It's no secret that we're big fans of tower defense games here at AP -- from Plants vs. Zombies to Fieldrunners HD, we're all about adding a new twist to a fun classic. Magic Defenders HD looks to do just that, with its deep storyline, amazing graphics, and downright awesome gameplay. Don't take my word for it, though, check this out:

Instead of setting up tons of cannons, railguns, or lasers to stop intruders from breaching your walls, you play the part of a lone sorcerer, capable of casting spells to destroy hoards of plundering orcs en masse.

You get to choose your hero for each of the three invasion episodes - the forest, the walls outside the town, and inside the town itself.

Yesterday, we announced Sentinel 3: Homeworld by Origin8 which hit the Android market as the third game in a very popular tower defense series, and the first installment to be available for Android. Normally I am not too excited about games of this genre, but I can honestly say that Sentinel 3 has impressed me both in terms of gameplay experience and sheer visual interest, thanks to the cleanly styled environments, visual effects, and smooth animation.

Sentinel 3 has three gameplay modes: campaign, endless, and classic. Each of them is a little different, and they each have their own merits. Before discussing these however we should talk about a few basics.

In a trip over from the iOS world, developer Origin8 Technologies brings us the most graphically intense, visually-stimulating tower defense game that we've ever seen. Before I even attempt to put into words the insanity that this game will bring into your life, take a look at the gameplay, complete with a super-sick dubstep soundtrack:

Speaking of dubstep -- anyone know the name of this track?

Update: We found the song (thanks, Denis!), but we still don't know what it's called. Download it here in high quality.

The game features 20 in-your-face levels, a commander unit which levels up and gains new abilities as you play, a massive array of weapons, including turrets, orbital ship weapons, and automated drones; customizable weapons, endless mode, OpenFeint leaderboards and achievements, and an exclusive soundtrack by Specimen A -- all accompanied by some of the sleekest graphics that we've ever laid eyes on.

Welcome to a new feature here on the site, where we'll be giving five awesome games that've been released in the past month the spotlight we feel they deserve. Below are our picks from July - enjoy!

Asteroid Tower Defense

There seems to be no shortage of tower defense games on Android, but most seem to have common problems: either they don't take advantage of the graphics that Android is capable of, or the gameplay isn't snappy enough to avoid frustration.

Asteroid Tower Defense thankfully avoids both issues. The game's controls allow you to make precise, quick movements without adding the game itself as an enemy to overcome, and the animations are fast, furious and beautiful.

Asteroid Tower Defense
Last Updated: July 24th, 2011

Ok, we've all seen enough post-apocalyptic movies to know what the deal is here. An obscene level of asteroids has suddenly decided to wreak havoc upon this wonderful planet of ours, and it is your job in Asteroid Tower Defense to set up a space defense capable of taking the bloody things out.

Tower Defense titles are certainly not new to the Android platform, with games such as Fieldrunners HD and Tower Raiders already in the market, and the concept is simple enough, but as you progress through the levels, things get considerably harder as the asteroids increase in size and speed.

Tower defense (TD) games seem to be plentiful on mobile platforms: their control scheme fits well with a touch surface, they don't require much user input from the player, and don't tend to be graphically intensive. If you're an Android user, you've probably at least tried a TD game before; GRave Defense HD looks to be the one that conquers them all.

No, that was not a typo in the title: GRave Defense is really spelled like that. I'm not sure why, to be honest, as there are no drug-addled teenagers waving glowsticks around, nor does pulsing techno music drive the soundtrack.

One of my most favorite Android games and by far the best tower defense game I've tried is Tower Raiders. Once you try Tower Raiders, you simply can't go back to Robo Defense and other clones (I honestly don't understand why Robo Defense is so popular). Last year, I was traveling to France, and Tower Raiders proved to be hours of incredible fun, making 2-hour lines to museums and long metro rides more than bearable.

I haven't heard from the developer of Tower Raiders, Gianormous Games, for many months, and started to get worried that we'd never see an update.
