Sprint Now Offering Protection Plan For Netbooks, Notebooks, And Tablets For $13/Month - $5 More Than Phones

Anyone who previously picked up an internet-device (computer or tablet) from Sprint may have been a little frustrated with the lack of insurance provided by the Now Network. That all changes today, as it has finally decided to toss some coverage to its users that provides some peace of mind if anything were to happen to their netbook, notebook, or tablet.

The coverage is basically like any other carrier: the plan covers mechanical or electrical breakdown, accidental damage, and if the device is lost or stolen. The plan itself will set you back $13 per month with a $100 deductible, but that's a small price to pay to ensure device replacement if something were to happen.

Still Waiting For The OTA? Don't Be - Update Your Sprint Nexus S 4G To Official Android 2.3.5 Manually (Build GRJ90)

After 2 weeks of delays, the much anticipated Nexus S 4G update (Sprint only for now, sorry AT&T/T-Mo) to Android 2.3.5 (GRJ90) started rolling out earlier today. If you haven't gotten yours yet but want to apply it immediately to enjoy that nice boost to 4G speeds, among other things, then proceed to our instructions below - you'll be rocking the official 2.3.5 build in no time.

Instructions

Note: Make sure you're running stock Android 2.3.4, build GRJ22 (the update will likely fail if you're rooted).

Download the update file GRJ90-from-GRJ22 and rename it to update.zip (make sure it's named update.zip and not update.zip.zip if you're using Windows and have it set to hide file extensions).

I know, I know. The last one was under $50, and preferably free. But in our attempt to keep you updated with the latest and greatest deals on the latest and greatest devices, we had to make sacrifices. Fortunately, that means there are also no repeat appearances from last month's post, though you should still check it out - a lot of those handsets (aside from the DROID 2) are still viable choices.

Nexus S 4G Android 2.3.5 Update With WiMAX Speed Improvements Rolling Out July 25

After a delay, Sprint has unveiled the much-awaited Android 2.3.5 update for the Nexus S 4G, and it will start rolling out Monday, July 25th. The update brings a much needed fix for bogged-down 4G speeds on the handset, which have plagued users since the phone's release.

Additionally, some Wi-Fi bugs have been exterminated, the speakerphone should sound better, and TTY support for deaf users has been added. You'll also ~~get a 4G toggle widget~~ (update: maybe not), and NFC will officially be enabled. Here's Sprint's statement on the update:

Sprint To Launch HTC Kingdom As HTC Hero 4G?

Unconfirmed rumours obtained from Pocketnow and a DLNA certificate for the device indicate that the upcoming HTC Kingdom is likely to be sold by Sprint as the HTC Hero 4G. Apparently, there are also indications of the device appearing in the EXIF data on photo-sharing sites.

We came across the HTC Kingdom in early May when a ROM of the device was leaked by the Chinese blog 911sniper. At the time not much was known about the device save for its qHD (540x960px) screen. Later Pocketnow released some updated specs indicating that the HTC Kingdom had a 1.2GHz Qualcomm MSM7630 processor, 768MB RAM, a 5MP camera with 720p video recording, and the device would launch with Android 2.3.3.

Sprint-Branded Samsung Galaxy S II (Within) Poses For Mr. Blurrycam

The all-around awesome Galaxy S II has made debut all over the world to the tune of major success, but nary a peep (aside from the occasional rumor) has been heard about any versions of the phone bound for the US. Today, however, we have a new detail in the form of two blurry shots of the Sprint variant (dubbed the Within), and... well, let's just say anyone who's seen pictures of the GSII before knows what to expect, because not a lot is different here. Of what is shown, the most notable difference (aside from the Sprint branding) seems to be the shape of the camera.

[Deal Alert] Pre-Order The Photon 4G From Wirefly For Just $180

The upcoming Motorola Photon 4G for the Sprint network has been made available for pre-order on Wirefly. While a ship date isn't listed, we know the Photon is being released on the 31st - meaning you can probably expect to receive yours on or a little before that date, if you opt for overnight shipping. $180 will get you on the list for the Photon, but you'll have to be a new Sprint customer to swing that deal.

The Photon 4G is basically a reworked version of the Motorola ATRIX 4G, with a larger display and access to Sprint's WiMAX network.

Sprint To Confirm 4G LTE Deal During Upcoming Earnings Call On July 28th

Sprint has been doing everything in its power to earn customers lately, but this may be the thing that reels in the biggest fish: according to CNET, The Now Network will be announcing a 4-5 billion dollar LTE deal with LightSquared during its upcoming earnings call on July 28th. Sprint launched its WiMax network early-on with Clearwire, which proved to be a hole-in-one for the duo, but Clearwire has since slowed the growth of WiMax due to financial reasons.

Considering VZW's new LTE network has set the standard for 4G across the country, this is the obvious evolution for Sprint to take - and it's reported that it will drop the aforementioned $4-5 billion over the next three to five years on upgrading the network to LTE.

Sprint To Start Throttling Virgin Mobile Smartphone Data - A Sign Of Things To Come?

In what can only be described as a real sphincter-clencher for Sprint customers, the nation's last true unlimited smartphone data provider has made a move that may signal the eventual end of that philosophy.

Yesterday, Sprint announced that customers on its Virgin-branded pre-paid arm, Virgin Mobile, will now be subjected to data throttling after 2.5GB of usage in a month. Sprint claims this will only affect 3% of all Virgin mobile data subscribers. The throttling will limit data hogs to a paltry 256Kbits/s once they've capped out at the 2.5GB mark in a single month - which is actually a little better than what T-Mobile does (dropping people to EDGE speeds).

Samsung Epic 4G Android 2.3 Update Imminent? Looks Like It.

Nearly a month ago a Gingerbread build for the Samsung Epic 4G leaked, and if Sprint's website is any indication (and it is), the finalized update may be nearly ready to go. The official product listing for the Epic now says the device ships with Android 2.3 - a pretty strong suggestion indeed, and not likely to be a typo.

We don't have any indication of when, but given Sprint and Samsung's history on updates, anything we did hear - even if official - would probably get pushed back anyway. With that in mind, let's just hope it's soon, but don't get your hopes too high, eh?
