Many games will try to wow users with amazing graphics or realistic art styles, however, this sometimes comes at the expense of a playable game. Battleheart is a new iOS port that manages to get the best of both worlds: a pleasing art style and an awesome control scheme for a premise that could have easily been tainted by complication.

The Game

Battleheart is a sword-and-sorcery RPG where the player is put in control of a four-hero squad that go off to achieve victory, glory and riches.

plants-vs-zombies

Are you ready for some Plants vs. Zombies? We know you've been waiting for it (I certainly have). Just a little bit longer: Plants vs. Zombies will be available on the Amazon App Store starting late this month (presumably May 30 or 31) for the low, low price of free. The app will be free on its debut-day (May 30), then for 2 weeks will be exclusively available on the Amazon App Store, in a deal similar to that which Rovio had with Amazon upon the release of Angry Birds Rio.

When Glu Mobile released Contract Killer this week on the Market, I remembered scenes from my youth when I lusted over Silent Scope, a sniper game that had a rather robust arcade cabinet. Besides being able to play the game with a full-sized sniper rifle, I was amazed by the game mechanics. Because you're firing from such a long distance away, how could you expect to be in any danger?

BBR THD

As promised, Playbox today brought the console racing experience to Tegra 2 devices with the release of Bang Bang Racing THD. This top-down racer, previously available on XBOX 360 and Playstation 3, is one of the soon to be numerous games optimized for multicore phones and tablets. With the added device power comes a level of physics that is yet unknown in mobile gaming.

Let's just hope all that new hotness is worth the relatively high cost.

Tower defense (TD) games seem to be plentiful on mobile platforms: their control scheme fits well with a touch surface, they don't require much user input from the player, and don't tend to be graphically intensive. If you're an Android user, you've probably at least tried a TD game before; GRave Defense HD looks to be the one that conquers them all.

No, that was not a typo in the title: GRave Defense is really spelled like that.

If you've beaten all 456930 levels of all 3 flavors of Angry Birds and can't wait for 30 more that Rovio teased us with, take a deep breath and go in for the kill - the update to Rio just went live in the Amazon Market.

Beach Volley, the 3rd Rio stage, following the Smugglers' Den and Jungle Escape, brings 30 more levels full of birds (including Blu and Jewel tied at the feet), monkeys, and you guessed it - beach balls.

One thing I remember about flipping through Nintendo Power magazine in my childhood is the Shadowrun SNES game. Based off a popular pen-and-paper RPG, Shadowrun is set in a dystopian future where humans can splice themselves with technology to gain new powers. The player wades through a maze of lies, deceit and all-around scummy people to meet their goals, whatever that may be.

The reason I bring Shadowrun up in a review about Cyberlords is that the atmosphere feels stunningly similar.

If you just can't get enough first-person-shooter action in your life, then you'll be glad to know that Gameloft released a port of its popular iOS title Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus in the Android Market this morning. Up until now, this game was available exclusively through Gameloft's website, so hopefully this means that we'll start to see more GL titles hit the Android Market moving forward.

This game itself looks like it really lives up to all of the FPS goodness that we've all come to expect from modern games - fast gameplay, multiplayer, and all of the headshots that you can handle.

Game ports fall into this weird category where developers have both an easy and difficult job in front of them. On one hand, the game can easily market itself on the nostalgia or hype of the product. On the other, however, they must successfully capture the feel of the original, which can be difficult.

The original Majesty is a bit of a cult hit in PC Gaming circles. You played as the traditional "overseer" of a kingdom and looked to vanquish whatever evil had set up shop within your borders.
