I'll admit, I'm a Telegram newbie. I installed the app once, but kept finding myself drawn back to the standard Messenger (SMS) app. However, with the update to Telegram 3.9, I might get more use out of this popular (and secure) messenger app. You can finally edit messages, and it's easier to mention people regardless of whether or not they have a username. Have you ever wanted to stream the videos you see on Facebook directly to your television? No? Well who could blame you, since most of them are either inane junk from your high school friends or comedy videos blatantly stolen from YouTube and then stickered to hell like a race car in a fire sale. But if for some awful reason you DO want to stream videos from Facebook to Chromecast, such as trying to get rid of all of your roommates really quickly, you'll soon be able to do so. Probably. As we reported yesterday, Google recently opened up the Google Dialer app to virtually all phones running Marshmallow. Great! Everyone was happy for a few hours, and then the other shoe dropped. It turns out this was not intentional on Google's part, and the Play Store listing no longer allows installing on non-Nexus phones. What's more, sideloading is blocked in the latest build. Read More
Dear international Android Police readers: thank you. Our staff is relatively small, so we can only be on the ground (so to speak) in a handful of countries... most of which are the US. So when a bunch of you from one particular place start telling us that something big is happening, we listen. The latest one is Google Now On Tap, the contextual screen-based search tool, which appears to be rolling out in Brazil right now. If you're in the country (and happen to be running Android M), give it a shot.
Update: Turns out Google Now on Tap is now enabled for the Portuguese locale rather than specific countries. Read More
If you've been reading AP in the last 24 hours, you probably saw our hands-on post with YouTube's new Share tab - it's actually very neat. But if you wanted to see and hear the new share tab and chat features explained, just check out our YouTube video, in which we explain YouTube, on YouTube, for you. I'll let Mark take it away. The Google dialer is what ships on all Nexus phones, but OEMs usually create their own vastly different dialer app. Beginning with the v2.05 update, you can install Google's version on most other phones too. This update rolled out a few weeks ago, but it seems that people are still just noticing, so let's get this all out in the open. Read More
There comes a moment when you're making a recording where you wish you could zoom in. Well, you can, and now Snapchat has made that something that only requires one hand. Read More
Apparently if you call an emergency number from your Android device, you can't block calls for the next 48 hours.
We don't know why this is the case, though we imagine it may be to prevent you from blocking your local police department or other emergency personnel. Read More
Airside's Mobile Passport app offers a way to speed up the process of re-entering the US after traveling abroad. You send Customs and Border Protection your passport and customs information via your Android device. Then you get to skip the main line and zip through the dedicated Mobile Passport one instead.
In order to experience this convenience, you must use Mobile Passport in one of the supported airports. Originally, that was Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport. Gradually the app made its way to others. Recently two more made the list. Read More
Many YouTube Red subscribers aren't making use of the dedicated YouTube Music app yet, but it remains one of the somewhat unique perks of the program. Since launch, the app hasn't seen all that many changes, but updates have been coming out pretty regularly with little tweaks and adjustments. Last week, an unexpected jump from v1.20 to v1.25 suggested some big changes were afoot. A teardown didn't reveal anything of substance – just some minor visual tweaks – but a new changelog has come out since the release of v1.26 this week, and gives us something a little more meaningful.
- New: Listen to your YouTube playlists in the YouTube Music app!
