Another month, another update for Google Glass. The OTA started rolling out yesterday, offering a safe way to experience a nice set of improvements to the Glass experience. Still, advanced users need to flash updates for one reason or another, and they will be pleased to know that the XE8 system image is now available for download. The ZIP file is a healthy 348MB in size, which is roughly the same as last month's.

Last week, we heard from Dan Morrill (via Reddit) that "top men" were working on the "sleep of death" issue that caused 4.3 devices to become unresponsive if they fell asleep while streaming from Netflix through the Chromecast.

Tonight, though, it looks like the issue is already fixed with Netflix's update to version 2.4.1. We've been testing the update since it popped up earlier this evening, and haven't experienced a lockup yet.

Google is rolling out an update to the Android Play Store with version 4.3.10. The new update follows version 4.2.9 which was discovered on July 25th, only a week and a half ago, and brought several very minor changes. Unlike the previous update, 4.3.10 is more significant in user-facing features (yay, new stuff!).

What's New?

There's a new Ron in town, and it's me. Ron's not the only one capable of doing teardowns, and we've already scheduled a duel to sort it out once and for all (whoever lives gets to continue the teardown tradition at AP).

Some app updates have really short change logs, but don't let that deceive you into thinking this isn't a big deal. Tune-In Radio was updated today with only "We've fixed some bugs to improve your TuneIn experience" listed as what's new. What bugs did they fix? Well, the only one that matters to us is that they got rid of the persistent notification that plagued users running Android 4.3.

Nova Launcher is one of the most popular home screen replacements out there, and the developers are hard at work ensuring that this doesn't change any time soon. The latest update introduces even more ways to customize every aspect of your launcher's appearance. Anyone who makes the jump to version 2.2 will gain the ability to add backgrounds to their docks, customize the look of their unread badges, and dabble with new scroll effects.

If you've already updated to Android 4.3, whether via an OTA or by flashing it manually, and rooted it, you're more than likely using Chainfire's SuperSU, which carefully works around the new restrictions Google put in place. Cody has a good write-up about why they did it and what's going on, so go read that if you're interested in the details.

Chainfire created the Android 4.3-compatible root method and the updated SuperSU back when the first leaks showed up for the Galaxy S4 but hasn't updated it for a few weeks.

Simultaneously with the Android 4.3 release, Google started rolling out an update to the Play Store with version 4.2.9, which follows closely behind 4.2.3 from last week's Nexus 4 system dump leak.

Google laid out a few important announcements today, which included both Android 4.3 and a new streaming device called Chromecast among others. As a result, the Play Music app was updated with support for Chromecast streaming last night, and Play Movies & TV received a very similar update today.

What's New

  • Send what you’re watching to your TV screen (when used with Chromecast).
  • Support for virtual surround sound on the new (2013) Nexus 7, and on the Nexus 10 running Android 4.3.

Google officially unveiled the newest version of Android this morning – Android 4.3 Jelly Bean – and of course the first question is when can I have it?! Good news for current Nexus owners: it's coming today. The current edition Nexuses – 10, 7, and 4 – along with the Galaxy Nexus (GSM is assumed here), will all begin getting the update as of today.

Of course, there's another big question here: when will the Google Play Edition HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 get the update?

As expected, Google [finally] took the wraps off Android 4.3 At today's "Breakfast with Sundar Pichai" event. On the surface, 4.3 is all too familiar, as it essentially looks identical to 4.2 in that there isn't a single distinctive thing to tell the two apart from a UI perspective. However, that doesn't mean there isn't anything new – it's all under the hood, baby.

Let's take a look at what's new:

  • Multi-user with restricted profiles – content control on the user level
  • Bluetooth Low Energy support
  • OpenGL ES 3.0
  • New DRM APIs – Netflix is the first to support it, full 1080p streaming
  • ...a lot more new APIs

Android 4.3 will be available on the new Nexus 7 at launch, and will also be rolling out to the Nexus 4, current Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and the Galaxy Nexus beginning today.
