Those looking for an off-contract deal on fairly recent phones have a treat today: the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Galaxy S4 are available in refurbished condition on eBay for $320 (Note 3) and $220 (S4) with free shipping. They are Verizon devices, but are unlocked and technically able to pick up 3G from GSM carriers, according to the seller.
You can buy a Gear VR in the US now, but you need a Galaxy Note 4 to get any use out of the device. While the headset comes with extra sensors, much of the computing power takes place on the smartphone side of things. An update is now rolling out to the Sprint and Verizon versions of the Note 4 that get things ready to go. Read More
Republic Wireless announced a few weeks ago that it would be selling the new Moto X for a reasonably discounted price of $399. Today that deal is getting a little sweeter with an extra $50 off. This deal is only good for 24 hours, and it starts right now.
T-Mobile's unlimited talk, text, and data plan is the big carrier option to beat at $80 a month. But so far it's only been available to individual customers - if you have four people and you want four lines of unlimited data, you need four different accounts. Starting tomorrow, December 10th, unlimited data will be available for families as well. The cheapest option is unlimited talk, text, and data on two lines for $100 a month, a $60 savings over the old structure. Read More
Ting has attracted many customers with its low-cost, pay-for-what-you-use tier-based approach to mobile service (give me a second, I'm sure I could fit more hyphens into this sentence), but some have been put off by the company's reliance on the Sprint network. Starting February 2015, folks will have a choice. Ting will start offering a GSM option for people who just want to pop a SIM card into their existing unlocked phone. Read More
If you own a Sharp Aquos Crystal on Sprint, you've got an update on the way. According to Sprint, there are quite a few bug fixes as well as some new bloatware added, such as Sprint's new premium caller ID service that lets you see a caller's name as well as their phone number, and integration with Yahoo's Communications Suite.
The new update bumps the firmware version to SA300 and is still based on Android 4.4.2/KitKat. Read More
It took a while to get the bootloader situation figured out, but there are finally some ROMs showing up for the LG G3 on AT&T. There's even a build of CyanogenMod 11, which was just posted today. It's a nightly, but it's still official support.
Well, it's not really a surprise, but T-Mobile has backed out of its commitment to start selling the LTE-equipped Nexus 9 in early December (which is now). A leaked internal communication simply says the launch has been postponed and there is no new window.
Remember last night, when we were excited about the Galaxy S5 getting its Android 5.0 update already, at least in Poland? That was nice. Let's try to hang on to that warm, comforting feeling while we face this cold fact: a combination of lowered expectations for non-flagship devices and good old US carrier apathy means many Android owners won't be so lucky. For example, the Galaxy S4 Zoom on AT&T is just now getting its update to Android 4.4, more than a year after the release of both KitKat and the phone itself. Read More

Are you stuck in a two-year contract that you signed to get a steep discount on your phone? Are you ready to make a change to a carrier that at least pretends that it needs your business? Then Ting would like a word. The Sprint MVNO is doubling down on its offer to help pay off your early termination fee, up to $150. Read More
