ASUS Announces Class Action Settlement, Transformer Prime (TF201) Customers Can Get $17 And A GPS Dongle

The Transformer Prime (or TF201 if you're nasty) had its share of GPS problems when it first came out. So much so that the company began sending out dongles to fix the issue. Well, that didn't prevent a class action lawsuit from being filed and, as a result, ASUS has settled the case. What does that mean for you? Well, if you purchased a TF201 between December 1, 2011 and February 19, 2013 and you didn't get a refund, then you qualify to receive $17 and a free GPS dongle.

If you want to get in on this class action, you need to submit a claim by May 31st.

ASUS Transformer Prime TF201 Receiving Update 10.4.2.17 - Here's The Full Changelog

ASUS hasn't forgotten Transformer Prime owners - after rolling out Jelly Bean back in September, the company is pushing a small bug fixer over the air with version 10.4.2.17. The update actually began yesterday, but we waited a bit for the official changelog to come through - after all, what's the point of playing the guessing game if we can't add anything of value, right?

As I mentioned, the changes are pretty specific and far from critical, but it's better to see them and know what ASUS didn't do than run all over TF201's dark corners looking for something that isn't there.

ASUS Transformer Prime TF201 Jelly Bean OTA Update Rolling Out Now

Wait no more, Transformer Prime owners - the Jelly Bean update 10.4.2.15 (Android 4.1.1) has just started rolling out! We've confirmed multiple sightings of the OTA popup in the States as well as Spain. Canada is on tonight's list too, and we'd like to get as many confirmations in other countries as possible, so post your country and whether you're seeing the JB update in the comments.

Here's what you should expect:

  • Upgrade OS from Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) to Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean)
  • Default enable System Bar Lock
  • Add Multiple Photo Selection feature
  • Support Connect Dock (Accessory)
  • Remove Adobe Flash support
  • Remove Wi-Fi Direct function support
  • Remove Press Reader

So, TF300 and TF201 are done, TF700 to follow tomorrow.

[Update: Within 72 Hours] ASUS: 'We Will Soon Be Rolling Out The Android 4.1 Update For The Transformer Pad Infinity And Prime'

When ASUS announced the Jelly Bean update for the Transformer Prime in Sweden yesterday, there were two questions that immediately popped up: what about the rest of the world? and when will the Infinity get updated?

We now have answers to both, even if in the simplest of terms: soon.

Update: ASUS rep Gary Key took to the XDA forums to give users a better timeline of when the updates should begin rolling out. According to his post, the OTAs should start hitting within 72 hours. Nice.

ASUS posted today on its Facebook page that the JB update would be coming to the Prime and Infinity and for users to "watch this space." There's no exact word when the updates will begin rolling out, but the last time they publicly teased an OTA, it started rolling out a mere 12 hours later.

With the flagship Transformer Pad Infinity (TF700) release right around the corner and the release of the budget-oriented Transformer Pad (TF300) a few months ago, Asus has filled out it's line-up of 10" quad-core Android tablets. Last week, I threw the Acer A510 and the ASUS TF300 in the ring together for a head-to-head battle. After claiming the A510 as the victor, several readers wanted to know how it compares to the Transformer Prime (referred to as the TF201 from here on out). The ASUS Transformer Prime is the hottest Android tablet on store shelves right now, and for good reason; it's thin, fast, powerful, and well-featured. But there's one shortcoming that ruffled a lot of feathers: very poor GPS performance. The company acknowledged the issue and rolled out numerous OTA updates to the device in hopes that a software patch would fix the issue, but to no avail.

Last week, the CyanogenMod team launched the first CM9 nightly builds for the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola XOOM. As of today, the following devices also have CM9 nightly builds available:

  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Wi-Fi and I/O Edition (download: p4wifi) - yay for the latter, as it seems Samsung completely abandoned it - I believe mine is still running 3.1 with no updates in sight.
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 SGH-T859 on T-Mobile (download: p4tmo)
  • Samsung Galaxy S II (download: galaxys2) - I wouldn't try this on carrier-specific U.S. variants if I were you, wait for those to surface separately.

ASUS Extends Full Refund Or Warranty Extension To Unhappy Transformer Prime Owners Who Reside In The UK

If you happen to own a Transformer Prime TF201, you may be a little disappointed by the issues it had right off the bat. The most notable defect with the TF201 is its inability to properly use the GPS module that was originally advertised as a feature. Due to bad placement and the material the tablet is made out of, ASUS was forced to entirely remove GPS as a feature.

Aside from that major issue, the Prime is still a very solid tablet. However, if the other bug fixes and the ICS update didn't make you much happier, you'll be pleased to know that ASUS is stepping up to the plate and offering refunds or warranty extensions to TF201 owners.
