The Hulu Plus app is perfectly capable of pumping out videos on its own to a small screen. With a Chromecast plugged into your TV, it's even able to cast content out to the big screen as well. Now the app is gaining a feature that will give it even more control over your viewing experience. Starting with the latest update, Hulu Plus is capable of becoming a remote control for Hulu content streaming from the Xbox One, PlayStation 3, or PlayStation 4. Read More
Smartwatches get all the credit, but they're largely nothing without the companion app calling all the shots from a nearby smartphone. So when said companion receives a pretty substantial update, it breathes new life into the accessory it's paired with. Today Sony has rolled out such an upgrade for its Smartwatch 2 companion app, introducing a brand new watch face editor.
From this interface, wearers can choose which watch face and widgets (weather, calendar, etc.) that they want on their watch. Read More
Last week, AT&T started pushing the KitKat OTA to Samsung Galaxy S4 Active owners on its network. Looks like that was a short-lived rollout, as the company has now halted the update, explaining that it is working with Samsung to improve the OTA.
Seems like that's something could've been done before the update actually started rolling out, so the odds are that something is actually broken and both companies are just staying mum about it. Read More
Two days ago, Google Glass received the XE16 update that bumped the device up to KitKat, introduced photo bundles, brought in sorted voice commands, and added a number of other features. This release was different for a few reasons, the most notable of which being the long wait (the last release was XE12 back in December).
Now the Glass team has released the update's system image to the Internet. The file is available for download from the usual location. Read More
From the beginning the Chromecast has been able to handle the basics such as Netflix and YouTube. More compatibility trickled in, with services like Hulu jumping on board, and apps like BeyondPod and Flex throwing in their support. Now Chromecast icons can be found all over the place. But the offering is still weak in one area - sports. Today Chromecast is knocking that issue out of the park (at least for baseball fans) by finding its way into the MLB.com At Bat app. Read More
Along with two new apps, today's Update Wednesday has brought us a new version of YouTube with version 5.6.31. The previous version was 5.5.27, so it became clear right away that we should expect something relatively significant as opposed to simple bug fixes. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to disappoint those of you still waiting for offline and screen-off playback - those are not here just yet. There are no major UI changes either. Read More
The more rugged, athletic version of the Galaxy S4 is about to indulge itself with a taste of KitKat. AT&T has started rolling out an OTA update to its version of the device that will bring it up to Android 4.4.2. The company has provided the following changelog on its blog.
- Improved user interface with Android 4.4 KitKat: The latest version of Android includes enhancements such as re-styled status and navigation bars, a new full-screen-immersive mode, color emoji support, improved closed captioning support, stronger security and smarter power use.
House hunting can be tedious, but the tools you use on your search don't have to be. The Homesnap app lets users look up information about homes and neighborhoods just by snapping photos of locations of interest. When it came to Android nearly a year ago, it arrived with an interface stuck somewhere between Gingerbread and Ice Cream Sandwich. Now, with version 3.0, the app is ready for life on KitKat. It doesn't matter which phone a Sony QX10 or QX100 owner uses, these cameras are better. The drawback is that the user experience is nothing short of awkward. One particular issue is slow NFC connection times, making it challenging to capture spontaneous shots (and aren't those the best kind?). Fortunately, this is the type of problem an update can address. Firmware version 3.0 is now available for both models, doing precisely that. Read More
It's becoming more common for manufacturers to put their proprietary applications in the Play Store for easy updating, a trend essentially started by Motorola. HTC recently followed suit by adding several of its apps – including Sense TV, Gallery, and BlinkFeed – to the Store. Read More
