Bjork-Thumb

Bjork's Biophilia part-album, part-app is an educational experience that teaches kids both about music and the natural sciences. That it helps prevent risky behavior by giving youth a chance to experience an acid trip without doing drugs is an added perk. At some point there appears to be a dis-embodied pelvis making love with the moon, suggesting that some type of abstract sexual education may have slipped in as well. Now all of this is available in the Play Store, two years after Biophilia's iOS debut.

chromebeta

Google sometimes likes to throw fun little changes into beta builds of Chrome, with the most experimental of features being tucked away safely in the chrome://flags/ menu. Today's build – which just started rolling out a little while ago – brings one such feature to the table: the ability to access menu functions in one motion. It's called draggable menu, and it's easy to enable and even easier to use.

A new version of Chrome has hit the beta channel, and that means it's on Android in the Chrome beta app. Most updates these days are staged rollouts, but I'm already seeing version 29 on all my devices. No promises, though.

Version 29 of Chrome adds support for WebRTC, a real-time communication API based on JavaScript. This will enable web-based voice calling, video chat, and file sharing without installing any additional software.

If you're wondering if the new Play Store is acting a little weird for everyone or just you – it's everyone. A large number of developer pages are missing apps all their apps. They're just empty wastelands of calming gray.

Not all pages are affected, but some big developers are included in the problems. Rovio Stars, Netflix, Dropbox, the NBA, Sony Online, Wacom, Tesla Motors, and YouTube are among those with blank developer pages.

rekey

A few weeks ago the "Master Key" APK verification vulnerability rocked the Android security landscape... then immediately stopped rocking it, once Google revealed that they had patched the vulnerability months ago. Still, that's little comfort to users who aren't on a brand-new 4.2 phone (or, you know, a Nexus device that gets real updates). CyanogenMod has responded by patching all of its official ROMs (twice), and now noted security firm Duo has teamed up with Northeastern University's SecLab to do the same for all Android rooted users, regardless of their device.

Zumba-Thumb

Zumba is a worldwide phenomenon. There's something about exercising while dancing that almost makes the laborious task of burning calories feel like, well, having fun. The illusion is so convincing that Zumba Fitness games has appeared for the Wii, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 - and they've sold quite well. Now Majesco Entertainment is bringing the experience to Android with Zumba Dance.

Don't bother looking for virtual controls, as Zumba Dance uses your tablet's camera to track a user's physical movement.

After giving us a sneak peek back at I/O in May, Google has finally rolled out the new version of web Play Store. The new UI looks totally killer, but there's a big shakeup in the features to go along with that new interface, and not all of it is good news. After the Maps update fiasco, it's starting to look like Google is pulling features it doesn't feel are being used by enough people.

Facebook-Thumb

Facebook's made a series of slip-ups in its transition to mobile. Their previous Facebook app, with its HTML5 underpinnings, was a slow and clunky mess. Facebook Home was launched to minimal interest, and the core app itself continues to stagnate. Through all of this, there has been one minor, but essential, change Facebook could implement to improve the experience for a sizable number of users. As of today, an update to the Facebook beta has finally done away with that unforgivable blemish - the legacy menu button is apparently no more!
