The Amazon Appstore is a great alternative to the Android Market. It's not perfect, however, and today the Appstore fixes a few of the most nagging problems. Not the least of which is those blasted app installation notifications. For those unaware, if you install an app on one device with the Amazon Appstore installed, you'll get a notification that you have a new app waiting on any others with the Appstore installed on.

Many TF101 owners have been [im]patiently waiting on Android 4.0 to hit their devices for at least a week now to no avail. Of course, knowing an update is floating around out there and having to wait for it is even more frustrating than actually waiting for the update to become available, so ASUS UK took to its Facebook page earlier today with a tip on how to get your hands on the update right now from the ASUS support pages for the TF101.

As the Galaxy S II is one of the best-selling Android devices to date, it's no surprise that many users are eagerly awaiting an update to Android 4.0. Samsung has already confirmed that it is in the works, and we've even seen a leaked build of what it could look like, but we've yet to hear an exact date that users can actually expect the update to roll out on.

Fortunately, Samsung Israel has taken to Facebook to announce that versions of the device in Israel - both unlocked and carrier-branded - will receive the update on March 15.

Last Updated: March 15th, 2012

The first update since November to both tablet and phone variants of the official YouTube app arrived today, bringing the Android 3.2+ compatible version to v3.5.5 and the versions for other devices to 2.4.4. The changelog seems to indicate that both of these received multiple bug fixes as well as the ability to sign in with a Google account. In addition to that, the version for older devices (2.4.4) received HD playback:

Android 3.2+ devices: v.3.5

  1. Sign-in with Google account
  2. Multiple bug fixes

Earlier Android devices: v.2.4

  1. Sign-in with Google account
  2. HD playback (on capable phones)
  3. Multiple bug fixes

This update is confusing and irritating for a few reasons.

In early January, ARCHOS let everyone know that the update to Android 4.0 would be coming "in the near future" to all G9 tablets, and a week later we saw them demoing a said update at CES. The rep at CES said the update was scheduled to roll out in the first week of February - a target which the company obviously missed. Now they've taken to their Facebook page once again to apologize for the delay and announce that "they fully anticipate deploying the upgrade within the next two weeks."

While the "anticipate" in that sentence leaves the company some wiggle room, it's nice to see the PR-challenged little company who has a spotty past on Android devices at least try to address both shortcomings.

We first discussed the impressively-featured, but somewhat ugly, CloudAround Music Player when it was released about two months ago. The developers promised a "slick new interface" was coming soon, and boy have they delivered - as well as brought some new, even more impressive features.

Let's start with the features first:

  • Full settings section including:
    • Caching limits
    • Cache Clearing
    • Ability to toggle hiding duplicates
    • Force album/artist art scan
    • Prevent artist metadata scanning
    • Wifi only settings
    • Artist art download quality
  • Completely new beautiful UI based on user feedback
    • We've had easily a hundred emails of requests
    • default background images that are easy on the eye
    • default art covers
  • New mini player on the songs listing page, with control as well as progress
  • Enhanced for tablet sized interfaces
  • Landscape and portrait mode for player pages
  • Artist Image Backgrounds
  • Fixed foundation layer to provide for a more reliable player under OS stress
  • Improved stream times
  • Ability to hide/unhide artists/albums/songs from user view
  • Performance boosts, which were critical for massive cloud accounts

When they say brand new interface, they really mean it.

The Verizon support docs were recently updated with information on a new OTA that should start hitting Droid 2 Global devices within the coming days (if not sooner). While the update isn't anything major, it still brings some notable enhancements to the D2G:

Device Features

  • Device is enabled with the Wireless Alerting System.
  • A Google Security Patch has been added to improve security level.
  • Fixed issue where the device may power ON without user interaction.

My favorite gallery replacement app QuickPic, which is notorious for its speed and simplicity, just got updated with a brand new spiffy UI based on the new Android design guidelines that were published at the time of the Ice Cream Sandwich release.

The new UI in v2.0 is now much cleaner and more fluid, with action buttons at the top right and context buttons showing up dynamically on the bottom when they're needed.

A mysterious update for Chrome for Android just landed in the Market; at this point, though, it's not entirely clear what this update does, as a changelog is seemingly absent from the listing.

Update: Here's the changelog:

Chrome for Android Beta has been updated to 0.16.4215.215, picking up changes that have gone in through Chrome 16.0.912.77.  Beyond the Chrome changes, this update contains:

  • Android Beam support - now beam URLs from Chrome to other devices with NFC.

Like clockwork this time, the Ice Cream Sandwich update is now being sent over-the-air to Transformer TF101 owners in the United States and Canada.

ASUS UK, which also promised the OTA today, assured us it's still coming:

To those asking, TF101 ICS update is scheduled to be with you all today. Please be patient, we have a whole world of Tablets to update ;)

Update: Looks like it's rolling out worldwide at this point.
