N64oid Demoed On Sony Ericsson Xperia Play - Awesome Meets Nostalgic

Ever reminisce about those heady, hazy days of the mid-90s when you and your mates would gather around a Nintendo N64 console for a communal session of Mario Kart, Golden Eye, or Starfox?

Well those days are back… if you can get ahold of a Sony Ericsson Xperia Play, dubbed the PlayStation phone, and equip it with N64oid (which was recently taken down from the Market, but you can always find links floating around).

OK. So, the emulator does not yet support network multiplayer games, and the the four-player mayhem for which the N64 was famed is missing, but the sheer retro joy of N64 gaming is unsurpassed -  if you don’t mind playing on a 4” screen rather than your 50” plasma.

[Video] Three More Quirky (And Thumb-Free) Xperia Play Promos Arrive

There are three new promo spots out for the Xperia Play, but have no fear - there are no thumbs in any of these (aside from the ones that would normally be attached to a human hand that is). That doesn't mean these commercials are any more - shall we say - traditional though, as Sony Ericsson has now turned to actress Kristen Schaal (from Flight of the Conchords and Dinner For Schmucks) to promote the gaming abilities of the upcoming "PlayStation Phone" with a quirkiness and dark humor that will likely appeal to many Android fans.

I have to admire a company for taking the unconventional route with an ad campaign.

"The Donor" - Sony Ericsson's New Xperia Play Commercial Explains The Missing Thumbs, Creepiness Included

Remember the first Xperia Play commercial that aired during Super Bowl? The one with Andy getting human thumbs attached to his green hands so he can play games? Yeah, the one that sent creepy chills down so many kids' spines (although, personally, I absolutely loved it).

Have you ever wondered where the thumbs came from? Was it some homeless person they had to kill or do thumbs grow on trees around where Sony Ericsson execs live? Turns out, neither. I won't spoil it for you, but this video SE released clarifies it perfectly, in the same creepy, Saw-like manner as before.

Sony Ericsson Announces PlayStation Certified Xperia Play - Coming To Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile UK This Spring

It's hardly a surprise, but it's welcome news nonetheless: Sony Ericsson just announced the Xperia Play, also known as the PlayStation Phone. We're still waiting for the full specs on this PlayStation certified device, so be sure to check back here soon for all the official details!

Update: The Play will run Android 2.3 Gingerbread at launch, and will be compatible with 50 games, including such titles as Assassin's Creed, Guitar Hero, Dead Space, and Reckless Racing. Compatibility with PSOne games - presumably via the PlayStation Suite - is also in the pipelines.

Update 2: It's official: This spring, Verizon will become the first US carrier to offer the Xperia Play!

Sony Ericsson's upcoming "PlayStation phone," the Xperia Play, has been leaking left and right pretty much since its inception, and therefore it's no surprise that its first official commercial was also reveals via a leak.

Droidnytt.no, a Norwegian Android fan site, published the following video showing our little green friend getting thumbs attached to his hands for easier game controller handling, all in the creepiest way imaginable.

Confirmed: Sony Ericsson Announcing Xperia Play On February 13th, Gingerbread Included

There's been no shortage of leaks involving the Xperia Play, but Sony Ericsson hasn't said a single word on the matter... until now, that is. A new event was just posted on the company's Facebook page, and guess what it's related to:

That's right - expect an official announcement of the Xperia Play on February 13 (the day Mobile World Congress kicks off) at 1:00 p.m. EST / 10:00 a.m. PST. Can't wait? Check out the (now official) commercial for the device - not only is it super creepy; its description confirms that the phone will ship with Android 2.3 (Gingerbread).

Sony PlayStation Suite And PlayStation Store Official, Bring PSOne Games To Android Devices

Sony's new PlayStation Suite isn't the PlayStation Phone (or the Xperia Play) we were expecting, but it's arguably something even better for those of us who love gaming but hate the idea of giving up our current Android device(s).

Sony claims that PlayStation Suite will offer "legendary original PlayStation content" and says it will be a "cross platform, cross device" PSOne emulator. In reality, it's limited to Android 2.3 and beyond - a version of Android only one currently available handset runs (and it's not Sony's own Xperia X10). Still, PS Suite does look intriguing, especially when you consider Sony's "PlayStation Certified" program for hardware manufacturers, which will, supposedly, ensure a high-quality gaming experience.

Xperia Play Prototype Previewed, So Far Only Plays PSX Games

Engadget was lucky enough to get its hands on a prototype of Sony's much-anticipated PlayStation Phone (believed to launch as the Xperia Play), and while not everything on the unit they got was finalized (Wi-Fi was completely broken), it does give us a pretty good idea of what to expect when the phone officially launches.

First, we have some of the most important specs:

  • 4.0" 854 x 480 LCD display
  • Single-core 1 GHz processor (believed to be Qualcomm) with Adreno 205 GPU
  • 512 MB RAM
  • Android 2.3 with Timescape UI
  • 5 megapixel camera

That single-core processor might seem disappointing with all the excitement surrounding Tegra 2 phones, but the Xperia Play still manages to get high marks in a number of benchmark tests (including a Quadrant score of 1,689).

Just days after Kaz Hirai teased the world with talk of Sony's future in smartphones, tablets, and the PlayStation brand (all without confirming or denying the existence of a PlayStation phone), Chinese site IT168 has posted an in-depth review of the engineering version that they managed to get ahold of. Not only is the PSP Phone very real; from the looks of it, the device is almost ready for prime time.
