Yesterday, Samsung released a fairly minor update for the Epic 4G. There are only a handful of changes, including some light optimizations and a few small bug fixes - but more importantly, it adds Media Hub functionality. Media Hub is a new service that was introduced last night by Samsung, and provides access to movies and TV shows from most of the big dogs - not too shabby.

As promised, Samsung is holding their event in New York City right now, and at that very event, they've just announced that their smoking hot Galaxy Tab will be hitting all four major carriers (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile) sometime during October or November. Unfortunately, they've decided to leave the exact release dates up to the carriers.

Pricing is a similar story: the carriers get to decide. On a related note, however, Samsung has announced that the keyboard dock for the Tab (the one that essentially looks like a carbon copy of another popular tablet made by a company whose name is also a fruit) will retail for $100 and the desktop dock (again, reminiscent of a strangely similar dock for the iPad) will sell for $50.

Developing apps can be both exciting and enjoyable. Integrating your apps with the latest 4G technology can be even more rewarding. As a leader in providing 4G coverage, Sprint has come together with Wired, Reddit and Ars Technica to offer some great rewards for the right app. Sprint wants you to showcase what can be achieved when you make full use of 4G.

If you want to lay claim to the rewards on offer you need to create an app for one of the following categories:

  • Video, Multimedia & Augmented Reality
  • Gaming
  • Productivity, Business & Utilities
  • Social Networking
  • Entertainment

You can either reinvent an existing killer app of yours or develop a brand new app from scratch.

BGR Galaxy Tab Leak

BGR Galaxy Tab Leak

Well it isn't exactly unexpected, but the Boy Genius Report claims to have multiple sources inside Verizon Wireless who not only sent them the above image, but also were able to confirm that Samsung will announce more about this particular 7-inch tablet at its September 16 media event.

Additionally, Engadget decided to join the internal screenshot party and provide an image of their own, which is essentially the same, only a lot sharper and inserted below.

With a leaked 2.2 build for the DROID X already floating around, Froyo for the DROID X is not a matter of if, but when. Unfortunately, "when" is best answered as "soon." This was the speculation after the leak, but soon has not come nearly soon enough. Given Motorola's very stern warning regarding copyright infringement on the leaked version, the delay is probably owed to Moto patching up the exploits that have allowed the DROID X to be rooted and its bootloader security to be circumvented (à la Birdman and Koush).

Wow, what a day today for Verizon's Samsung Fascinate! When it was introduced for $199 on a contract, Verizon threw in a 2-for-1 deal, making the price $99.99 if you buy 2.

Shortly after, Wirefly and Amazon Wireless both dropped the price to $99.99, making it a great deal for those who need only 1 Fascinate.

Today, the price war got serious. Really serious.

  • Amazon Wireless is now selling the Fascinate to new accounts at exactly $0.01, which is a penny over absolutely free.

Well, Verizon is up to their old tricks again. Last time they did something worthy of a head-scratch was just a short time ago, when they forced Bing onto the Fascinate and abandoned the built-in Google bits and pieces for search.

Now they've decided that, in addition to Google Maps, Google Search, and Google Voice Search not being necessary, the Android MARKET is insufficient. Introducing the Vcast App Store!

It’s not uncommon to see the big chains try to get a piece of the smartphone launch action with price reductions by mail-in-rebate. However, the hassle that this process usually entails doesn’t make things all that enticing to customers. Thankfully pre-orders for the G2 aren’t yet open on T-Mobile’s website, so prospective buyers now have the pleasure in knowing they’ll be able to get in instant discount with RadioShack, bringing the price down to $149.99 on a two year contract.

MTHD

TmoNews has scored what could be a leaked internal document on the upcoming T-Mobile myTouch HD. I want to say up front (although this is purely my own opinion) that I think it could be fake. I'm not convinced of that, but I'm certainly not convinced it's real, either. That said, here's what it provides for specs:

  • HSPA+
  • Android 2.2
  • "1 GHz Dual Processor"
  • 4 GB ROM, 8 GB mSD card included
  • 5 MP rear, VGA front cameras
  • Swype
  • Looks like HDMI-out of some sort (microHDMI?)

Other features: the front facing camera can obviously be used for video chat over 3G, HSPA+, and Wi-Fi.

The Galaxy Tab is really shaping up to one awesome tablet, and if this latest rumor from the Wall Street Journal turns out to be true, a lot of people will be able to experience it for themselves.

Apparently, "three people familiar with the matter" told WSJ that Samsung already has deals with Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T that involve a certain 7-inch tablet - deals similar to the ones made for the Galaxy S line of phones.
