The Men Who Wear Many Hats may have struck undead gold with their debut entry into Google's Play Store. Organ Trail is pretty much what it sounds like – a take on the classic nostalgia-fest that is the Oregon Trail, but with zombies, bandits, and an upgradeable station wagon. The game, which started on the web, hit Android recently, delivering the same epic experience players of the original would expect.
If you've got a hankering for a good top-down turn-based RPG, Shadowrun Online will have you covered... eventually. The developers have been promoting a Kickstarter to fund the development of their game, and it has passed its goal of $500,000. That means Shadowrun Online will be coming to Android, among other platforms, in May 2013. Yes, that's quite a wait, but now there is some sweet gameplay footage to tide you over.
EA just announced at a GamesCon press conference that it will be bringing the popular Origin game store to Android (along with Facebook, Mac, and Smart TVs). For the unaware, Origin is basically EA's answer to Steam as a go-to place to purchase and download games.
At this point there are no other details, but it's worth noting the Mac version has a tentative release timeframe of February 2013. Perhaps we'll see the Android version around that time, too (but I wouldn't count on it).
If you've ever felt like puzzle games are just too easy, have I ever got the game for you. Quantro follows a familiar gaming trope pioneered by Tetris decades ago. Blocks fall from the top of the screen and you line them up into rows to clear them. Easy, right? Quantro makes it interesting by confronting you with two overlapping games simultaneously.
The two games are color-coded, with the red blocks in front and the blue ones behind.
When I was younger, Mike Tyson's Punch Out for the old-school Nintendo was one of my favorite games. It was challenging, crazy-fun, and had a fat king with no nose. Fast-forward many years, and the classic title returned with some familiar faces on the Wii, and it was just as much fun as the original.
One of the best things about Punch Out was (and still is) its whimsical style; along those same lines is a new game from Gamevil called Punch Hero.
It's a good time to be an Android gamer - three respectable game developers have just slashed the prices of their games to less than $1 (up to 85% off) in a wild summer sale.
First up, Gameloft's 3D MMORPG Order & Chaos has seen its price reduced to $0.99. This is a pretty significant sale considering it usually costs $6.99, and it seems like a viable option for MMORPG fans, as evidenced by its current 4.25-star rating on the Play Store.
You can always rely on Gamevil to create engaging little games that will eat up your free time. In that spirit, Gamevil has released a new game on Google Play called Freekick Battle. This title has easy-to-master controls and a single goal: to err... score goals. All that other soccer stuff is out the window, though. All you're doing here is taking free kicks. It's just you and the defenders.
The controls are very simple, so after a few minutes you'll get the hang of it.
Space-inspired physics games have been given a boost thanks to Angry Birds Space. If you're looking for something with a little more drama and a little less pig, then New Orbit might be right down your gravity well. The 99¢ game from rookie developer Blackish combines Asteroids-style navigation, gravity-driven physics and an ambitious if not overly promising story. On that note, the full title is "NEW ORBIT: Episode 1," so there's probably more on the table.
Apparently simventure is quickly becoming its own genre. Today's latest entry into this crossover category is Kingdoms & Lords from Gameloft, which has finally hit release after being announced back in June. Part of the game will take place in a simulated kingdom (spoilers, I know). You'll spend your time managing your economy "on a daily basis", as the description on the Play Store is quick to point out. Hopefully this won't be the Farmville-ian style where, if you cease to play for a few hours, your kingdom dies.
