In a rather unfortunate bit of news regarding Verizon's Galaxy Nexus, a rumor that the device will not have support for Google Wallet has been confirmed.

image

A Google spokesperson confirmed to Computer World today that the hotly anticipated Nexus device won't support Google's burgeoning NFC-based mobile payment system, but gave no word as to why Verizon decided to forego the service.

Verizon's decision could have something to do, however, with Isis – a consortium comprised of VZW, AT&T and T-Mobile, who have paired with four major credit card companies to form their own NFC-based payment venture. Of course, this is purely speculation, as there's no official word just yet regarding the Nexus' lack of Wallet functionality.

On what could possibly qualify as the most boring day of the year as far as Android news is concerned, a gem has finally surfaced: the seemingly official specs of the illusive Droid 4. We first caught a glimpse of the D4 last month, along with some suggested specs. If this leaked internal Verizon document obtained by Droid Life is to be believed, then most of the specs have now been realized.

  • 4-inch qHD display
  • 1.2Ghz dual-core processor (most likely the same one that's in the Droid RAZR)
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8MP rear shooter
  • 5 row slide-out QWERTY
  • Android 2.3.x (will most likely be upgraded to ICS)
  • 1785mAh battery
  • 4G LTE

There is something to be said about this device, and I'll go ahead and put it out there: this is what the Droid 3 should have been.

Whether you're looking for a new Verizon Wireless device or some accessories, you may find that this Black Friday deal from LivingSocial is just what the doctor ordered. For 25 bucks, you get a $50 voucher to spend on said items, valid November 29th through December 31st of 2011.

A word of warning - you can only use it in VZW retail stores or through telesales, but not online or at authorized dealers. The coupons cannot be used for business accounts and are likely not stackable, meaning you can only redeem one per purchase (the exact language in the terms doesn't specifically state so, but don't count on it).

Never one to keep its source code hidden away from the public's prying eyes (certainly more than can be said for, say, HTC), Motorola has decided to release the DROID RAZR's source code. This should make ROM development significantly easier, so hopefully we'll see a few more alternatives to MOTOBLUR pop up shortly. Devs, get on it!

If you've been waiting for Big Red to show spread the LTE love in your area, your time may come tomorrow. VZW announced fourteen new LTE markets last month, along with plans for expansion in four existing markets, and it's all set to flip the switch tomorrow, November 17th.  Here's the list one more time:

  • Little Rock, AR
  • Savannah, GA
  • Cedar Rapids and Des Moines, IA
  • Lexington, KY
  • Starkville, MS
  • Kansas City and Springfield/Branson, MO
  • Lincoln, NE
  • Orange County, NY
  • Greater Providence, RI
  • Rapid City, SD
  • Roanoke, VA
  • Appleton and Oshkosh, WI

Expansions:

  • Louisville, KY
  • Grand Rapids, MI
  • Minneapolis/St. Paul, MN
  • Pittsburgh, PA

So, what's the verdict?

Update: We're getting reports that this should be rolling out in full-force now. Anyone get theirs today?

Update 2: We're hearing that a lot of people are still without the update, so we pinged HTC to make sure everything is rolling as planned. Everything is right on schedule, so just sit tight -- it should be hitting your device anytime now.

Update 3: After months of silence, it seems the beast has awoken, and the update is rolling out yet again, with the same version number 4.06.605.3. There is also word of a smaller 8.6MB update 4.08.605.2, which will probably piggyback on top of 4.06.605.3.

Here's a tidbit of good news for those looking to pick up a new 4G LTE device on Verizon this month -- be it the Droid RAZR, HTC Rezound, Galaxy Nexus (granted that it actually comes out this month), or even an existing LTE handset. Starting tomorrow, November 8th, Big Red will be doubling the data for all new or existing customers who re-sign their two year agreement with an LTE phone.

So, instead of being stuck with 2GB of data, you'll have 4GB to play with before overage charges kick in. Sure, it's still not unlimited, but for anyone forced onto a tiered data plan, 4GB is far better than 2GB.  If you're already on a tiered plan and have a 4G device, don't fret -- simply login to your My Verizon account and you'll be able to update your plan to the new 4GB allowance.

Motorola-Droid-RAZR-012

Oh, the DROID RAZR - the very name RAZR brings back memories of the turn of the century (we can say that now, right?) - flip phones and cheap, unlimited data. Those were the good 'ol days. But let's talk about the here and now, Motorola's latest Android phone is the company's most ambitious handset to date, and the general consensus? It's good, but... [insert complaint about battery life or width / Galaxy Nexus is coming comment here.]

In all seriousness, one great thing about rounding up a number of reviews in one place is finding out what numerous sources agree upon about a particular piece of hardware, and more interestingly, what they don't.

The rumor mill is going nuts with release dates for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, and now we can add one more to the list. We already know that the European version of the device will be available on November 17th, and, according to an uncompleted internal Verizon document nabbed by Android Central, it looks like Verizon may be joining the global revolution on the same day.

There is absolutely nothing that screams confirmed! about this, so just take it at face value for the time being. I'm sure Big Red will make an official announcement as soon as they have a solid date in the crosshairs.

After the Galaxy Nexus announcement, there was one question still rolling around unanswered: when is it going to be released? While that question has been answered for our brothers and sisters across the pond, those of us here in the US have been left without a word from Verizon (or anyone else, for that matter). Of course, we have heard dozens of rumors, but nothing with any proof to back it up. That all changes now, though, as Verizon's Holiday Roadmap has gracefully fallen into the hands of Droid-Life.

It's pretty clear-cut, and most of the devices on the list we already know about; so, let's get to the point.
