EVO 4G (Yes, The Old One) Gets Its First Software Update In Nearly A Year - Just Security Fixes

While it's been nearly a year since Sprint last issued an OTA update to the EVO 4G, it looks like the Now Network isn't quite content to let the first EVO die just yet. A small patch incorporating security fixes was announced over at the Sprint Community forum today, bringing the EVO to version 5.07.651.6.

While this may not be the world's most anticipated update, it's definitely a noteworthy one. It's one of the first times we've seen an Android phone get an official update after over two years on the market, at least in the US.

U.S. Cellular Announces New LTE Markets For 2013, Should Cover 87 Percent Of Customers By Year's End

In the (seemingly) never-ending race to offer LTE, U.S. Cellular has just announced a fairly major expansion to its 4G LTE network that will take place over the course of 2013. By the time the end of the year rolls around, the company expects to offer LTE to 87 percent of its customers, which is a 26 percent increase over its current network.

At the current time, the company is being a little vague about exactly which cities are going to get LTE coverage, citing only that "select cities in California, Kansas and Nebraska" will gain the ultra-fast connection, with specific mention of "Lincoln, Neb., Omaha, Neb., Manhattan, Kan., Eureka, Calif.

[Deal Alert] HTC One VX In Red And White Is $.01 From AT&T And Amazon Wireless, Respectively

Want An HTC One VX for V-Day, for practically nothing? Then head to AT&T's website or Amazon, depending upon which color you prefer. Both have the device on sale for $.01 with a new or extended contract, but AT&T has the red version, while Amazon has the white. The regular subsidized price from both retailers for the phone is $49.99. I'd go with the white ( it looks a little more snazzy) but there's no accounting for taste.

HTC Droid DNA To Get Updated To Version 2.04.605.2 710RD, Bringing A Slew Of Improvements

Verizon's newest Droid is set to receive a software update over the air, and it actually has a number of important fixes and improvements. This isn't going to bump the device up to a new version of Android, but it's still a hefty download at 103.5 MB.

Here is the full list of changes coming in the update:

  • User can load videos on HuluPlus
  • Improvements to Hotspot connectivity have been made
  • Improvements to Audio Quality for wired headsets and earpieces have been made
  • Bluetooth connectivity and volume level for specific models have been improved
  • Enhanced reliability and stability of the Contacts List have been made
  • Wi-Fi Connectivity has been improved
  • Improvements to default browser for zooming capability have been made
  • Incoming messages display with the correct timestamp
  • Enhanced Recent Apps functionality has been improved

Granted, a lot of this should not have been busted in the first place, but it's nice to see so many fixes in one package.

Sprint Updates The LG Viper 4G To Version LS840ZVK For Better LTE Reception

Quick note, LG Viper owners: If you're getting an update request this afternoon, don't get too excited. The newest software addition isn't any flavor of Jelly Bean. It's just a small update that addresses "LTE network acquisition improvements", which probably means it'll help you when transitioning from Sprint's old and busted 3G network to the new LTE hotness.

AT&T MiFi Liberate Hotspot Review: It Has LTE, A Touchscreen, And Amazing Battery Life - Any More Questions?

Mobile data hotspots aren't the world's most exciting products, though if you travel consistently, they can be an absolute lifesaver. But let's be brutally honest: the average mobile data consumer really doesn't care about the hotspot itself - as long as it works. They care about the network, and the monthly pricing. That's really it.

The hotspot is basically just a tiny little Wi-Fi router with a cellular modem and a lithium-ion battery inside.

[Update: Rollout Starts Feb. 12th] Motorola Begins Jelly Bean (Android 4.1.2) Rollout For The Electrify M On US Cellular

Update: We've heard from US Cellular that the rollout will begin on February 12th - apparently someone jumped the gun on the update page.

After promising to do so in Q1 2013 back in December, Motorola has officially begun rolling out Android 4.1.2 to the Electrify M on US Cellular. The Electrify M is basically a de-Verizoned RAZR M, so it makes sense that the Electrify's update follows after its DROID kin's.
