[Review] Naval Clash Blows The Original 'Battleship' Out Of The Water, Brings Smooth Multiplayer Gameplay to Android

 In my youth, one of the games I hated most was Battleship - it was simply too slow for my liking. Spending what seemed like ages trying to seek out hits in a sea of misses only served to bore me out of my mind.

However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Naval Clash eliminated most of my hate towards the game. At its core, it's a rendition of Battleship that allows you to play against a CPU, friends over Bluetooth, or other players over Naval Battle's multiplayer service. Following the likes of Words With Friends, Naval Clash takes an old formula that "everyone" likes and makes it available on a mobile platform.

[New Game Review] Stardunk Brings Some Polish To Side-View Basketball Games

Gaming on Android has been accelerating at the same mind-numbing speed as Android hardware, and we have quickly gone from having a limited number of decent titles to having more good games than we can track. In some cases, these games stand out for their amazing new gameplay; in others, they stand out for their high level of polish. Stardunk is one of the latter.

There have been several Android games that let you play a quick game of basketball, essentially just choosing an angle and power, and letting the ball fly. Stardunk is that plus multiplayer competitiveness and customization with a healthy dose of polish.

[Update: It's In The Market Now, Too] Angry Birds Rio Carnival Update Now Available On Amazon Appstore - Adds 15 New Levels

Surprise, surprise - Rovio's has issued the next major content update to Angry Birds Rio early! The Carnival update is now available on the Amazon Appstore (unfortunately that's the only place you can get it for now).

Here's the basic changelog:

  • 15 levels in new world named Carnival Upheaval
  • Blue, the Macaw, can now be used alone.
  • The new hidden fruits are papaya (thanks to everyone who helped us figure this out)

Update: This update is in the Android Market now, too.

Ah, Angry Birds... it seems like it was only yesterday that the beta version of AB landed in the Android Market. Those crazy birds have come so far in such a short amount of time, and now they're back again with the newest update to the series entitled Mine and Dine. We already showed you the teaser trailer for this update a little over a week ago, but it never hurts to see it again, so here it is:

This update takes to the underground to bring 15 all-new levels of bird-slinging action to your device. The update is live in the Android Market now - so go ahead and grab it.

[Review] Doodle God Lets You Flex Your Omnipotence, Could Probably Have Used More Time In The Garden

The Game

 When distilled down to its base values, Doodle God is a large logic puzzle based on matching. You're given four elements (earth, air, water, fire) at the start of the game and can combine them to make things. Combining fire and air gets you steam, fire with water alcohol (firewater, har har), and many others.

From there, you can use the products of your matching to make other things, which is where the game gets most of its depth. There are over 200 different elements to find, and more being added all the time. This is the major selling point of the game, touting the ability to make fantastical creatures, like the front end of an airplane and the back end of a horse.

[New App Review] Pax Britannica Gives Us One-Button, Competitive Strategy

Pax Britannica for Android is a port of the open-source game of the same name. Marketed as "the one button strategy game," Pax lives up to its word. Players take control of an underwater factory ship that is locked in combat with another ship of similar function.

Each ship it outfitted with a dial which allows it to spawn individual ships. This is accomplished by a player pressing and holding their finger on their assigned section of the screen: the needle on the dial unwinds clockwise, and each quadrant of the dial spawns a different ship. The ships fight using artificial intelligence, and each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

Rovio Mobile Adding 'Magic' Feature To Angry Birds Later This Year, Using NFC To Share And Add New Gameplay Elements

Just when you thought you were sick and tired of Angry Birds news (I certainly was), Rovio Mobile has unveiled an intriguing new spin on the classic throw-the-birds-at-the-pigs gameplay, and it involves the much-ballyhooed NFC chip found in the Nexus S.

It's not available just yet, but it appears that in future releases of Angry Birds, you'll be able to utilize a previously Nokia-exclusive feature called "Magic." Simply bump your phone against a friend's to unlock new levels or share existing gameplay elements.

Better yet, Magic will work with your phone's GPS chip so that when you travel to a real-world location and touch your phone to an NFC tag, new gameplay features will be unlocked.
