[Deal Alert] Get $10 of free Starbucks credit when you add $10 to the app via Visa Checkout [Updated]

Dear Starbucks: thank you for existing. Not for your overpriced smoothie-coffee or your approachable yuppie atmosphere. No, thank you for being a Wi-Fi-soaked escape from my rural family's home during the holidays - T-Mobile service is still crappy out there. And while I'm extending some holiday thanks, I might as well give a shout-out to Visa, which is giving Starbucks customers $10 of free credit via the Starbucks app. That's approximately 2.5 Frappuccinos.

Android Pay is getting support for Visa Checkout and MasterPass, Samsung Pay gets MasterPass

Android Pay is most commonly used to pay for things in real life via NFC technology, but from the start Google aimed to make it compatible with online payment systems. That hasn't really caught on, but a new partnership with Visa and MasterCard could help. Not to be left behind, Samsung Pay is also working with MasterCard.

Android Pay now available in Hong Kong

Android Pay has slowly been growing to more and more regions, and now has finally reached the city of Hong Kong. This makes Hong Kong and Singapore the only regions in Asia supported by Android Pay.

Pay will be accepted at over 5,000 locations including 7-Eleven, Circle K, Fortress, McDonald's, and more. This works exactly like Android Pay in other regions; just install the app and you're good to go.

MasterCard and Visa cards are supported, as well as cards from BEA, DBS, Dah Sing Bank, Hang Seng Bank, HSBC, and Standard Chartered Bank. Online and in-app transactions with Android Pay also work. Google is also encouraging additional merchants to support Android Pay, so Hongkongers might have more locations accepting Android Pay in the near future.

Google is finally kicking out unsupported cards from Android Pay in mid-October, causing people to freak out

Last year around this time, Google announced that unsupported cards already in Google Wallet accounts would be able to be used with Android Pay, but only for a limited time. Problem was, we didn't exactly know how long Google's "limited time" would be. Thanks to a ton of emails that were sent out to Android Pay users with unsupported cards today, we now have an actual date: October 14th, 2016.

Samsung Pay app update adds support for Samsung Rewards Card

We may have all been a bit dubious about Samsung Pay when it was first announced, especially as another duplicate service that Samsung was launching to provide its own solution instead of Google's or Apple's, but Pay has proven to be more of a success story so far. Launches in multiple countries, ease of use, and MST compatibility make it a great contender in the mobile payment segment.

With this continuous improvement comes a new feature of Samsung Pay: Samsung's own Rewards card. You can earn it by participating in different promotions — there's one right now for a $20 Rewards card after making your first payment in the US — and it'll show up as a VISA card inside your Pay account.

[Deal Alert] Verizon And LG Offer Up To $400 Off The G4 And A Tablet With Coupons And Rebates

The LG G4 has a lot going for it, including a confirmed update to Android Marshmallow. And if you're in the market to buy one for the Verizon network, it currently has some fantastic price discounts. A reader tipped us the following combination of coupon codes and rebates, so follow along:

  1. Use the promo code "LGG4SAVE" to take $100 off of a new G4 from Verizon's online store or mention it at a retail store. This drops the current price from $552 for the 32GB to $452. This promotion expires on November 14th.

Note: this code doesn't seem to work if you buy the phone outright; you have to select the payment plan.

Deal Alert: Use VISA Checkout To Get A Refurbished Nexus 7 16GB From Newegg For $102.99 After $50 Rebate

Newegg is offering up a pretty compelling deal on the Nexus 7 right now. Those interested in picking up a refurbished 16GB model can do so for about $103 (before tax) using VISA Checkout, after a $50 rebate.

This deal is actually a combination of promotions from Newegg - the site is offering 10% off (up to $20) when users select VISA Checkout and use promo code VCO, and Newegg's listing for the refurbished 16GB Nexus 7 offers a $50 rebate (via prepaid card).

For those unfamiliar, VISA Checkout is the credit card company's "easier way to pay online," offering checkout solutions for online sellers similar to those offered by Google Wallet or PayPal.

Report: Google Offering A $150 Consolation Credit For Chromebook Pixel LTE Owners Screwed Over By Verizon

In case we didn't make it clear with yesterday's post, we were more than a little miffed at Verizon's dismissal of Chromebook Pixel LTE owners. The company told customers that it had unceremoniously ended Google's free 100MB/month data bundle for the Pixel LTE after just one year, despite the initial two-year service promotion. Today Google is offering a consolation prize to those customers who bought the Chromebook Pixel LTE from the Play Store: a $150 refund credit.

According to ComputerWorld's JR Raphael, who broke the original Verizon-Google story, Google will be sending $150 prepaid VISA cards to customers who bought the $1450 Pixel LTE while the promotion was still being advertised.

Visa And MasterCard Announce Support For NFC Payments With Host Card Emulation In KitKat

That Google Wallet icon is looking awfully lonely in Android 4.4's Tap and Pay menu. Twin announcements from Visa and MasterCard could finally mean a few more options for NFC payments on Android, though. Both payment technology firms will be providing tools for card issuers to support Host Card Emulation (HCE) on user accounts.

HCE

This doesn't mean that all your Visa and MasterCard accounts are going to magically start working with HCE, but some of them might in the not too distant future. Banks will be able to use the specifications published by Visa and MasterCard to create or update apps with HCE support.
