Huawei announces a phone that can take your temperature

Call this a 'fever pitch' for an Honor product

The Honor Play 4 and Play 4 Pro are your typical high-octane Huawei smartphones at greatly reduced prices that won't be sold far beyond China. Both phones have 5G, the Play 4 has four rear cameras and vapor cooling while the Play 4 Pro has two in-display selfie cameras and 40W charging. But the newest attraction we can pick out here is that there's a special version of the Play 4 Pro that has an IR temperature sensor.

Changes to the UI of Android Auto are few and far between, but that doesn't mean there aren't a few things in testing from time to time. There are (at least) two interfaces in the works right now, one of which appears to be rolling out to some people, and we have screenshots of both. Also, for those waiting for the ability to customize the apps in your launcher or get the temperature in your status bar, both appear to be live for everybody now.

Insignia makes a couple of popular alarm clock-style smart speakers featuring the Google Assistant. Previously, when asked about the weather, the speakers would display the current temperature under the clock face. Now, though, they've been updated to display that information all the time.

The love story between Google and bugs is one that will seemingly never end. Case in point: the company has just solved a problem first reported 13 months ago on its Google Product Forums concerning the incorrect temperature scale being shown on Android Auto head units.

Weather apps. If one app category gets its own entire section in the Play Store, you should surmise that the choices are beyond wide and the selection is almost impossible. Even browsing the category is a daunting minefield of Froyo-stuck designs and mediocre data and options. So why bother with a third-party weather client, especially when Google Now has its own weather card, Android comes with a News & Weather app, and a simple Google search for the name of your city with the word weather turns up the result you're looking for?

The Thermodo was successfully funded on Kickstarter last Spring to the tune of $336,018. The designers were only seeking $35,000 to build the tiny electrical thermometer, but apparently people really want to know what the temperature is in the general vicinity of their headphone jack. The device has reached most backers and now the promised Android app has hit the Play Store.

Yesterday, The Information reported that Google is rumored to be working on smart thermostats, in a renewed bid to help users manage their home energy (and interior climate). Information on the project is sparse so far, but Google hopes it will be a successful follow-up to the unsuccessful PowerMeter, a service that was killed off due to apparent scaling difficulties.

Now here's a novel idea! Putting weather information on the television! Weather Underground is now available for the Google TV, bringing a rather nice, simple weather app to the Google TV. The app features a 6-day forecast, hourly forecasts, and maps of your local area with weather information overlaid. It's pretty nifty.

Ready for a mind-blowing example of what Android is capable of? You'd better be - Sensorcon, hoping for funding from Kickstarter, has thrown together a demonstration of Sensordrone, an accessory for your Android device that will be small enough to fit on your keychain and yet powerful enough to pack 13 different sensors under its hood, paving the road for hundreds of potential new apps.
