I am a big fan of Evernote, using it everyday to manage my to-do list and work on long-term projects. However, over the years this "simple" note-taking suite has expanded with an unwieldy number of features, making it somewhat difficult to manage. So, it is always nice to see an Evernote update for Android that just aims to make the service better without adding further bloat.

The recent update (version 3.5), downloadable from the Android Market, adds smart titles, quick saves, better layout of images, and a number of crucial bug fixes.

Since launch, the ASUS Transformer Prime's GPS issues have hampered an otherwise stellar tablet. To make matters worse, ASUS confirmed that the problem was due to the Prime's all-aluminium construction, indicating that a software fix was unlikely. Indeed ASUS was forced to release a new version of the Prime (TF700T), with an updated back panel to improve the GPS functionality. However, ASUS has not given up all hope on the original Prime as a new OTA update (V9.4.2.7) is rolling out, which could fix the GPS drivers.

A few days ago, Motorola pushed out a special soak test of the ICS update to a number of Wi-Fi XOOM owners in the U.S. Apparently, no serious issues were found by the company's engineers, as the very same Android 4.0.3 update (IML77) is now rolling out to everyone. Well, everyone in the U.S. with a Wi-Fi XOOM that is. This makes the XOOM the 2nd mainstream tablet device to officially receive ICS, losing out only to the Transformer Prime that beat it to the punch by only a couple of days.

Justin Case has done it again, bringing root access back to users of Amazon's Kindle Fire who accepted the recent firmware update to version 6.2.2. BurritoRoot 2 is an easy-to-use exploit that only requires adb (Android debug bridge) and a few moments of your time. Users looking to root their device after Amazon's latest firmware update can grab BurritoRoot 2 using the download mirrors below.

To use the exploit, just download the file and run the following commands from adb:

adb push BurritoRoot2.bin /data/local/

adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/BurritoRoot2.bin

adb shell /data/local/BurritoRoot2.bin

adb root

adb shell id

<if uid = 0 continue, if not start over>

adb remount

adb push su /system/xbin/su

adb shell chown 0.0 /system/xbin/su

adb shell chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su

adb remount

adb install Superuser.apk (skip this step if its already installed)

For more information, check out Justin's original thread over at XDA.

In a familiar turn of events, Amazon has pushed out another root-breaking firmware update, bringing the Kindle Fire's firmware up to version 6.2.2.

Shortly after Amazon's last Kindle Fire update, our very own Justin Case made quick work of gaining root access for the Kindle Fire once again, releasing BurritoRoot, a tool that made rooting the Fire quick and (relatively) easy. Unfortunately, Amazon's latest update keeps BurritoRoot from doing its job, but it appears to bring about at least one useful change.

Well, it's official - the "project" Xoom owners have been waiting for is an update to Ice Cream Sandwich, meant as a soak test, expected to last through the weekend. Moto has begun pushing the new software as of 9pm PST. An anonymous tipster has provided us with shots of a private section of Motorola's official XOOM support forum, which confirm that the update is going live to those lucky enough to join the test group.

Owners of the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint may find themselves hitting the install button on an OTA update today. The update brings a few minor tweaks to the device:

  • Updated Peep client (to align with Twitter)
  • Battery life improvements
  • Security update

It began rolling out earlier today and should hit all devices over the next five days.

To see if it's available on your device, hit Settings > System Update > HTC Software Update > Check Now.

ASUS isn't the only one upgrading their tablets to Ice Cream Sandwich in the beginning of February - we were running around the South Hall at CES 2012 and ran into Archos, which, among other things, manufactures a whole series of G9 tablets (various combinations of 101 and 80).

Guess what - all of the G9 tablets are scheduled to receive ICS starting the first week of February (they did let everyone know it would happen "in the near future" a few days ago, but we were able to get the most up-to-date timeline today).

If you haven't notice, the Google Search app for Android received an update a little bit ago. This update is for users running Android 2.2 or 2.3 and brings some UI and performance enhancements. Once updated, this is what you'll see:

  • New color scheme and simplified UI
  • Faster, more responsive searches
  • Enhanced suggestions and query editing
  • Better localized suggestions and search results for more countries
  • Long press to remove history items

You can also tap that little arrow to the right of a search suggestion to add it to your search term before searching, making the whole process a little faster.

TP-ICS

Yesterday, Nvidia's CEO announced that the Ice Cream Sandwich (that's Android 4.0 for those of you new to the game) update for the quad-core Asus Transformer Prime would begin rolling out immediately. Sure enough, users started receiving the update, and we managed to snag and host the OTA ourselves (as well as help you prevent it from breaking root). For most, the update brought everything you'd expect from the hot new version of Android: even smoother, snappier performance, sleeker transitions, and various other perks.
