This morning, I got a new app tip in my inbox with an inconspicuous subject "New android app." Not knowing what to expect, I opened it up and read the following, followed by the app's description:

Good news! We just launched a new essential android application: the Wankometer.

At this point, I stopped reading, experiencing conflicting feelings that can only be described as a mix of extreme WTFness, curiosity, and preliminary pride for the Android platform (I had a feeling that Steve Jobs would not let this app into the iOS App Store, and I was right).

android cloud

While we love apps like Titanium Backup that make restoring your data relatively easy when you upgrade phones, buy a tablet, or switch to a new ROM, what if they weren't even necessary? What if all of your apps' data could be stored in the cloud? This would not only make backing up and restoring easier, but it would save you a big chunk of SD card storage, right? It turns out that these capabilities have been present in the Android OS since the arrival of Froyo last year.

This contest is now over. We have selected the winners - see if you are one of them towards the bottom of the page.

Guess what time it is! That's right, it's time for another giveaway, and this time we've partnered up with HyperBees to give away 3 Zeemote Bluetooth gaming controllers (~$30 value each), all for downloading and trying out the free version of their very popular Speedx 3D. The game has been out for a while in paid-only form, but this week Hyperbees released a free ad-supported version, which they are now trying to promote.

Angry Birds Rio

A video of Ville Heijari, a Rovio "Bird Whisperer" (aka representative), showing off the gameplay of the upcoming Angry Birds Rio popped up on YouTube this morning. While the gameplay looks like much of the same kamikaze fowl-smashing action we have come to know and love, there are a few new additions. The evil pigs and stolen eggs are gone, animal poachers are in, and you now have boss fights.

The Rovio employee described the upcoming game as featuring "no eggs, no pigs, but just pure anger." He promises many episodes lined up for 2011, inferring that the game will be continuously updated with new levels.

If your Android device relies on your interaction with it in order to do things, you're seriously missing out. There are several options that allow you to cut the cord, so to speak. The popular options have long been Locale and Tasker but, as you can see from their market pages, you have to be fiscally dedicated to the tasks they perform. In addition to that, these applications (Tasker especially) can be somewhat (read extremely) intimidating in the level of control they give you and the sheer volume of options at your disposal.

Facebook for Android got updated today, bringing several new features to your Android social networking hub. The biggest addition is that you can now upload pictures directly to your friends' walls from your phone. You can also upload photos to Groups. Aside from that they added SSL for improved security, some additional photo uploading tweaks and various bug fixes.

You can check out the full changelog in the screenshot below, and head over to the Market to update.

Welcome to the weekly roundup of the best new Android applications, games, and live wallpapers that went live in the Market or were spotted by us in the previous week or so.

One thing I'd like to point out this week - the apps are just getting prettier and prettier. They are no longer those ugly ogre-like beasts we used to see so much, but polished, pretty flowers (I mean, muscle cars, beer, bench press, aww, it's too late now).

netflix

The APK for one of the most lusted-after Android apps, Netflix, leaked on to the Internet today. However, whether you can actually do anything with it is another question altogether (the answer to which is not entirely clear yet).

I was able to install the app on my EVO, and everything looked good up until the point where I actually wanted to watch a movie - and then... nothing. Most users have reported similar results, though at least one person claimed that it is fully functional, with a tweet "works on fascinate" (of course, anyone can say that on Twitter, so take it as you wish).

Amazon Appstore- Apps and Prices Leak

Well look what we have here: it appears that the site androidnews.de has stumbled upon some (apparently accidentally) posted apps from Amazon's upcoming Android app store. What were the site's daring investigative journalistic practices that led to the discovery? According to Frank from the site, "This morning, just for funzies, I entered http://www.amazon.com/apps in the address bar and found myself on a site with a horizontal slider. 48 apps were shown there.

The GO Dev Team, the people who brought you the popular apps GO SMS, GO Weather, and GO Launcher, are at it again, bringing you a contacts manager and dialer that is, quite frankly, stunning, both in functionality and aesthetics. It dropped into the market not 12 hours ago and is already getting very popular as well as garnering great reviews. Let's take a closer look, shall we?
