Motorola's got a special New Year's treat for prospective buyers of the Moto X: a huge price drop for those who are willing to go off-contract. The unsubsidized version of the Moto X sold on the Moto Maker customization site is now just $399.99, down $100 from its previous price. You can pick up the larger 32GB model for $449.99. The on-contract versions remain $99.99 on the Moto Maker site, though you can probably find the more drab black or white alternatives for less.

One of the problems with the pricing structure of American carriers is that people who buy their phones outright don't get any kind of break on the service plans themselves, giving people fewer incentives to get away from subsidies. T-Mobile has addressed this (by essentially throwing out subsidies all together), but today AT&T fires back with the new Mobile Share Value Plan. Basically it's a $15 discount if you buy a phone unsubsidized, including the new AT&T Next plans, or if you've already paid off your on-contract device.

So it looks like quite a lot of you were waiting on the Developer Editions for those new Motorola phones. Just over one day after Motorola posted the Developer Editions of the Moto X and the DROID MAXX on the company's official store, all three phones are unavailable. The Verizon Moto X Developer Edition is marked as "Out of Stock," while the GSM Moto X DE and the DROID MAXX DE are marked as "Coming Soon."

Motorola seems to have vastly underestimated the demand for these phones and their unlockable bootloaders, even at the hefty unsubsidized price of $649.99 for all three models.

Ever since Republic Wireless started its unconventional carrier experiment, there's been one common cry of lament among those who want to use it: "where are the good phones?" Republic's hybrid 3G-WiFi system requires some customized hardware, which means that new phones are few and far between for the unlimited, cheap-as-dirt Sprint MVNO. If you wanted an excuse to try out the service, here you go: a screenshot taken by Reddit user imaliamatoo indicates that the Moto X is coming to Republic.

We first saw the Sony Xperia ZL back in January, and although its brother, the Xperia Z, has been available in Europe for a while now, it's taken a little bit longer for the ZL to reach American shores.

The good news is that you can now pre-order the Xperia ZL directly from Sony's website. The bad news is that it will put you back $759.99 or $719.99, depending on the model that you choose (HSPA+ or LTE).

UPDATE: Per our informer below in the comments, this may be limited to only some Verizon retail locations. But, there is confirmation that several actual Verizon locations would not sell unsubsidized devices in the link we’re sourcing.

Numerous persons are confirming in comments and side-notes on DroidLife that some Verizon stores are refusing to sell unsubsidized (full-price) Droid X’s to customers who are showing up and waiting in line for the device this morning.
