AT&T Putting The Smack Down On Unauthorized Tethering

AT&T users who have been tethering their phones' data plans under the radar (either using MyWi on a jailbroken iPhone, or one of many apps like Wireless Tether for Root Users on a rooted Android phone) have been receiving a little nudge from AT&T asking them to sign up for a tethering plan - or face possibly getting signed up for it without consent.

In a lengthy email, AT&T writes "Tethering can be an efficient way for our customers to enjoy the benefits of AT&T’s mobile broadband network and use more than one device to stay in touch with important people and information.

[Breaking] T-Mobile G2 OTA Update Shows Up, Brings Native Tethering And WiFi Calling

I was about to go to sleep, but, of course, when I heard of a possible G2 OTA report, and one that brings such important new features as WiFi calling, otherwise known as UMA, and native tethering, I had to stay up just a bit longer.

Update: T-Mobile's implementation is not exactly UMA - it doesn't transfer your calls between WiFi and T-Mo towers.

Here is what we know so far:

  • an OTA is indeed real and has been rolled out to some users
  • it's likely that T-Mobile is doing a very limited test, at least for now and at least until someone discovers a direct link to the OTA download
  • speaking of the direct link, it hasn't been found yet, but if you see it posted around, please drop a line in the comments
  • post-OTA pictures showing both native tethering and WiFi calling, as promised, can be found below, thanks to Stryf3
  • if you want to keep your soft root, the folks at the #g2root freenode IRC channel are warning against installing the OTA just yet
  • the update process itself may or may not shine some light and help figure out a permaroot process, but I have my doubts

Android WiFi Tether App For Rooted Users Constantly Disconnecting? Try These Solutions To Fix It

The number 1 Android app for rooted phones out there is undoubtedly Android WiFi Tether, which is a free alternative to all those carrier-bundled WiFi hotspot apps. In fact, it is the primary reason I root every Android phone I own - 2 hours of commute on the train suddenly become extremely productive because of always-on laptop connectivity. I've excitedly written about the app before, especially after it added support for Infrastructure mode and WPA2 on the EVO 4G.

Problems

However, after a few months of using the WiFi Tether app, I started experiencing occasional issues maintaining connectivity. The symptoms were:

  • the WiFi AP (access point) would suddenly disappear from the list completely
  • the connection would drop unexpectedly
  • the AP would show up in the list but connectivity with it could not be established

Doesn't sound like fun, does it?

Free Android WiFi Tether For Root Users App Now Supports WPA2 And Full Hotspot (Infrastructure) Capabilities On EVO 4G

Only 5 days ago the brilliant team behind the android-wifi-tether project, which provides free WiFi hotspot capabilities to rooted phones, added support for EVO 4G. This meant users of this recently released beast could now turn their phones into WiFi routers, broadcasting WiFi signal to devices nearby, thus removing the need for a similar application Sprint charges $30/month for.

Well, there were a couple of limitations:

  • The android-wifi-tether hotspot ran in ad-hoc mode, which meant devices that didn't support ad-hoc mode couldn't use or even see it. This included other Android phones, some game consoles (like the Wii), and other devices.

EVO 4G users, rejoice! As of a few minutes ago, you can enjoy unlimited free WiFi/Bluetooth tethering using the Wireless Tether for Root users (or simply android-wifi-tether) app.

The app's main committer Harald Mue, who doesn't even have the EVO in his possession, together with a community contributor Andrew Robinson (who does have one) have figured out what was going wrong with the EVO compared to other phones and together collaborated on a fix all within 2 days of finding the problem

Hey, wait a minute, wasn't the EVO released the same 2 days ago? Community dedication never ceases to amaze me.

Yesterday we brought you exclusive benchmarks showing the amazing speedups achieved by the Android team in Froyo 2.2, and today we're back with some more juicy info.

Today, TechCrunch finally broke the news of the USB Tether and WiFi Access point/mobile hotspot capabilities, built right into the core of Android 2.2 Froyo.

TechCrunch posted 2 pictures, which some claimed could be fake, and provided no further information.

I am here to tell you they are not fake, and to provide more exclusive pictures obtained by AndroidPolice.com.

I can also confirm that testing the WiFi AP/mobile hotspot feature was successful, with a couple of WiFi enabled devices hooked up to the said access point running on Froyo and all able to access the Internet just fine.
