After MoDaCo's recent report that HTC's Bootloader Unlock tool didn't work for AT&T's One X variant,  The Verge reached out to the Taiwanese manufacturer, and received a reply which suggested that the device has "restrictions" which prevent its bootloader from being unlockable:

HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months.

That's a lofty claim, isn't it? Isn't there a new "next generation" every year? Well, to answer that last question, not always. But technology is evolving at such a rapid pace in the mobile world that we can scarcely buy a phone today without something better coming out a month later. And today, just days from Samsung's announcement of the next Galaxy phone, everyone is watching with bated breath to see what comes next.

HTC's One X is hands-down the best smartphone released this year. While the version we're seeing here in the States (on AT&T, to be specific) isn't quite the beast the quad-core version found overseas is, the AT&T variant does pack LTE. Other specs:

  • 1.5GHz Snapdragon S4 dual-core CPU (Krait architecture)
  • 4.7" 720p display (1280x720)
  • 16GB memory
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8MP rear shooter, 1.3MP front
  • Full 1080p HD video recording at 60fps
  • 802.11b/g/n
  • Bluetooth 4.0
  • Android 4.0.x
  • Sense 4.0

Thankfully, those cutting-edge specs aren't going to break your budget, either: the phone is now available for pre-order on Amazon Wireless for $150 for both the gray and white models - that's $50 less than you'll pay to get it straight from AT&T.

Not that we assume you've forgotten, but here's a quick reminder for anyone who has been waiting for the HTC One X on AT&T: pre-orders begin today. You'll have to wait until May 6th to get your device, but with that date still two weeks away, you can at least guarantee to have one in-hand on launch day.

Specs:

  • 4.7-Inch SuperLCD 2 1280x720 display with Gorilla Glass 2
  • 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Krait processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • LTE
  • 8MP f/2.0 rear shooter with zero shutter lag
  • 1.3MP front camera
  • NFC
  • Android 4.0.x with Sense 4

The device will set you back $199 with a two-year agreement - a rather reasonable price for what could be one of the biggest flagships we've seen this year.

I'm convinced that April 22, 2012 will forever be recognized as one of the most Android-packed day of all time. Why, you ask? Because that's the day that the day that Sprint's Galaxy Nexus, LG Viper, and LG Optimus Elite will be available, as well as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7 and ASUS Transformer Pad 300. Looks like AT&T didn't want to be left out, so it announced this morning that its version of the HTC One X would be available for pre-order on that very day for $199, with a release date set for May 6th (which lines up with previous rumors - good job, Best Buy!).

AT&T's long, drawn out game of catch-up with Verizon is moving one step closer to completion. According to AT&T, Cleveland, New Orleans, Staten Island, and 9 other cities will be added to the list that will taste the sweet LTE waters "soon." The 12 markets are scheduled to receive LTE in "April, May and into the early summer."

Update 4/3/12: Muncie, Bloomington, Bryan-College Station are live.

Mid-last month, AT&T announced that it would bringing LTE to 12 new markets in "April, May, and into early summer." It appears to be making good on those plans beginning now, as it's going to flip the switch in three new markets on April 8th:

  • Muncie, IN
  • Bloomington, IN
  • Bryan-College Station, TX

This gives AT&T a total of 31 LTE markets now, putting it pretty far behind Verizon's "more than 200 cities."

There's no word as to when it should roll out the rest of the promised markets, but it's nice to see it getting an early start delivering the goods.

Many AT&T customers have been chomping at the bit waiting for any word on when the upcoming HTC One X could hit the scene, and thanks to Best Buy, we may finally have an idea as to when that may be.

The Double B has been taking pre-orders for the One X for a few weeks now, but even then, didn't tell customers when they could expect their glorious new handset to arrive.

The AT&T Galaxy SII (i777) isn't the only Android device getting official CyanogenMod 9 nightly love today, as the first nightlies just went live for the HP TouchPad (codename tenderloin) and the LG Nitro HD (codename p930, also known as LG Optimus LTE on Bell Canada).

Definition: A "nightly" is a bleeding edge release that is built on a daily basis, usually at night after a full day's worth of new code has been committed.

The CyanogenMod team has done it again, bringing their CM9 build for AT&T's variant of the Samsung Galaxy SII to nightly status, and releasing the build to the CyanogenMod mirror network just yesterday.

The build actually released just before news that a seemingly official (and fully TouchWiz-ed) build of ICS had leaked for AT&T's SII, so SII owners have a couple of great options to satisfy their Ice Cream Sandwich cravings.
