T-Mobile Doubling HSPA+ Speeds In Eleven Markets, Expanding HSPA+ 21 In Nine Others

Hot on the heels of Verizon's announcement of new LTE markets, T-Mobile just sent out a PR  detailing some network expansion of its own. Effective today, T-Mo has doubled the speed of its HSPA+ 4G network in eleven markets:

  • Bend, Medford, and Corvallis, OR
  • Benton Harbor, MI
  • Bloomington, Champaign-Urbana and Springfield, IL
  • Columbus, GA
  • Santa Barbara, CA
  • State College, PA
  • Yuba City, CA

On top of the that expansion, it will also be turning on HSPA+ 21 in nine additional markets, including:

  • Corvallis, OR
  • Decatur and Peoria, IL
  • Evansville, IN
  • Holland and Kalamazoo, MI
  • Santa Barbara CA
  • State College, PA
  • Yuba City, CA

If you're in one of the aforementioned areas, grab your phone and run a speed test - you may just be walking in a 4G wonderland.

Verizon Wireless Reminds Us That It Will Light Up 14 New Cities With 4G LTE, Expand In 4 Markets On November 17th

If you've been waiting for Big Red to show spread the LTE love in your area, your time may come tomorrow. VZW announced fourteen new LTE markets last month, along with plans for expansion in four existing markets, and it's all set to flip the switch tomorrow, November 17th.  Here's the list one more time:

  • Little Rock, AR
  • Savannah, GA
  • Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, IA
  • Lexington, KY
  • Starkville, MS
  • Kansas City and Springfield/Branson, MO
  • Lincoln, NE
  • Orange County, NY
  • Greater Providence, RI

Verizon Offering Double Data Package On LTE Phones Beginning November 8th

Here's a tidbit of good news for those looking to pick up a new 4G LTE device on Verizon this month -- be it the Droid RAZR, HTC Rezound, Galaxy Nexus (granted that it actually comes out this month), or even an existing LTE handset. Starting tomorrow, November 8th, Big Red will be doubling the data for all new or existing customers who re-sign their two year agreement with an LTE phone.

So, instead of being stuck with 2GB of data, you'll have 4GB to play with before overage charges kick in. Sure, it's still not unlimited, but for anyone forced onto a tiered data plan, 4GB is far better than 2GB.  If you're already on a tiered plan and have a 4G device, don't fret -- simply login to your My Verizon account and you'll be able to update your plan to the new 4GB allowance.

Oh, the DROID RAZR - the very name RAZR brings back memories of the turn of the century (we can say that now, right?) - flip phones and cheap, unlimited data. Those were the good 'ol days. But let's talk about the here and now, Motorola's latest Android phone is the company's most ambitious handset to date, and the general consensus? It's good, but... [insert complaint about battery life or width / Galaxy Nexus is coming comment here.]

In all seriousness, one great thing about rounding up a number of reviews in one place is finding out what numerous sources agree upon about a particular piece of hardware, and more interestingly, what they don't.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 Or 10.1 LTE Coming To AT&T At Some Point According To FCC Filing

We try to avoid excessive posts about FCC filings that may or may not be for Android goodies coming to the US, but this one was a dead giveaway for AT&T. Just take a look:

The guys over at WirelessGoodness dug up this picture from a recent FCC filing, and it clearly shows the device is either a Tab 10.1 or 8.9, and that it has the official AT&T 4G LTE logo. Hard to call that a "rumor." It seems likely that AT&T will announce the device before the holiday season.

What I Learned About Sprint's Past And Current Data Problems As Well As Future Upgrade Plans After Reaching Out To CEO Dan Hesse

Sprint has network problems. Major problems. And they've gotten a lot worse lately. Really, really bad. Not all areas are affected - and in fact some have improved already, but more and more areas are getting so bad that Sprint's 3G data is completely unusable there, especially since the introduction of the iPhone. Troubleshooting and update my phone's "profile" and PRL didn't help, as evident from the screenshot #2 you see below.

Earlier this week I contacted Sprint's customer service, followed by an email to an executive and CEO Dan Hesse himself (or whoever fields his emails). The former told me there was a tower outage in my area, and a fix was incoming the next day (as you've guessed nothing is fixed as of today, 5 days later).

Sprint Plans To Deploy LTE-Advanced In The First Half of 2013, Has Plans For Voice Over LTE, Says Iyad Tarazi

There's been a lot of buzz over Sprint's LTE plans lately, but the company's vice president of network development and engineering, Iyad Tarazi has just added more fuel to the fire, indicating that Sprint plans to deploy LTE-Advanced in a 10x10 configuration by the first half of 2013, using its 800MHz spectrum, offering download speeds of around 12-15 MB/s.

Meanwhile, Sprint's deployment of LTE on their 1900MHz spectrum is still on track for commercial launch by mid-2012. By the end of 2013, the company plans on having LTE coverage more expansive than their current CDMA network, covering 250-277 million POPs.

Tarazi also indicated plans to move voice service from CDMA 1x to LTE, launching the first VoLTE devices in the first quarter of 2013.

Update: Unfortunately, Verizon pulled the ads. When we asked them why, their official response was: "The ads were pulled because some of the professional service agreements have expired."

Bummer.

It's no secret that Verizon's LTE network is the fastest and largest mobile data network in the U.S. (can't say it's the most reliable though), but to make sure every Tom, Dick, and Harry knows about this, the company has rolled out a batch of LTE commercials featuring slogans such as "Instant Results," "Just Like That," "What You Want. Now," and "It's That Fast."

And what do you know - they're actually quite funny.

Verizon 4G LTE Down, Call Centers Swamped - No ETA On Repairs

Twitter is absolutely abuzz about Verizon's LTE network at the moment, but not because it's blazingly fast or convenient for on-the-go web browsing. No, Twitter is currently blowing up because it seems that 4G is down for most (if not all) VZW subscribers. For many 4G users, 3G is also having issues, likely a side-effect caused by Verizon's 4G devices. Adding to the flood of tweets, reader J Weissman has also confirmed the outage, tipping us just moments ago.

Known Verizon insider black_man_x has chimed in too, adding that Verizon's call centers are swamped at the moment.

This echoes a thread on Reddit by Vzw_insider, who also explains that Verizon currently has no ETA for repair completion.
