Zynga, creators of the ever-popular Words With Friends, have just made Hanging With Friends available to Android users in the U.S. following its global release. The game is Zynga's twist on the children's game Hang Man, but it is not as gruesome as it sounds. The game features "cute characters in perilous situations," by which I mean adorable, doe-eyed cartoons hanging on to balloons suspended in mid-air over a pool of lava.

The game uses the familiar tile interface and scoring system from Words With Friends, and adds fun features such as lifelines and instant replays to add interest.

Let's be honest: the Parrot AR.Drone is awesome. It's an awesome idea, it's an awesome design, and we had super high hopes for it. Unfortunately, one huge, massive, undeniable flaw means this bird will spend most of its life on the ground: battery life. It's that bad.

But before I, admittedly sadly, twist that dagger into the heart of this toy, let's go over what it does well - and why we're optimistic about Parrot's future smartphone-controlled vehicles. (Hint: mostly because this thing is so. Much. Fun.)

The Idea

Parrot's AR.Drone is a product we've covered in the past, even before its app was available for Android.

Next in our series of dialer reviews is a very popular replacement dialer called simply Dialer One, developed by Yermek Zhumagulov and available from the Android Market for free. It has a slick design with multiple theming options, and combines just about all the features you need into one screen, which seriously cuts down on time spent navigating around to find what you want.

At A Glance

I have a habit of talking a lot about the design of an app, but in this case there isn't much to say. The design of Dialer One is great. It's simple, clean, and interchangeable, including a black, white, gray, and 'wallpaper' theme (which makes the interface transparent, showing your own wallpaper behind it).

Gameloft, one of the biggest names in mobile gaming, is holding a back-to-school sale that cuts the prices of three of its most popular games for Android down to a manageable $0.99.

First in line for a price cut is Backstab HD, an action game with beautiful environments that's been compared to Uncharted and Assassin's Creed which had its debut in July.

Next is N.O.V.A. 2 HD, a sci-fi style FPS title first released back in June with highly detailed maps, multiplayer support, and a healthy amount of shooting action.

Asphalt 6: Adrenaline HD completes the list of price cuts, bringing single player and multiplayer racing action in a variety of worldwide locations and leagues to the palm of your hand.

Hexage has decided to update their popular retro-style Pacman-esque game EVAC (and EVAC HD) with some new levels and more importantly release it for free! Our esteemed editor reviewed the game some time back and he was particularly impressed by its "magical" soundtrack.

According to Droid Gamers, both versions of EVAC are completely free and contain no ads whatsoever. It seems as though Hexage has decided to adopt a freemium model whereby they will offer in-game purchases that can be used to pass difficult levels, extend the number of lives, and obtain longer lasting power-ups.

App developer Audodesk is no stranger to the development game, as it has brought many incredible and useful tools to our devices (and even more to PCs), such as SketchBook Pro and AutoCAD WS. This time around the AD team is back with a fun photo-editing app called Pixlr-O-Matic that lets you add various effects to any photo in your gallery.

The app features several different post-processing effects, such as color filters to change the tone of the image, various lighting effects to alter the vibe, and borders to finish it off.  Once you've reached the desired result, simple export the image back to the gallery or share it with friends through Facebook or imm.io.

voice-search

A little over a year ago Google introduced Voice Actions, which allowed Android users to perform a variety of tasks by simply issuing voice commands. Unfortunately, to the chagrin of non-English speakers, the app was only available in US English. Today Google is updating Voice Actions for users in the UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain with support for British English, French, Italian, German and Spanish.

To use Voice Actions simply say one of the following commands (spoken in any of the aforementioned languages):

  • send text to [contact] [message]
  • call [business]
  • call [contact]
  • go to [website]
  • navigate to [location/business name]
  • directions to [location/business name]
  • map of [location]

It is also possible to perform standard Google searches with Voice Actions.

We first told you about Serious Sam: Kamikaze Attack! back in July, and now, just two months later, it has officially landed in the Android Market.

Kamikaze Attack is a new take on a the cult classic action from the old school Serious Sam, putting you in the shoes of Sam's mortal enemy, The Headless Kamikaze. You'll blast, kick, and whatever else your way through 40 insane levels trying to rid the world of Sam once and for all.

Is it me, or is that iPhone overly-big? I guess it's possible that the guy just has really tiny hands. I'd like to see him hold a BK double cheeseburger.

Next in our hunt for the best replacement dialer app is Touchpal from the developers at CooTek, the same team behind Touchpal Keyboard and Search.

CooTek's dialer is extremely well-designed, unassuming, and easy to use. It combines most of the features I want in a dialer but doesn't attempt to overdo things with too many superfluous or redundant functions. Best of all, the dialer is totally free.

At A Glance

Immediately after installing Touchpal, I was impressed. The design is clean, simple, and unassuming. It combines the familiar tabbed browsing of Android's stock dialer with a dialpad/call log screen reminiscent of HTC's Sense dialer, in a way taking the best aspects of both and combining them into a simple, lightweight app.
