Google Currents is probably the single best-looking Android app Google puts out, and since its initial release, it has also been so slow to sync that it's practically useless. But no longer - Currents has received its first major update, and rather than drag this thing out, I'll just present you with the changelog:

  • Sync speed - dramatic (7x) performance boost
  • Instant online sync - no need to press "sync". Just open an edition for latest content.

A new update with version 2.20.605.3 is coming to Verizon's girly HTC Rhyme. Before you get too excited, no, it's not Ice Cream Sandwich, and it doesn't even contain anything particularly exciting. Here, take a look:

Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a new software update, 2.20.605.3 710RD, for your HTC Rhyme. Verizon Wireless and HTC encourage you to download this update.

Device Features

  • “ Ringtones” has been replaced with “Edit Home” when the Menu key is pressed on the home screen.

Five days ago, Sprint announced that the Ice Cream Sandwich OTA was finally ready for the Nexus S 4G, but many of you still haven't received the update prompt. Yesterday, Google released the full OS image for the NS4G, but installing it does a full wipe, which may not be ideal for those just itching to upgrade.

Fortunately, the OTA link on Google's servers was finally found today by a number of AC forum members, which means you no longer have to wait for Sprint/Google and instead update your Nexus on your own.

Thanks again to the venerable JBQ of Google, the unmodified factory image of Android 4.0.4 for the Nexus S 4G (sojus, Android 4.0.4 IMM76D) is now available here. As JBQ states on Google+, this image is for those among you who have flashed to custom versions of AOSP and want to get back to factory state. No, by the way, there's still no word on an OTA update yet.

As with all the others, the factory images are available on the Factory Images for Nexus Devices page.

If you're into microblogging, quick posts, and tossing some images on the web double-fast, then you could use Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. If, however, you like to do all those things in once place and prefer a sort-of niche community in which to do it, then you should probably use Tumblr.

For the uninformed, Tumblr is basically a supercharged microblog that makes it really quick and easy to share content of all types, including quotes, images, links, audio, video, and simple text.

The extremely popular photo-sharing app Instagram, just days after hitting the Play Store, has received another update, this time bringing some pretty awesome changes.

Perhaps the most significant change the app's update to version 1.0.3 brings is compatibility for tablets and Wi-Fi handsets, meaning users can now share photos from all their Android devices with ease.

Besides the added compatibility, Instagram's latest update allows users to install the app to their SD card, thereby freeing up a little internal storage.

I don't know a single person who has Facebook and doesn't check it on their phone. I also don't know a single person who doesn't hate how ridiculously slow the official Facebook app is. Fortunately, Facebook has APIs that allow third-party applications to do everything that you would normally use the official app to do - and it many cases, they do it better. A good example of "doing it better" is Friendcaster fro Facebook, which just so happened to receive an pretty massive update to version 5 today.

Last week, we got word from a Best Buy tipster that ICS updates would be rolling out to the Droid RAZR/MAXX on April 4th and the HTC Rezound on April 6th. If you've checked the calendar lately, then you're probably aware that today is April 5th - one day later than ICS was supposed to hit the RAZR Twins. Still, that OTA is nowhere in sight (soak test details for the RAZRs did surface yesterday, but it wasn't ICS).

A new Google Play Store v3.5.16 started rolling out to some Android users in the last 24 hours. This version replaces 3.5.15, which brought a whole host of new features last time around, and reportedly brings fixes to those having trouble seeing purchased apps or experiencing force closes.

Additionally, improvements in snappiness were reported, but it could just end up being the placebo effect. I haven't found any other obvious changes thus far.

Update: Looks like Motorola cancelled the soak test due to "deployment issues." Word has it that the update could still happen sometime next week.

Thanks, DW!

DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX users excited for an Ice Cream Sandwich update by last week's Best Buy screenshot should brace themselves for some bad news – it looks like the aforementioned devices won't be getting Ice Cream Sandwich just yet after all.

According to a letter being sent out to members of Motorola's Feedback Network, the soak test slated to begin tomorrow simply brings an update to build number 6.12.181 with various enhancement and bug fixes.
