Those following HTC's efforts to liberate bootloaders everywhere have a bit more to talk about tonight, as the Taiwanese manufacturer added support for a handful of devices.

For those not in the loop, HTC pledged to enable unlocking the bootloaders of all devices released after September 2011, but is doing the community one better by extending support to older models as well. HTC allows users to unlock their bootloaders using a quick, (relatively) easy online tool.

CyanogenMod 7 has earned its reputation as the most reliable Gingerbread ROM, even though it hasn't yet entered stable mode. And tonight, the fun goes on - RC4 RC3.14159265358979323846264338327, as the CM team so lovingly refers to it, has just been launched for all supported CM devices.

While RC4 doesn't contain any ground-breaking new features, it does bring a number of bug fixes - for example, hardware acceleration has been added to the Nook Color, and EGL has seen a big fix. It isn't perfect yet - kmobs notes that there may be some "lingering GPS issues on the EVO ...

While the owners of HTC Wildfires have known for a while now that their devices would be eventually receiving Froyo, and that it probably wouldn't happen until Christmas, they were still secretly hoping HTC wouldn't take over 6 months to accomplish the feat. At least it looks like the company is keeping its word, which is refreshing nowadays, to say the least.

Starting this week, HTC will be rolling out Froyo to European Wildfire variants, with the rest of the world following sometime between now and February 2011. Better late than never, I suppose, although by then, we could ...

Today is obviously the day for popular applications to add QVGA support. As Rovio did only hours ago, Skype have added support for the increasingly-common 320x240 resolution in their application. That's good news for owners of the HTC Wildfire, Motorola Charm, Huawei IDEOS and LG Optimus T/S, who were left out in the cold until now. Skype for Android has had some nice bug fixes and improvements added, too:

Improvements:

  • 320*240 and 240*400 screen resolutions are now supported.
  • Hardware back key is now supported.
  • Reduced power consumption in idle mode.
  • Signing out from Skype now exits Skype.
  • Improved

While the UK has had the Desire HD since early last week, the EVO look-a-like model and its sibling are only starting to trickle into Irish stores. Currently Vodafone appears to be the only carrier offering one of the new Desires, with the Desire HD available on pre-pay for €479 or €229 on an 18 month €35 contract. However, many Irish Android users appear to be holding out for their network of choice, Meteor, to announce the Desire HD and to a lesser extent the Desire Z.

Today Meteor released a press statement indicating that an end to that torturous ...

This is seriously impressive stuff - the guys from the unrevoked team did it again, and this version 3.2 is definitely their best release yet. Most of the credit, outside of the core unrevoked team, belongs to Sebastian Krahmer for discovering the exploit that works on all supported phones.

HTC issued a press release today announcing four HTC-branded phones (HTC phones were previously branded Dopod in China) are to be released in China in a deal with China Mobile and electronics retailer GOME Electrical Appliances (the largest electronics reseller in China). Three of those phones run Android. One, the Tianxi, looks to be a rebranded HD2 running Windows Mobile, which as we all know, can run Android.

Unfortunately, it appears removal of Google branding from Android devices (including the Market) in China will continue with these new phones. This is a requirement for Android phones running on China Mobile, ...

Update schedules are rarely a final thing, and users can get quite angry when they don’t receive updates according to schedule. However, HTC may have finally given themselves a schedule that they can adhere to: all of their recently released phones will be updated to Android 2.2 “before Christmas.” They had previously announced that ‘several’ models would receive the update in Q3 2010, so it’s unclear if this announcement means that timetable has shifted.

While rumors say that the HTC Desire could receive the update in August, other HTC phones might not be updated for several months. HTC’s higher-end ...

HTC Wildfire Official Site Is Now Live

Oh how much I love HTC's website. It is clean, simple, and very well laid out - other mobile companies should learn from them. HTC is not a small company by far but manage to present all the information we need in a way that no other manufacturer site I've seen (<3 HTC).

Remember the HTC Wildfire revelation to the public yesterday? To keep the momentum going, this morning HTC launched their official HTC Wildfire site, full of specs, photos, and highlights. If you are interested in this phone at all, or if you want ...

After the good gentlemen over at Smartphone Arena broke embargo this morning, HTC went ahead and made things official with their latest Android handset, the HTC Wildfire.

redwildfire whitewildfire

Looking like the bastard child of an HTC Legend and Google Nexus One, it seems the Wildfire is intended to further flesh out HTC’s lineup of Android handsets. The handset is set to hit Europe and Asia in Q3 2010, which is a shame, because this is definitely the kind of handset that T-Mobile US could use. At this point, their current line up is beginning to show its age and their latest ...
