AT&T Accidentally Outs The HTC Liberty On Purpose

Yeah, so the title may be a bit confusing, but it’s more or less an accurate summary. Basically, AT&T released a (promo?) video detailing their testing procedure for Android phones, in which Dante Martin, a device product manager at AT&T, waves around a HTC Android handset that looks a whole lot like the Aria whose leaked pictures were outed a few weeks ago.

In addition to those leaked pictures, ROM developer Coinflipper sent Android Central a render of a HTC device dubbed the ‘Liberty’. The device in the render is very similar to the device in the leaked Aria picture, and the user-agent for both the Aria and the Liberty both show a 320x480 resolution, indicating that they may be the same phone.

Free Android WiFi Tether For Root Users App Now Supports WPA2 And Full Hotspot (Infrastructure) Capabilities On EVO 4G

Only 5 days ago the brilliant team behind the android-wifi-tether project, which provides free WiFi hotspot capabilities to rooted phones, added support for EVO 4G. This meant users of this recently released beast could now turn their phones into WiFi routers, broadcasting WiFi signal to devices nearby, thus removing the need for a similar application Sprint charges $30/month for.

Well, there were a couple of limitations:

The android-wifi-tether hotspot ran in ad-hoc mode, which meant devices that didn't support ad-hoc mode couldn't use or even see it. This included other Android phones, some game consoles (like the Wii), and other devices.

Motorola Droid 2 Photos And Specs Leaked

With details of the Motorola Droid 2 starting to find their way into the outside world, we now have photos and specifications of the new device, thanks to Droid Life!

Aesthetically, it doesn’t look like much has changed from the original Droid that we all know and love. The exterior remains mostly the same apart from the slide out keyboard, which is the only part of the device that appears to be significantly different.

The clunky d-pad from the original Droid is gone, and the flat keyboard has been replaced by a more tactile model. Thanks to the exclusion of the d-pad, the keys look slightly larger and easier to type on than the original model too.

UK readers only: if you like adorable handsets running an operating system with an adorable mascot or, and perhaps more importantly, if you like free things, then you owe the X10 Mini a few minutes of your time.

It’s not the most powerful Android handset on the block, and hell, it’s not even running Android 2.1, for an attractive, and again, free, Android handset, it’s not a bad deal.

Of course, as with most free phone offers, it will require you to sign your soul away for two years with a new contract, but on the bright side, you have your choice of four carriers to deal with.

It’s A Hit! The EVO 4G Sells Out

One of the things I love most about Android is that when one phone does especially well, it’s a benefit to the entire Android community. The more users that have Android phones in their hand, the more incentive developers have to focus on the Android platform.

In this case, the phone doing especially well is the EVO 4G, which shattered Sprint’s single day sales record, and now, is completely sold out after being on the market for only 4 days.

Samsung Galaxy S US Launch Roundup: Event On June 29th – T-Mobile Launch On July 21st?

There’s been an increasing amount of buzz on the interwebs this week regarding a potential launch of the Samsung Galaxy S here in the United States in the next coming months. Rather than several posts covering each detail, I figured I’d just tie them all into one giant lump of Samsung-y goodness.

First, the facts: We know for sure that Samsung is planning an event in New York City on June 29th centered entirely around the Galaxy S. Cnet’s Bonnie Cha received a package from Samsung hyping the event, which included a set of USB powered speakers shaped like a flying saucer.

Froyo Coming To The MyTouch 3G?

Good news for users of the T-Mobile MyTouch 3G: It seems you will be receiving some Froyo love after all!

Nothing is 100% official at the moment, but the T-Mobile fanatics over at TmoNews have a pretty convincing screenshot that supposedly details the upcoming upgrade for the MyTouch 3G.

In addition to the upgrade to 2.2, T-Mobile is apparently planning on throwing in the modified ‘Faves Gallery’, and ‘Genius Button’ applications as well. Initially I interpreted the announcement to mean that exiting MyTouch 3G’s will receive the OS facelift that the MyTouch Slide has benefited(?) from, but after another read-over, it seems that is not the case.

Qik’s Launch On The EVO 4G: Where Did It Go Wrong?

With the release of the EVO 4G on Friday, a lot of people were looking forward to using the front facing camera for two-way video chat. The few lucky people who attended Google I/O were each given an EVO 4G, only to find that they couldn’t use the two-way video chat, as Qik wanted to wait until the official launch date to update the software.

With the EVO in the hands of thousands of developers who attended I/O, Qik could have beta tested their new features to make sure the release was as smooth as possible.

EVO 4G users, rejoice! As of a few minutes ago, you can enjoy unlimited free WiFi/Bluetooth tethering using the Wireless Tether for Root users (or simply android-wifi-tether) app.

The app's main committer Harald Mue, who doesn't even have the EVO in his possession, together with a community contributor Andrew Robinson (who does have one) have figured out what was going wrong with the EVO compared to other phones and together collaborated on a fix all within 2 days of finding the problem

Hey, wait a minute, wasn't the EVO released the same 2 days ago? Community dedication never ceases to amaze me.

New Motorola Droid Unofficial Froyo (2.2) Update Supports WiFi And Overclocking

My Droid World is on a roll! Yesterday they brought us a working Froyo update for Motorola Droid but it came with a serious omission - WiFi was not included.

After taking a breather, a few hours later they produced another version, this time with support for WiFi and overclocking.

There are a number of download options, varying in the CPU frequency hardcoded into the kernel - from 800 MHz to 1250 MHz, so grab the one you want and see if it's stable enough (I promise you - it will be FAST). If the one you grabbed is not stable, grab one with a lower frequency, and rinse and repeat until it all works well.
