We haven't heard much about Acer's tasty-looking ICS tablet since CES, but today the company made the quad-core Iconia Tab A700 available to pre-order in the US and in Canada.

Lest you forget, the tablet's specs are quite impressive (if a bit more run of the mill now than they were in January) - here's a rundown:

  • 1920 x 1200 "HD" display (that's a 16:10 aspect ratio, though Acer apparently has the gall to market it as a 1080p screen, which would really be 16:9)
  • 10.5 hour battery life
  • Dolby Mobile 3 and 5.1 Channel Dolby Surround Sound via HDMI
  • microSD card slot and microUSB 2.0 ports
  • 1.3GHz NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core CPU (with the now-famous "4-Plus-1" design)
  • 12-core GeForce NVIDIA GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • Android 4.0 with Acer's "Ring" interface
  • GPS
  • WiFi 802.11 b/g/n
  • 32GB of flash storage
  • 9.8mm thickness
  • 5MP rear-facing and auto-focusing camera
  • 1MP front-facing camera
  • Black and silver colors

Both national retailers and Acer's own online store now have the tablet on pre-sale for a reasonable $449.99.

The name Kai seemingly popped out of nowhere during NVIDIA's meeting of stockholders last month. Since then, we've heard it many times - but I still don't think it's getting the attention it deserves. Its importance, and what it means for the future of Android tablets, is being greatly understated across the board. I believe that Kai is going to be revolutionary for Android tablets - here's why.

The Budget Powerhouse Is Upon Us

We don't often use the words budget and powerhouse together in the same sentence.

Acer surprised viewers today with a pair of tablets that were not ushered in even by a humble press release. Engadget reports that the tablets received no formal announcement at Computex either, but that they were only discovered thanks to a wandering eye.

At any rate, the tablets in question are the Iconia Tab A210 and A110 – presumably upgraded versions of the A200 and A100. Each of the tablets has a new design, a Tegra 3 processor, and Ice Cream Sandwich goodness on board.

NVIDIA has been working hard to bring a console-like gaming experience to portable device that feature the Tegra 3 superchip. Shadowgun was the first title to really break that barrier, and the experience has only gotten better since then. Games like Dark Meadow and Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode II now set the standard - and that's a high bar to reach in the mobile space.

Today, though, NVIDIA has taken the wraps off of five all-new Tegra Zone games designed specifically for the 4-plus-1 core Tegra 3 processor: Dead Trigger, Puddle THD, Demons' Score THD, Bounty Arms, and Heroes Call.

By now, you've probably heard about NVIDIA's Kai platform. However, it hasn't been entirely clear what Kai actually is. Is it a tablet? Or a specific chipset? If so, can it be used in other devices? NVIDIA recently posted on its blog more details about Kai that answers those very questions, as well as touches on the possibilities of where Kai can be used.

First off, Kai is neither a specific piece of hardware, nor is it a software configuration.

If you own a Tegra 3 device, then there's a good chance that games had at least something to do with your purchase decision. For good reason, too: the Tegra 3 is one of the most powerful mobile processors on the planet, and its 12-core GPU can push out some of the best gaming content that we've ever seen on a mobile device.

As a result, we're all looking for console-like quality from our tablets - and we already have a few titles, such as Shadowgun and Dark Meadow, that fit the bill.

There's no denying that the Tegra 3-powered HTC One X is one of the hottest phones on the market right now, and NVIDIA general manager Mike Rayfield told analysts this afternoon to look for twenty-nine more to be available before the end of the year. We know that LG's Optimus 4x HD will be one of those, but past that, the sky's the limit. We do know, however that about half of the bunch are slated to be sub-$300 (off-contract) devices that will hit the budget crowd; yeah, we're talking about quad-core budget phones.

Until the Galaxy S III comes out, the One X is the phone that's stealing all the spotlights. eBay Daily Deals is offering an unlocked One X for $557, the lowest price we've seen yet. This device is a GSM quadband model that supports AT&T 3G stateside (no LTE, though). Once again, no T-Mobile 3G.

The device is available just for today and is only available in black. Keep in mind, since this is the international version, the device is packing the quad-core Tegra 3 that overseas readers are accustomed to, not the dual-core, but still impressive S4 Krait processor AT&T's One X (known as the One XL overseas) is carrying.
