If you're in Twitter's Android beta program, better grab the nearest Android device and check for updates. The official Twitter client has been updated with a completely new interface, and it's not the one leaked at the Samsung IFA event. This version has Android-style tabs, in-line media previews, hamburger navigation, and a proper action bar.
Another month, another incredible showing of new apps in the Play Store. It's taken us a while to narrow down the selections this time, but we promise they're worth the wait. Out of all the new apps we saw last month, we've compiled a short list of just five of our favorites, plus some runners up that didn't quite make the cut but are still worth checking out.
Without further ado, let's get started.
The developer behind some of the best extensions to the popular Tasker automation app has released another plugin into the Play Store, one that expands on how users can launch and access apps. AutoLaunch offers two primary functions: the ability to dynamically launch apps and the option to pull up app queries. You can head over to the plugin's website for instructions on how to get set up, but first, see the new functionality in action in the video below.
Google started a staged update to Google Drive earlier today with version 1.2.352.9 and a completely useless changelog that just said "Bug fixes and other improvements."
As it turns out, these fixes and improvements are actually kind of significant compared to the previous version 220.127.116.11. In this post, I will show you what's really new in Drive v1.2.352.9.
Since the rollout is staged, some of you may not see the update in the Play Store yet - in that case, you can find manual APK download links at the bottom of this post.
Once a good soap opera sinks its teeth in, the best days of our lives are those where we don't miss an episode. I would turn down a job at a general hospital if it meant I wouldn't have to miss today's episode. These stories serve as a guiding light that get me through each day as the world turns. The ability to take these shows with me would be a godsend, and even though I don't speak Spanish, I get how exciting it is to see NBC launch another Telemundo app into the Play Store that's aimed specifically at novelas and TV shows.
There are more than a few note-taking apps on the Play Store, including established veteran Evernote and Google's own Keep. But Automattic, the company formed by WordPress creator Matt Mullenweg, thinks you'll be interested in at least one more. After a considerable period of iOS exclusivity, Simplenote is now available on the Google Play Store. It's free to download and use.
Simplenote hits all the check marks for a new notation app: syncing across devices and the service website, a to do list as well as more general notes, searching through previous notes, and tags for a better filing system.
This is the app roundup. The game roundup from last week can be found here.
A Google Play Music update v5.2 just popped up in the Play Store, though it's being slowly rolled out, as is the case with many big Google apps nowadays. The previous version is 5.1, and indeed I'm seeing quite a few changes inside that would warrant a point release.
Update 9/10/13 4:00pm PT: the official changelog has been posted:
The Roku app is great for controlling a Roku set-top box, but that's what you have a remote for, right? The app previously included audio and picture streaming from Android devices, but now it goes one step further. The new update allows Android devices to stream video directly to the player over WiFi.
The 'Play on Roku' tab in the interface has a new entry for videos, which should pull up all the compatible videos on your device organized by folder.
