Google is quietly rolling out an update to YouTube for Android with version 5.2.27 on top of the current version 5.1.10. If you're eager to install it right now, we have some download links towards the end of the post.

What’s new?

While 5.2.27 does have a whole bunch of changes under-the-hood which are mostly related to the upcoming offline download support, there are, surprisingly, no UI tweaks and new features that you can dive into right now.

Spiderfly Studios has a knack for developing apps that extend Android's functionality in the least obtrusive way possible. Their most popular app thus far, Glowfly, offers holo-friendly SMS popup notifications with support for images and sending quick replies. Their latest offering, Stormfly, offers HD wallpapers that change as the weather does. It's not an original concept by any means, but the studio has managed to throw together an app that does this in the most integrated way possible, and they do so without putting much of a strain on bandwidth.

Google Maps is a fine tool if you need to find your way around, but Google also has a way to create custom maps called Map Engine. The service is getting a mobile upgrade today with the release of the Map Engine app. This will allow users to view and share custom maps on Android devices. It even comes with some neat samples.

The Map Engine Lite web service is available to everyone and has a fairly robust set of tools.

Last week, we published the first look at Play Store 4.4, which most notably replaced the menu-accessible navigation buttons with a new slide-out UI. An APK teardown of this update also yielded the news of Google Play Newsstand and a special message to the AP teardown team that we humbly enjoyed quite a bit. Today, this update is live.

Unfortunately, the rumor of a more drastic card-heavy UI update hasn't panned out just yet, but we'll continue looking out for it in future Play Store updates.

Power-Thumb

The latest gaming rigs are powerful enough to run circles around the upcoming generation of gaming consoles, but unless a PC gamer is willing to run a title in windowed-mode, invest in a second display, or become an alt-tab ninja, getting absorbed in a game can mean tuning everything else out. Keyboard and mouse developer ROCCAT's Power-Grid app offers gamers a way to stay immersed with much less effort. This free offering turns your Android device into a customizable remote for your PC, giving you the means to monitor system stats, play music, follow social media, and more without having to interrupt the game.

After a number of delays and an untold number of fake spam apps, BBM for Android is about to really arrive in Google Play. This will mark the first time Blackberry's premier messaging service has been available on a non-Blackberry device. You'll be able to download the app today, but you might not be able to actually use it.

BBM was leaked a few weeks back and the flood of users caused all manner of server issues for the company.

The week is getting underway and maybe that's a bummer for you. Don't worry, though. There are some deals on apps and games that are sure to make you feel better. What else do you really need to be happy in life? Be honest, pretty much just app sales, right?

A lot of Android devices have dedicated buttons to bring up the multitasking list, but Switchr may offer an even faster way to jump between running apps. This utility debuted on XDA recently as a beta, but now it has come to Google Play in both free and paid forms.

Switchr, like some similar apps, creates an active swipe zone on the edge of the screen. Swipe in through that area, and you trigger the app switching interface.

Update: Vic Gundotra, Google's SVP of Engineering, had this to say after posting on Google+ about the new Voice update:

Guys, don't worry. We have massive investment in Android. I promise you will be happy soon. Don't get upset because we show some love to Google users who use iOS. There are a lot of them. And they are good people :-)

So chill out: it looks like VOIP for Voice is coming to Android sooner or later.
