A new version of Android comes out, AOSP updates, OEMs adapt it to a myriad of devices, and carriers test the updates. <em>That</em> process. How long does it take?</p>
<p>It's a tough question to answer, mostly because Google doesn't provide data like that. <a href="http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html">The official site</a> shows a 6 month version history, and that's it. Anyone looking for a decent amount of data is out of luck. There’s no way to view the long journey older Android versions have taken, and no way to see the bigger picture of how the update process eventually works out.<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/04/27/the-big-android-chart-a-definitive-history-of-android-version-adoption/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post? <div class='note'><div class='notetip'>Earlier this month, I <a href="http://code.google.com/p/adt-addons/issues/detail?id=17" target="_blank">added a request for Android 4.0</a> source to be added to the plugin, and I'm pleased to report that the plugin maintainer just added it to the latest version.
<p>Honeycomb sources are being worked on.</p>
<p><strong>Note</strong>: If you already have the plugin installed, you'll need to re-install for this addition to show up.</p></div></div>
<p>Developers should understand what I'm talking about, but for the rest of you - this priceless little addition to our development process means whenever we want to see just what exactly Android is doing at a certain point in our programs, we can actually <em>take a peek</em>.<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/12/22/gold-for-android-developers-add-aosp-source-code-to-eclipse-with-the-android-sources-plugin/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post? <p>Google <a href="http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html" rel="nofollow">has released</a> the latest of its monthly Android version distribution charts, and for the first time Android 2.3 Gingerbread is present on over half of all Android devices. A milestone, to be sure.</p>
<p>We also get a look at the end success rate of Honeycomb (a tablet-only version of Android), which achieved a mere 2.5% piece of the Android pie since the first Honeycomb device release back in February. Android 1.5 and 1.6 (Cupcake and Donut) have continued their march toward extinction, commanding only 2.1% of the Android population total. Android 2.2 has remained relatively steady at 35%, but is clearly on the downtrend.<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/12/01/gingerbread-now-running-on-50-of-android-phones-just-in-time-for-ice-cream-sandwich/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post? <p>Oh, Android. How far you've come since the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_Dream" rel="nofollow">days of the G1</a>. Actually, tomorrow, October 22nd, will mark <strong>3 years to the day</strong> that Android has been available on consumer handsets in the United States, and the G1 on T-Mobile was <em>concepción.</em></p>
<p>With Ice Cream Sandwich finally revealed, Android has gone through its seventh major iteration. How has Android changed? What better way to illustrate Android's evolution than its home screen, the hub of user interaction. Here's a look at the face of Android over the last 3 years.</p>

<p>In this line of work, I get the chance to write about things that are new and exciting. Other times, however, that's just not the case. There are times when writing about certain subjects just makes me sad... and this is one of those times. Sure, it may be good news in a sense, but the fact that I am sitting here, on May 31, 2011, reporting an update to Android 2.1... well, that's just disappointing. Regardless of that, though, here are the deetz on the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android 2.1 update.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2011-05-31-11h47_58.png" target="_blank"><img style="display: inline" title="2011-05-31 11h47_58" alt="2011-05-31 11h47_58" src="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/2011-05-31-11h47_58_thumb.png" width="668" height="432" /></a></p>
<p>First off, unlike most modern-day updates, this one does not come over the air - you'll have to use Sony Ericsson's PC Companion software for Windows (you can get it <a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/update/?lc=en&#038;cc=us" target="_blank">here</a>).<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/05/31/att-sony-ericsson-x10-android-2-1-update-is-available-now-welcome-to-two-years-ago/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post? This is by no means a power house, though, with a 600MHz processor, 168MB of RAM, a 3.2 megapixel camera, and a 3&#34; 320x480 screen; clearly, this phone is aimed at the budget market.</p>
