sitegeist

If you're like me, you like to know things about your location. Sure, most of the crap you want to know is trivial, but it's still fun -- and that's basically the entire idea behind a very cool new app called Sitegeist. In a nutshell, this app gives you all sorts of different info about your current location, including:

  • Average age and sex of the town's residents
  • Average number of children per household
  • Average income and political contributions
  • Weather - current conditions, average temps, record temps
  • Fun things to do
  • Median age of homes, median home value, and average rent
  • ...and more

Not only does the app provide some really useful information, but it looks damn good doing it.

Quick quiz: can you name how many different beers you've had in the last week, their country of origin, and their brew style? Do you know what beer to recommend with barbeque shrimp? Have you ever successfully used the word "mouthfeel" in a sentence? Then Beer Citizen is for you. It follows the basic formula for enthusiast "social" apps (in other words, just like BeerAdvocate) but presents all that information in a mobile-friendly format that's got more taste and is less filling.

Today, the UK's public broadcasting service, the BBC, upgraded its mobile app for Android. The update brings improvements to the UI to bring the interface a bit more in line with Android's Holo guidelines. The new version also adds support for Jelly Bean 4.2, improved video streaming over WiFi, and a new content channel.

Google's Calendar app for Android just received an update, to version 201212060 (we're guessing the version numbers are date codes or something). The update adds a few new things.

First, you can now call a number or go to a location for an event directly from the notification for that event, as shown in the screenshots below. We figure this is just another example of Google's apps catching up with Android's rich notifications, introduced in 4.1.

We've known it's coming for a while and, per today's announcement, it will finally be here soon: Facebook's revamp of its Android app that will bring a proper, native UI as opposed to the mostly HTML5-based web viewer that's been powering the application for so long. The result is photos, the news feed, and timelines will load at least twice as fast, according to the company.

The company touts speed as the big improvement here, and it's sorely needed.

magazines

Google Magazines has to be one of my favorite services from Big G. I've always been a big fan of magazines in general - they just provide a different experience to the traditional blog format (oh how the tables have turned, right?). Now, all our friends across the pond can begin enjoying this fantastic service, as well.

Officially announced last night by Google UK, the service is now available in the Play Store for UK residents.

When AudioGalaxy comes to mind, I think of the music download service from back in the day that was anything but legit. Of course, the service did turn itself around and get on the right side of the law after a bit, and has since become a fairly popular music streaming service with internet radio. Looks like the AG days are quickly coming to an end, though, as the company was just purchased by Dropbox.

For the past 12 years, Google has put together a list of the top searches encompassing each respective year. The list is called Zeitgeist, and it really embodies what was popular through each year - everything from most searched celebrities, to trending songs, apparel brands, and so much more. If you want to see what 2012 was all about, wrapped up in a nice package - Zeitgeist 2012 is the place to do it.

Google Currents is not the only Android app the company updated today as many first-party apps saw relatively minor updates through the Play Store this afternoon. Basically, the next time you check your app list be prepared to wait on those updates to download.

If you are one of the few still using a Google TV device, the PrimeTime and TV Search apps have been updated. PrimeTime comes with bugfixes and faster access to the channel guide.
