It's Official – Samsung Galaxy SIII Headed To Five Carriers In The US Beginning This Month

Well folks, it's official. In a press release sent out just moments ago, Samsung confirmed that the Galaxy SIII, easily one of the most anticipated smartphones this year, will be available on five major carriers in the US beginning this month.

The carriers, which are expected to make individual announcements in the "coming weeks," include AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless, and US Cellular. And yes, the SIII's design will be consistent across all carriers. Feast your eyes on some official (non-carrier specific) press images below:

For those wondering, some of the rumors we've heard about the US' Galaxy SIII are indeed true.

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson Says Customers Can Expect To See A Move Toward Data-Only Cell Phone Plans In The Next Two Years

We've reported on AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson's ideas on "toll-free" data usage, but it looks like he's expecting another big shift in data plans - the availability of data-only cellphone plans.

Indicating that we could expect such plans to arrive within two years' time, Stephenson said that text messages and phone calls "would be considered just another form of data." So, instead of having limits on minutes, text messages, and data usage, all would be combined under a single counter.

Carriers such as AT&T make a good deal of their profits from calling and texting plans because they use such little data, but Stephenson believes that these data-only plans are necessary because of the growing prominence of apps such as Skype that replace the functionality of phone calls using data.

AT&T Users Could See "Toll-Free" Data Plans In The Next 12 Months, Says CEO Randall Stephenson

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, speaking at the Sanford Bernstein Strategic Decisions conference, teased a possible solution for customers who feel beleaguered by tiered data, and who have been avoiding data-heavy services due to plan limitations.

Stephenson suggested that, as part of new "toll free" data plans, certain data-hungry services' traffic would be excluded from users' monthly data allotment, meaning that services like, for example, Netflix, could be used without eating up your entire data plan.

According to FierceWireless, Stephenson indicated that content providers have been suggesting this approach prior to today's talk:

[Exclusive] How To Root The AT&T HTC One X On Version 1.85 (Or Earlier)

While giving the AT&T HTC One X's firmware a look over, I ran across a a vulnerability that would allow us to gain root access. It turned out not to be all that useful at the time, as another root was released the same day. With the latest 1.85 firmware leak, the previously published root has been fixed, making the one I found earlier useful once again.

Update: AT&T disabled the app installation features of Ready2Go thereby breaking this root process. We don't have an updated root method at this time.

This vulnerability happens to be in carrier bloat - specifically an app called ATT Ready2Go (also know as dashconfig), which is shipping on many new AT&T LTE devices.

After HTC basically pointed the finger at AT&T for the bootloader situation on the American version of the One X (which is technically the One XL), many an enthusiast voiced their disapproval. Now, a very clever XDA member (grankin01) has discovered how to unlock the bootloader of the beast using a simple but ingenious method - trick it into thinking it's from Canada.

United States Customs Halts HTC One X And EVO 4G LTE Shipments At Ports Pending "Investigation" Of Apple Patent Claims

US Customs has halted at least some shipments of the HTC One X and EVO 4G LTE (presumably at the Port of Los Angeles), as a result of an earlier ITC order won by Apple over a patent lawsuit for "data tapping" (context-sensitive text-based actions) in the browser and messaging apps on some HTC phones.

These features, HTC contends, have been removed from the One X and EVO 4G LTE, and HTC is "confident" that it is in compliance with the ruling:

Mugen, I think I speak for everyone when I say "please stop." I mean, really? Look at their latest creation, a 5400mAh extended battery for the already gargantuan Galaxy Note:

If you own a Galaxy Note and have grown tired of carrying around a small diesel generator, though, this may be the solution to all of your problems. Of course, no one said this solution didn't come with problems of its own. Like looking as though you have some sort of awful malignant growth attached to your thigh should you dare to put your Note in your pocket with this monster attached.

Samsung And AT&T Cancel The Galaxy II Skyrocket HD

TheVerge has just learned that the previously-upcoming Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD, an upmarket version of the Galaxy S II with LTE and a larger HD display, will not be released.

Previously announced at CES, the HD would have been the flagship Samsung device in AT&T's lineup. In light of the launch of the HTC One X, though, the HD was simply outgunned. Rumors prior to the launch of the Galaxy S III also indicated Samsung had moved up the release date of the next Galaxy in order to get a leg up on the competition (namely, HTC). This suggests that the HD was planned under a different timeline - one where the S3 may have been coming to the US significantly later.

AT&T Is Working On Shared Data Plans, Finally Device Consolidation Might Be Possible

The CEO of AT&T's mobile business, Ralph de la Vega, told CNET in an interview that the company is working on family data plans that would give consumers one big pot of data that all devices could share. While minute plans have worked this way for years, since tiered data came along, customers have been waiting on a way to pool their data.

No details are available on how the plans will work, or how it will affect subsidized devices. It's also unclear whether or not devices like tablets would be entered into the mix. One of the biggest hang ups on selling network-enabled tablets (aside from the increased device price) is convincing customers to buy into yet another data plan.

I've had the European version of the One X for a few weeks now and in my book, it's the best damn phone on the market right now, bar none. David spent some time with the AT&T variant (which lost some cores and storage but picked up LTE on its trip to the States) and came away equally as impressed, calling it "the best all-around Android phone you can buy in the US today."

Surprisingly, the price is entirely reasonable, too - it checks in at just $550 off contract, $200 on contract from AT&T, or $150 from Amazon Wireless.
