Tablets are still trying to find their place in the world. Are they productivity tools, media consumption devices, or are they all-purpose, do-anything magic slabs with a bevy of sensors and radios allowing you to unlock the powers of the universe? Air Display leans more towards the latter, turning your tablet into a secondary touchscreen display for Windows or Mac.

The app works via WiFi, which means that not only can you save a scarce video-out port on your machine, but you can also use the display from anywhere within WiFi range.

For those tired of strangers latching on to their unprotected Wi-Fi network, or simply looking to have a little fun at the expense of others, Digitalsquid created Network Spoofer, allowing users to play a few tricks on those connected to just about any accessible Wi-Fi network.

Users can switch, blur, or flip images, redirect browsers to specific URLs or videos (with a special setting for automatic RickRolling), and change Google searches (on others' computers) all from their rooted, Android-powered device.

A few days ago, Motorola pushed out a special soak test of the ICS update to a number of Wi-Fi XOOM owners in the U.S. Apparently, no serious issues were found by the company's engineers, as the very same Android 4.0.3 update (IML77) is now rolling out to everyone. Well, everyone in the U.S. with a Wi-Fi XOOM that is. This makes the XOOM the 2nd mainstream tablet device to officially receive ICS, losing out only to the Transformer Prime that beat it to the punch by only a couple of days.

Update 2: ASUS has issued an official statement on the matter and determined that the Prime's GPS is functioning as intended, which for many folks means essentially non-functional.

Please note that this product is not a professional GPS device ... To avoid inconveniencing users who demand a powerful GPS device, we made the decision to remove it from our specification sheet and marketing communications. We apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

If you're looking to get a NOOK Color this holiday season, and have an appreciation for hot discounts (who doesn't?), today's your lucky day. Barnes & Noble is now selling manufacturer refurbished units on eBay for just $129.99 with free shipping.

image

For those not familiar, the NOOK Color features a 7" VividView IPS display, an 800MHz processor, 512MB of RAM, and of course, access to over 2.5 million titles in "the world's largest bookstore."

While the NOOK Color may have recently been overshadowed by B&N's NOOK Tablet, it's still being supported, and is a great solution for the money.

HTC Amaze 4G users should be expecting an over-the-air update to roll out soon, according to T-Mobile's support documentation. The update carries software build 1.43.531.3 (still Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread), adding IMS WiFi calling, Google Music compatibility, and various stability/functionality enhancements.

image

Users can check for the update manually by hitting Menu > About Phone > HTC Software Updates > Check. Otherwise, you have only to sit back and wait for an OTA notification before you can begin enjoying WiFi calling on your Amaze 4G.

For those who spend a lot of time looking at a computer, and can't be bothered to look at their phone very often, Sand Studio has introduced AirDroid, an app that allows users to control their Android Phone from a computer via WiFi.

The great thing about AirDroid is that it works - it's easy to start up, and functions flawlessly (in my experience). The interface is also very polished - mimicking a desktop launcher complete with moveable icons, a task bar, and controls that allow you to do just about anything.

android wifi tether

In the last couple of days, I've been closely interacting with Harald Mueller, the developer behind Android Wi-Fi Tether for root users, a free and open source tethering app for Android. Android Wi-Fi Tether is pretty much a de-facto app when when it comes to tethering on Android devices that have native Wi-Fi tethering disabled (thanks, carriers), and is what I consider one of the most important apps in our supposedly open ecosystem.

The intrepid folks over at XDA are always tinkering away to try and make using your Android device a better experience. And a few weeks ago, one of them (namely, temasek) found that the Android Market has some issues trying to resolve DNS servers when your device is connected over Wi-Fi. This can cause the Market to load slowly, and it's definitely something I've experienced on my own phone.

The solution?

Update: Looks like WiFiKill was in violation of Google's terms and conditions, as it "could be used in a way that is harmful to devices, networks, or users," per Google itself. No worries, though -- the dev has the free version available on his forum, and if you want to show some donation love, you can grab the ad-free version from SlideMe.

Have you ever wanted to evict someone from your Wi-Fi network for whatever reason?
