliver the highly anticipated Android 2.1 upgrade for Samsung Moment and HTC Hero.

We are on track for the upgrade to be available in Q2.

The HTC EVO 4G is coming in June, and we all can't wait for it to arrive here. That's why any time a bit of new information about the phone surfaces on the web, we sheeply run over to take a look, our tongues out.

This time, AndroidCentral's sister site PreCentral, or rather one of its users - bnceo got some nice scans of the 4 week advertising campaign RadioShack, now The Shack, is planning to run with for the month before EVO 4G is released. The flyer was given to bnceo quite openly by a sales person, so if you want to see it in full glory, you may have some luck walking into your local RadioShack and simply asking for one.

Have you been dreaming of picking up an HTC EVO 4G the day it comes out sometime in June (I have) but are currently using another carrier, and maybe even stuck in a contract with them?

Or may you've wanted to switch to Sprint because of their amazing Anymobile Anytime plans that offer unlimited minutes to any carrier's mobile numbers - not just Sprint (yeah, my last bill was 6 anytime minutes)?

No May 7th Android 2.1 Update For Sprint HTC Hero - And Yet Again We Are Sad Pandas

The HTC Hero Android 2.1 update (which we previewed in full here) drama can now probably get its own reality show - every week we get a leak or a "source" that promises the update "for sure this time" and then the week goes by - and nothing happens.

The recent May 7th rumor was getting so old and repetitive, we didn't even consider it report-worthy, and now a Sprint community employee has indicated it indeed had no merit.

SarahHS, an official Sprint Community Admin (Sprint Community is Sprint's official forum) closed a thread that posted those same "leaked" Best Buy screenshots that promised the update on the 7th with:

Closing this thread because I don't want folks to think that 2.1 is coming out on the 7th.

Clear Reveals Two New Wi-Max Equipped Android Phones To Be Released In 2010

Corporate press releases are usually pretty boring. Corporate press releases about quarterly earnings? Well, they’re a one way ticket to snoozeville for sure, but every now and then you glean a little nugget of information that rewards you for slogging through the PR babble. In this case, Sprint’s 4G partner Clear has let slip that we can expect both HTC and Samsung to release Android powered handsets with Wi-Max on board by the end of this year.

Seeing as how this is a press release put out by Clear’s corporate office, it’s pretty hard to doubt its veracity. There aren’t many details on the offerings other than they’re both going to be equipped with 3G/4G and WiFi and that the Samsung phone will be ‘optimized for heavy video and video communications use’.
