Update: We all knew it was coming, so this shouldn't come as a shocker to anyone -- Verizon found the loophole. Not only has the "issue" been fixed, but Big Red is now taking the necessary steps to revert changed plans back to their tiered state. Sorry, guys - it was worth a shot.

So, you signed up with Big Red after it switched over to tiered plans, and now you're envious of all your friends who flaunt their unlimited data all over the place.

Earlier this week, Verizon announced that it would start charging customers a $2 fee for paying their bill with a debit card either online or over the phone. Naturally, this caused a huge uproar among customers -- sure, it's only a couple bucks, but it's the principal of the thing. Charging customer to pay their bill?  The very idea doesn't make sense. It's just whack.

So, after enormous customer backlash, guess what Verizon did?

It seems like this is becoming a weekly habit, doesn't it? Big Red 4G LTE devices across the nation are once again without data services (mine included).

It appears that this just happened, so there's no word from VZW as to when we can expect data services to be restored. We'll keep you posted on any new information as it comes along; until then, I hope you're around a Wi-Fi network.

According to Verizon's system update documentation, owners of big red's Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 can expect a software update any time now. While it isn't the Ice Cream Sandwich users are undoubtedly craving, the update (bringing system software to I905-EL01) offers quite a few interesting features.

Among these are improvements to Samsung's Touchwiz UX, a new Social Hub widget, built-in photo editing capabilities, and The Daily – a news app that allows users to "access the best of print, web, and broadcast news from around the world."

The update also brings Bluetooth 3.0 compatibility, additional support for more Wi-Fi routers, DivX, security patches, enhancements to TouchWiz's music and video players, and built-in support for "industry standard VPN clients." There's no word yet on just when the update will be available, but we'll be here to keep you updated.

Update: Looks like things are getting stitched up on VZW's end, as a spokesperson told Android Central that "4G LTE service is returning to normal." Here's the full quote:

Verizon Wireless 4G LTE service is returning to normal this morning after company engineers worked to resolve an issue with the 4G network during the early morning hours today.   Throughout this time, 4G LTE customers were able to make voice calls and send and receive text messages.

After months of wondering and looking around for answers, we think we've finally found out why all of Verizon's 4G LTE phones (and modems / USB dongles) are having data connectivity issues, and it's a wee-bit technical even for us, but we'll do our best. This information has been gathered from various comments and forums across the net, so, take us at our word here.

When Verizon launched its LTE network in November of 2010, it was the first time the carrier had utilized a GSM-based (WCDMA, as opposed to CDMA2000) network in the United States.

Update: We started hearing word last night that this update is rolling out, and that seems to be confirmed across the board. Hit Settings > About phone > Software update to see if it's available on your end. Thanks, Scott!

Verizon updated its support documents for the Motorola Droid Bionic earlier today with info of an OTA update that should fix a gaggle of issues with the device.

Among the fixes, you'll find improved 3G and 4G connectivity, "improvements in device stability" to "help avoid power cycles," improvements in the messaging application, and a fix for the issue that caused apps to disappear from the app tray when moved to the SD card, among others.

Galaxy-Nexus

Confirming recent rumors, a Verizon equipment guide has cropped up showing December 9th as the official launch date of Samsung's long-awaited Galaxy Nexus with VZW.

For those who have forgotten why they should be excited about the Galaxy Nexus, here are it's awesome specs one more time:

  • TI OMAP 4460 Dual-core processor at 1.2GHz
  • 1GB RAM
  • Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich
  • 4.65" SAMOLED display at 1280x720
  • NFC Capability
  • 4G LTE Connectivity
  • A slender frame measuring 5.33"x2.67"x0.37"
  • 1080p Video recording

The Galaxy Nexus is certainly a beastly phone, and looks like it will be well worth the wait when Verizon customers can get their hands on the device in just a couple of days.
