Last month, owners of Toshiba's 10-inch Thrive tablet were dealt a blow when the manufacturer announced that the tablet's official update to Ice Cream Sandwich would be delayed to "early Fall." This news came several months after Toshiba had initially indicated an "end of Spring" release target for the update.

After all of that, it appears that the Thrive is finally receiving its update to Android 4.0.4 Ice Cream Sandwich today – for real this time. The update, which users report taking around 30 minutes to download, is rolling out automatically now.

In a post to Toshiba's Thrive forums earlier, a rep announced the update, indicating that it includes improved video and audio performance, improved camera functions, and improved signal strength/connectivity.

So you want a decent Android tablet (not one of those cheap knock-offs), but you don't want to break the bank, and an affordable seven-incher isn't quite what you had in mind. How about a 10.1-inch Toshiba Thrive for $250? Sure, it's not a Tegra 3-packing Transformer Prime, but at less than half the price of the TFP, it's still hard to beat. In fact, this is one of the best prices that we've ever seen on a premium Tegra 2 tablet.

This is a refurbished model.

Since it has been a while since we've talked about the Thrive, here's a reminder of what's under its hood:

  • 10.1-inch 1280x800 IPS display
  • 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 16GB internal storage
  • 5MP rear shooter, 2MP front camera
  • Weight: 1.7lbs
  • Thickness: 15mm
  • 5MP rear camera, 2MP front
  • Full-size USB and HDMI-out ports, plus miniUSB port
  • SD card slot (with SDXC support)
  • Android 3.1 (Android 4.0 upgradeable)

So there you go.

Remember the big ol' port-tastic Toshiba Thrive 10.1 and its seven-inch baby brother? Well, Toshiba has been running around telling folks on one of those social sites that it will be bringing ICS to this pair of Android tablet "at the end of spring."

Yes, spring.

When we hear end of spring, we automatically think sometime around mid-to-end of June, which is, well, quite a ways off. Of course, this isn't an 'official' statement per se, but considering the word came directly from Toshiba's PR Manager, it does carry some weight.

How does that feel, Thrive owners? Are you willing to wait four more months to get 4.0 on your beloved tablet?

Thrive owners, grab your slate and start checking for updates -- Android 3.2 is now available. The bump in Android version is the nuts-and-bolts of this update, along with improved screen rotation speed.

The changelog also notes that the YouTube and Android Market widgets may disappear after installing the update due to "a change in the application naming convention," but they can simply be added back.

So, hit the update app, cross your fingers, and hope it all works out better for the Thrive than it did the Galaxy Tab 10.1

So, yesterday's Thrive deal didn't get the price low enough for you? No worries, Groupon has a deal going where you can grab the 16GB version of the Thrive for $299 + $10 shipping for the next two days.

Update 11/15/11: The 16GB Toshiba Thrive is now $299 + free shipping, this time at Newegg.

Like most other 10-inch Android tablets, the Thrive is packing a 1GHz dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, 1GB RAM, and Android Honeycomb. It also sports a full size USB port, miniUSB, and HDMI ports, as well as and SD Card reader and user replaceable battery.

With quad-core devices on the horizon, the current crop of Honeycomb-powered tablets may seem like old hat -- unless you can score one for a reasonable price, that is. Thus is the case for the Toshiba Thrive, which landed itself a place on eBay's Daily Deals site today. For a modest $330 you can grab the Thrive and its ports-o-plenty, along with 16GB of storage, a 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 1GB of RAM, and Android 3.1.

This is by far the best price that we've seen on the Thrive -- no less than $75 cheaper than the previously posted deal.

Toshiba announced Tuesday their upcoming Thrive 7, a smaller variant of the original Thrive tablet. Carl Pinto, Vice President of product development has dubbed it "a seven inch tablet done right," touting an HD display, an "incredibly portable" design, and a weight coming in under a pound.

The Thrive 7 includes all the ports users have come to expect, including Mini USB, Micro HDMI, and a Micro SD card slot. The new Thrive also carries many of the same specs as its big brother, including:

  • 1280x800 AutoBrite multi-touch display
  • Toshiba's Adaptive Display and Resolution+ video enhancement
  • Stereo speakers
  • Nvidia Tegra 2 processor at 1GHz
  • 5MP rear shooter and 2MP front shooter
  • 16GB or 32GB internal memory, expandable with microSD card slot

The Thrive 7 still sounds a bit hefty, however, measuring .47" thick, but it also features Toshiba's Easy Grip finish, making it easy to keep a hold of.

We've highlighted a few deals of the Toshiba Thrive before, but Amazon just slashed the price of all three versions - 8GB, 16GB, and 32GB - to the lowest yet.

2011-08-15 16h44_01

Regardless of which variant you've been looking at, Amazon is definitely the way to go if you plan on buying any time soon -- the 8GB version is going for $370, 16GB's for $430, and the 32GB variant will set you back $500. Aside from the differences in storage, all three versions share the same innards:

  • 10.1-inch IPS LCD display
  • 1GHz NVIDIA Tegra 2 (AP20H) dual-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • Weight: 1.7lbs
  • Thickness: 15mm
  • 5MP rear camera, 2MP front
  • Full-size USB and HDMI-out ports, plus miniUSB port
  • SD card slot (with SDXC support)
  • Android 3.1 Honeycomb (via OTA update)

So, if the Toshiba Thrive and its gaggle of ports is the tablet for you, head over to Amazon and pick your poison.

A few days ago we told you about a deal where you could get the Toshiba Thrive 8GB for $380, but if 8GB just isn't enough storage for you, then you should head over to Digital Etc. where you can get the Thrive 16GB for $405 after using coupon code THRIVE405.

Considering this is a dealer that we've never heard of before, we did a bit of research to make sure everything is kosher. According to Reseller Ratings, Digital Distributors has a pretty good rating, so we trust that it's a legit company and feel comfortable recommending this deal.

If you've been craving an Android tablet with ports-o-plenty, then the Toshiba Thrive is definitely the way to go. Rocking full USB and HDMI ports, as well as a miniUSB port and SD card slot, this dual-core Android 3.1 tablet can handle all of the peripherals that you can possibly throw at it, and for today only, you can grab the 8GB version for $380 from eBay Daily Deals.

2011-08-01 11h40_04

On top of the full array of ports, you'll also get the hardware specs of other high-end Honeycomb tablets:

  • 10.1-inch IPS LCD display
  • NVIDIA Tegra 2 (AP20H) dual-core processor
  • 1GB RAM
  • 8 GB internal storage
  • Weight: 1.7lbs
  • Thickness: 15mm
  • 5MP rear camera, 2MP front
  • Full-size USB and HDMI-out ports, plus miniUSB port
  • SD card slot (with SDXC support)
  • Android 3.1 Honeycomb (via OTA update)

Of course, all those ports come at a price, as this by far the thickest and heaviest Android tablet on the market.
