Sick of Zoom video calls? You'll soon be sick of Telegram video calls, too

A full suite of video conferencing features are on the way

Telegram is on a roll this month. After announcing not one, but two new web apps and significant updates to its mobile offerings, the company has now set its sights on Zoom, Slack, and co. Telegram CEO Pavel Durov has just announced that the company wants to add a "video dimension" to its voice chats in May, making it a powerful video-conferencing platform.

Using an app billed as "experimental" comes with its fair share of risks, including the chance that the developers may just give up on the project altogether. It seemed like Telegram X, the company's alternate client for testing out new features, was headed towards a quiet death following its last update in May, but the app has finally shown a new spark of life. After nearly a year of silence, a new beta version for Telegram X is finally available for download, including several bug fixes and some key features to help modernize the app.

Clubhouse is the new hotness right now, but the devs only started working on an app for Android in January, and there's no word yet on when that might drop. If you're looking for something to fill the void, Telegram's new update builds on the voice calls introduced at the end of last year, adding audio recording, virtual hand raising, and unlimited listeners.

Telegram announces plan to earn revenue via premium features and ads

Co-founder Paul Durov promises the company will remain independent

Over the years, Telegram has proven to be a popular alternative to WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. It's now on the verge of reaching 500 million active users, and as it approaches this milestone, co-founder Pavel Durov has announced plans to start earning revenue in 2021 through premium features and an ad platform.

As the year draws to a close, Telegram is pushing out a new update that adds to what is already one of the most feature-rich messaging apps. The most interesting addition is Voice Chats, which allows users in a group chat to participate in an always-on conference call, coming and going as they please.

Here on this quiet Sunday, Telegram decided to push out a new update, bringing the app to version 5.8. While the last couple of releases have focused on privacy, this one is centered around communicating with people nearby and adding contacts without having their phone numbers.

Telegram received a new update today, bumping the version number to 4.8.10. This one is fairly substantial, adding several new things like replaceable media, text hyperlinks in chat, and so on. Without further ado, let's take a look at the changelog.

Telegram continues, as usual, to get better and better. The latest version, 4.5, adds a few new, interesting features. From grouping multiple photos into albums to an improved search implementation, Telegram 4.5 is a relatively large update.

If you're a Telegram user (hi), then you'll understand how cool this latest news is. The privacy-focused messaging service is finally getting custom theme support on Android, which is just fantastic. You have three basic ones to start, and one of those is a dark theme.