<p>This device will run Android 2.1 and the same version of Timescape as the X10 mini, with some tweaks to the Mediascape music interface to give users the Walkman experience. To make sure you enjoy blasting some tunes on the W8, Sony is going to sweeten the deal for anyone picking up this phone with a set of <a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/products/accessories/overview/mh410?cc=il&#038;lc=en">premium earbuds</a>.<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/04/21/sony-ericssons-indonesian-office-announces-the-w8-first-android-walkman-phone/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post? <p>Sony Ericsson <a href="http://androidcommunity.com/no-android-updates-for-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-beyond-2-1-20110106/">has confirmed</a> that it will not be updating its Xperia X10 line of smartphones to Android 2.2 Froyo. So, owners of the Xperia X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro will be stuck on Android 2.1 Éclair for the foreseeable future. However, Sony Ericsson has promised to provide some minor software updates, with features such as multitouch, later this year.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/xperia-x101.jpg"><img alt="xperia x10" src="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/xperia-x10_thumb1.jpg" width="521" height="325" /></a></p>
<p>If you were looking for another reason to buy Google's Nexus S, here it is. No matter what promises hardware manufacturers make, the users are at their mercy when it comes to software upgrades. Still if you are keen on running the latest version of Android on your Xperia X10 there are a number of custom ROMs available, just search the <a href="http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=617">XDA-Developers forum</a>.<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/01/06/sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-line-will-not-receive-android-2-2-froyo-update/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post? <p>As per usual, Google has updated their Android Platform Version Chart, which gives us a clear indication of how many devices are running each version of Android, based on Market usage. The results won't shock anybody, but they do say good things about the current state of fragmentation in Android. Froyo continues it dominance, taking over half of the chart, while Android 2.1 still remains strong with 35%, likely due in large part to the massive number of Galaxy S phones still running it. Our obsolete friends, Cupcake and Donut, continue to fall into obscurity, although devices running them are unlikely to be updated.<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/01/05/android-platform-version-chart-updated-froyo-dominates-clair-still-strong-cupcake-and-donut-on-the-way-out/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post? <p align="left">If you love devouring Android stats, Google's <a href="http://developer.android.com/resources/dashboard/platform-versions.html">Android Platform Versions sub-site</a>, which is updated about once a month, just got refreshed with the latest batch of data. Last month, Froyo ate up some 36% of the pie, while Éclair was found to be running on about 41% of devices, with the remaining 23% being taken up by Cupcake and Donut.</p>
<p align="center"><a href="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/android-versions-chart-550x232.png"><img style="display: inline" title="android-versions-chart-550x232" alt="android-versions-chart-550x232" src="http://cdn.androidpolice.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/android-versions-chart-550x232_thumb.png" width="550" height="232" /></a></p>
<p align="left">As you can see for yourself in the graph above, this month was quite a turn-around - Froyo (at 43.4%) finally stole the throne from Éclair, which was left with 39.6%. As for 1.5 (Cupcake) and 1.6 (Donut), they each gobbled up 6.3% and 10.6%, respectively.<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/12/01/android-platform-version-stats-updated-again-froyo-now-dominant/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post? <p align="left">Despite the fact that Gingerbread is set to be released in the <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/11/15/eric-schmidt-at-web-2-0-summit-gingerbread-coming-in-the-next-few-weeks-will-support-nfc-aim-for-location-and-payment-processing/">next few weeks</a>, <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/topics/phones-devices/sony-ericsson/xperia-x10/">some of us</a> are still waiting for an update to a version of Android two decimal places behind - Android 2.1, aka Éclair. Such is life for owners of AT&#38;T's Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 who, after <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/10/31/android-2-1-now-rolling-out-for-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-x10-mini-x10-mini-pro/">jealously watching as Scandinavian X10 owners received the update on Halloween night</a>, are being told that 2.1 has been delayed yet again for their devices. This time, SE is blaming &#34;especially rigorous&#34; testing as the cause of the procrastination, stating that there are &#34;technical requirements that must be met&#34; in the US that are apparently not an issue in other countries.<div class=clear></div> <a href="http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/11/24/android-2-1-update-for-atts-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-delayed-yet-again/" class="read_more"><div class=excerpt-end><img src=http://www.androidpolice.com/wp-content/themes/ap1/images/read_on.png /></div></a></p><div style='clear: both'><b>Done With This Post?
