So look, Verizon's price for the Motorola Droid 2 Global is nice (or at least pretty decent for a phone loaded with a 1.2GHz processor and dual GSM/CDMA radios), but it can't stand up to the deals you and I both know Wirefly's been cooking up. Well now the Internet's largest authorized retailer of cell phones has come out and made it official - it's selling both the white and the regular versions of the phone for just $99.99 with a new two-year contract.
Along with hundreds of thousands of people inhabiting the San Francisco Bay Area, I've been waiting for the Sprint 4G launch ever since Google graciously gifted us the EVO 4G powerhouses back at the I/O conference. In fact, it was June 16th, which happens to be my birthday, when I first noticed a strong 4G signal in Mountain View, not too far from Google's own headquarters. Little did I know back then that the wait was not over, and we wouldn't be getting 4G until the very end of the year.
The Black Friday is long gone, but another, potentially even bigger event, called Cyber Monday, is now upon us. Cyber Monday is what happens when the Black Friday goes online, and Virgin Mobile USA does not disappoint. The carrier, which uses Sprint's network, is offering its only Android handset, the Samsung Intercept, for a whopping $75 off. The deal is valid for the duration of Cyber Monday, so hurry up if you want this 800MHz Android QWERTY slider for $175, with free shipping.
As the Thanksgiving weekend is coming to an end, residents of Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Miami, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Columbus can say thank you to Sprint today as well. The nation's 3rd largest mobile carrier announced that 4G, otherwise known as WiMax, is officially live in the aforementioned cities. This puts the Los Angeles area full 2 days ahead of schedule, as the 4G launch there was expected on December 1st.
After the positive impact HTC's T-Mobile G2 made on American reviewers, it's no wonder the company has decided to try to impress their European colleagues with a similar phone, the Desire Z. The phone is available now from Vodafone, 3 Mobile, Virgin Mobile, O2, Talk Mobile, Orange, and Tesco Mobile if you want to take the leap; the question is, should you? Read on to see what four expert reviewers from TechRadar, CNET UK, Pocket-Lint, and PhoneArena had to say on the subject.
Despite the fact that Gingerbread is set to be released in the next few weeks, some of us are still waiting for an update to a version of Android two decimal places behind - Android 2.1, aka Éclair. Such is life for owners of AT&T's Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 who, after jealously watching as Scandinavian X10 owners received the update on Halloween night, are being told that 2.1 has been delayed yet again for their devices.
If you thought Amazon's recent deals on all AT&T Android phones and all Verizon Droids were good, just wait 'til you see what they've got in store for the holidays. Amazon Wireless' Black Friday deals are now up, though without a definitive end date - instead, the deals will be available while supplies last. Of course, it goes without saying that Amazon Wireless does not charge tax in most states (except for KY, KS, NY, ND, and WA) and has free shipping, beating out carriers' own retail stores any day.
And with that, we solidly conclude that Android truly has visited 99% of the mobile form factors out there. That's right, people, the Motorola Droid Pro has arrived in the Android Police offices, and after spending the last week or so with it, I can tell you - with a straight face, nonetheless - that RIM's got serious competition here. The handset isn't exactly all that and a piece of cake, but it's definitely up there, at least for enterprise customers.
XDA-developers, who originally leaked details on the phone under the codename HTC Knight, have now provided more information on this bad boy, now known as HTC EVO Shift 4G (model number PG06100). Most of these specs aren't too surprising, but do leave a lot of room for questions:
- Android 2.2
- Sliding QWERTY Keyboard
- 3.7″ Screen
- 800Mhz Processor or 1Ghz Dual Core Snapdragon according to a different source
- 512MB RAM
- 5 MP Camera or 8 MP according to a different source
- Sprint 4G
Assuming the 800 MHz processor and 5 MP camera are correct, then this is almost definitely Sprint's version of the Desire Z (the same as T-Mobile's G2).
T-Mobile is claiming that they have the largest "4G" network in the country, and they must be pretty serious about defending that title - they've just rolled out their HSPA+ network, theoretically capable of download speeds of 21Mbps, to these eight areas:
- Detroit, Michigan
- Grand Junction, Colorado
- Harlingen, Texas
- Lafayette and South Bend, Indiana
- Montgomery, Alabama
- Roanoke-Lynchburg, Virginia
- Youngstown, Ohio
These were all listed on T-Mobile's 4G coverage map as "coming soon", so if you're still on that list, T-Mobile is probably already working to cover you.
