OrangePixel (the geniuses behind Meganoid and Stardash) released a new game to the Market today, bringing a retro-inspired side-scrolling shooter to Android with Neoteria.

In the words of OrangePixel, Neoteria is a shmup: a classic horizontal shoot em up. The game relies on a quick thumb, meaning players will need to have plenty of finger strength to shoot through the thousands of aliens and multiple, 80s-inspired environments Neoteria offers.

OrangePixel warns that "100% completion is not for the weak or casual gamer," noting that as players progress, they can unlock new pilots and difficulty modes, or discover hidden worlds.

To say that DLC is a growing problem would be an understatement. Of the last five games I've reviewed for this site, all of them have had some form of in-app purchases to expand the game or unlock content. Sometimes it's awful, sometimes it's not so bad, but all of them guarantee you only get most of a game. A new service called Pocket Change, however, wants to let game developers charge on a per-play basis.

Gamevil released another treat to the Android Market today, introducing Arel Wars – a game that promises "RPG action and defense strategy," and doesn't disappoint.

The game is kind of a cross between tower defense, real-time strategy, and RPG, packing the best of all three into a colorful, spritely world, taking players through 120 levels and across 8 unique maps. Before each match, players must choose their arsenal of powers and minions, which can be upgraded and reproduced throughout each round.

As the world of Android gaming grows larger, more and better talent is continually attracted to the platform. ROBOTA: Vengeance is a game currently under development by SiXiTS Studios based on a story by Doug Chiang. The team at SiXiTS is run by creative talent that's worked on graphic design and 3D animation for films like Star Wars Episodes I & II*, Terminator 2, War of the Worlds, Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban, and Disney's A Christmas Carol.

Claiming to have brought the first action/real-time strategy game to Android, the developers at Maya released Legendary Heroes to the Market yesterday. The game's overall structure and style are highly reminiscent of Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a popular mod for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos, meaning Legendary Heroes is almost sure to be a hit.

The game centers on "quick and intense matches," in which players control up to three heroes, fighting to destroy the enemy and their "source," while leveling up and gaining new abilities.

Begin with a Sonic the Hedgehog base. Add some splatter cinema, mix in a bit of parkour, garnish with an electric guitar and serve free. That's the recipe for Running Fred, a runner game starring a ginger down on his luck named Fred who's being chased by Death. Death's pretty cool about the whole killing Fred thing, though. He provides you a nice tutorial and even gives Fred the chance to escape.

Gamelion released the highly anticipated dual joystick shooting game Monster Shooter to the Android Market today. The game is a dynamic, quirky shooter that takes players to various alien planets, and gives them a wide arsenal of weapons, power ups, missions, and competitive rankings a la OpenFeint.

Monster Shooter puts players in the shoes of an alien named Dum Dum, whose cat has been stolen by an opposing alien race. Following the most reasonable course of action, Dum Dum ventures out with an impressive selection of weaponry, and a bloodthirst that will eliminate heaps of enemy aliens across a ton of levels.

Welcome to the weekly roundup of the best new Android applications, games, and live wallpapers that went live in the Market or were spotted by us in the previous 2 weeks or so.

This edition focuses only on new tablet apps or ones that added tablet support. Regular apps and games are coming soon.

As was the case with the previous tablet edition, tablet-only apps are a dying breed, as almost every app works on tablets to a degree and with ICS, this distinction is now even further washed out.
